A beef and Guinness pie

I mentioned in a comment that our friend brought a beef and Guinness pie for us to eat and someone asked what it was. Pies are something I take very much for granted so I wasn’t sure what I needed to explain. Maybe it’s like an American pot pie. The one in the photo is the one we ate and it would serve four quite easily. The filling is mostly beef pieces in a rich, Guinness-flavoured gravy. You can also make or buy smaller individual pies which are popular as lunches for workers. Fillings can vary enormously with a variety of savoury or sweet fillings. The fillings are encased in a pastry case. The pastry can be of several types too. We enjoyed this one and had the leftovers for our lunch.

I haven't heard that expression. I've heard 'cookin' with gas'.

The Guinness is just used to add flavour. It was delicious.

Yes, it sounds similar to our beef pot pies without the Guinness! Now we have something new to try if we want to throw in a Guinness.

That's thick pastry. I'm not a drinker but my hubby would love the Guiness. I've made tons of pot pies.

Your savory pie seems very good. It is a well made crust. I am not sure I would want Guinness flavored gravy, though.

You can't taste the Guinness but maybe it helped add a bit of flavour.

Mince pies are good too. Was the mince fruit mince or was it minced meat?

Kind of like a pot pie where you can make a crust and put anything you want in it.

Fair enough but you couldn't really taste the Guinness. Vince doesn't like Guinness despite trying to get a taste for it. He stuck to Harp which is a light ale I think.

@JudyEv I like a good bitter, like Directors or Tim Taylors. There is also a nice ale called Neckoil
