Biting off more than you can chew

Ants can be fascinating creatures. We saw this ant and millipede on the path today. The ant had hold of the millipede and was walking backwards dragging the millipede with it. After a while the ant came to a bit of an obstacle and couldn’t get the millipede over it. In the end he had to go off without it. A couple more ants came along but ignored the millipede. Then we got bored and toddled off too! Do you ever watch ants?

I don't normally watch ants unless I find them in the house and then I'm just following them to find out where they cam in from and why they came in. Then I dust them and their trail with Diatomaceous earth to get rid of them.

Ants are known to be very strong and dedicated - even though they are a nuisance.

Mum always followed their trail back to their nest and then demolished that. I'm not sure what she used.

You need to watch for a while I guess but they communicate with this one and that as they go about their business. Maybe we just don't have enough to do!

I am fascinated by ants. Last summer I had put outside those blue granules to kill the lugs. I noticed in the morning that they were all aligned, I checked and the ants were moving them. I took a video.

@LadyDuck I wonder why the ants lined up the granules. I guess we'll never know.

My mother put some granules down an ant-nest then watched as they very carefully carried them all out again. That's so interesting about them aligning the granules. I'm glad you took a video. Some people wouldn't believe it.

On occasion I have found myself watching ants work...that is if they are outside. If they are inside, that is a different story and I will do what I need to do to rid them from the house....seems like every spring I am fighting to keep them from coming in the house.

I don't like them in the house. It's instant war in that case.

They make very distinct trails. Thousands must walk over and over the ground to make those trails so distinct.

Ants make their presence felt for me with their bites. Some can be quite nasty.

They are so small but they carve out trails over time. Did you ever get the program Miniscule there? I guess it's a cartoon but the ants all marched in a line with a 'sergeant' out the front blowing his whistle to keep them in time. The segments were short - about ten minutes and featured different insects. The dragonflies all sounded like jet fighters.

I HATE ANTS. They come in the house every spring and crawl on me. They don't seem to be as bad this year; but we put everything in the fridge and containers so they probably can't find any food and move on.

If you can keep the food away from them, that would help.

@JudyEv Yes, we had to secure all the food because of the mice.

Seldom have ants in my apartment. But white ants can be damaging. They can.cause major structural damage to wood relatively quickly.

White ants can be really bad here and buildings have to be treated to stop their getting established. Officials check houses for sale for white ants.
