Today is the anniversary of the birth of my dear mother of blessed memory. Appropriately enough, one of her favorite rock songs pops up on the list of favorites of mine from 1985. I’m so thankful I inherited rhythm from my dad, because Mom had no rhythm to speak of! Anyway, here’s today’s song (that frequently proved she had no rhythm). #4: Walk of Life - Dire Straits Since it’s the anniversary of Mom’s birthday (she would be 93 today), I’m going to re-tell this story. She was displaying her lack of rhythm at a concert we went to together, always on the “off-beat.” I leaned over to her and said, “Mother, you’re so white.” YEARS later, she called me one night, in tears from laughing, telling me that she was watching the Steve Martin film The Jerk and was at that point where Martin’s character was showing off his lack of rhythm. She finally got the gist of what I’d said to her. No, she couldn’t even clap on the beat with this song! But oh, how she loved this song. Now, before you think of some lady in her mid-50s listening to the FM rock station, NO. She heard most of the rock songs that she had a deep affection for from me. (A notable exception was Rod Stewart’s “Rhythm of My Heart,” which she heard played on a soap opera!) Oh, yes, I miss her. Every day. Songs like this remind me of the great times I had with my great mother, who was also a great friend. @MarieCoyle — in my eulogy I talked about how proud she was of her kids both joining the Navy and getting college degrees, but the thing she was most proud of was our faith in God.

Good story. I have payed with a few "musicians" who had what I call "white man's disease." I miss my folks too.

Always remember, friends don’t let friends clap on one and three.

@FourWalls I remember. But sometimes I feel helpless. Did you see Mr. Holland's Opus? Or something like that?

I remember you posting a Dire Straits track before, was it this one? Mark Knopfler is a fantastic guitarist and I have this album. One of my all-time favourites. Mothers are special, and I miss mine too, so I know how you feel.

Yes, it was probably this one. I used “So Far Away” in the COVID quarantine countdown. Love Knopfler. “Lady Writer” is another one that gets a lot of airplay from me. Those Mom-shaped holes in our lives are the toughest ones.

Those memories of loved ones are precious. I'm sure your mom is at peace now away from her record playing daughter (just kidding). Of course, I am sorry for your loss. I applaud your mom's excellent taste on this tune. Walk of Life is a great song! An "oldie goldie for sure.
