Same Tornado Shelter, Different Day

Yes, that’s a different photo! Back in the safe place this evening.
We had tornado warnings in Louisville. One of the local stations said insulation is on the interstate in the eastern part of the county, and one report said that the Papa John’s Pizza Headquarters was damaged by…something.
We were blessed here. I’ve been watching our news all night, so I just discovered that a town near Jonesboro, Arkansas suffered significant damage by a tornado.
It’s early in the morning of April 3 here, meaning this is the 51st anniversary of the Super Outbreak. So many people had no clue those storms were coming, and as a result, hundreds died. This outbreak, in contrast, has been noted for a week. We’ve had plenty of time to prepare in order to minimize loss of life.
Now they’re talking about a foot of rain. Good thing we have a replica of Noah’s Ark in northern Kentucky!
Photo is a selfie of me in the safe area tonight.

Where is this safe area? In your house? Hope that the tornado passes quickly without causing much damage. Take care. Stay safe.

Yes, it’s in the middle of my house. It looks like the damage was confined to a primarily industrial area in the eastern part of the county near the big church in town. Best news: no injuries reported here.

@arunima25 — mobile/manufactured homes are not safe because they can easily be blown over by the wind (while site-built homes are just that, built on the site and therefore solidly grounded). Other than that, it’s a case of how strong the tornado is. There were EF-5 tornadoes that literally wiped foundations clean of the house that was on them. In that case, there’s nothing you can do. Thankfully, EF-5 tornadoes are very rare. There hasn’t been one in the US since the Joplin tornado in 2011.

@FourWalls Oh! That is a relief that you have a safe place in your home only. Is there some specific construction features to make it safe?
Happy to hear that no injuries or loss of lives reported. Property damages can be recovered but not the lost lives.

We had flood warnings and watches in my area the last time I looked at a forecast. It's supposed to be raining here for the next several days.
I hope everything goes well in your area. Good luck!

If my car was working, I'd drive over and we'd have lunch.
Thanks... Everything is fine here.

I’m out today. The rain hasn’t started the deluge yet. I didn’t see any damage, but I’m not going over to where the damage was reported to be a “lookie lou” and get in people’s way.

There was a mii tornado that we experienced in the year 2015 - it came without notice.

@FourWalls The tornado that we experienced did leave behind quite a bit of devastation.

Some tornadoes are so small that they can’t be seen by radar.

Glad you are safe. I went to bed so don't know what happened except lots of rain. Puddles in the yard tell me that

@FourWalls I know they lowered the wind expectations. But even that I wouldn't be able to do anything about.

We survived the storms as well last night. I heard there were tornados in the area but haven't seen any confirmations if so. It was still dark when I came into work, so it was hard to see all of the damage from if anything the high winds. Not looking forward to all the rain we are suppose to be getting, though I live on a hill, and don't have to worry too much about flooding.
We went on our honeymoon to the Ark in October of '21.

@FourWalls I've since heard confirmation that a tornado touched down about 6 miles from where I live. It took out an abandon trailer and a roof off of a church. We didn't lose power but know many that did.
I lived in New Albany for 20+ years and now live on the property that I grew up about 25 miles northwest.

John Belski called in to WAVE last night and said his house in New Albany shook when the winds were at their apex.
My brother also lives in New Albany and he doesn’t have power. No damage in the south end where I live, but it seems the area near Southeast Christian Church was hit.

That is so scary. We have the occasional very small tornado nearby. They must be very scary to be near and involved in. I can't even imagine.

We were blessed. No injuries here, and minimal damage areas. If you see Selmer, Tennessee, though, you can see how horrible they can be.

We had an inch with the storms that came through last night. At least it’s going to be spread out over a few days. In March 1997 got nearly a foot of rain in ONE DAY. Everything is fine right now.

Oh, yes. I have a site-built home, not a manufactured home, so it has a foundation. The expertise is to “put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.” This area is the center of my house, right next to a small closet.

I think it’s a matter of what you’re “used to.” I don’t LIKE the storms, but I’m “used” to living in an area prone to them. Similarly, there are people who are “used” to the hurricanes that hit the Gulf and east coasts every year. The one “good” thing about tornadoes is that they hit then they’re gone. Hurricanes can linger for hours or days.

I hope you're safe and sound. I just looked at the radar. That nasty batch of storms is huge. We've had torrential rains.

There were severe thunderstorm warnings in Ohio yesterday…and sn*w the day before. Yuck. Springtime.
