The Rascally Raccoon

In my last discussion I wrote about a snake that visited us during the night when my son and I were camping. We had another visitor as well, a raccoon. Although raccoons are very common in Florida, and seem to be in high numbers around campsites throughout the state, we often do wilderness/remote camping, and in all the years my son and I have done this type of camping, we've never run into any raccoons, until now.
Interestingly enough, this raccoon didn't show up until the second night of our camping trip, and it was an interesting little fellow. When it woke me up in the middle of the night, it wasn't because it was getting into our food supplies, it was because it was drinking coffee out of my mug I had left sitting out!
I chased it out of the camp and up a tree, and then I went back and cleaned up so as not to leave anything out that would attract it, or other creatures, back into our campsite. Yet 30 minutes later, it was back! But this time, I got up and caught it trying to carry off my canister of coffee grounds! So, apparently, this particular raccoon enjoyed coffee!
The next morning, I walked into the woods to the spot where I had chased the raccoon up the tree. I wanted to see if it was still around (I couldn't find him in the trees), but I did find its stash of food/drink items. In a pile on the ground was a wine bottle and chocolate candy wrappers (we didn't bring either). I laughed, because it appeared we had a raccoon with a hangover trying to sober up with some coffee! LOL
Fortunately, the rest of the trip we didn't have any issues with visiting raccoons. I guess he sobered up and moved on to somewhere else in the forest.
Have you ever had a run-in with a raccoon before? They are very smart little creatures, and can figure out and solve challenging ways to get access to people's food and/or garbage. They don't call them Trash Pandas for nothing!

Nope, never had that experience... Even when I camped out in our fields, raccoons stayed away. (Dad liked hunting them and probably had cleaned them out in that area.)
I know other places have a lot of trouble getting them to leave trash cans and such alone. Some raccoons even learn how to open locking trash cans.

@DaddyEvil Right! We are slaves to them. And we don't even know it.

Don’t think I’ve ever come across a raccoon. Interesting that he was stealing your coffee. I wouldn’t think they’d do that but I guess they will eat anything…

He didn’t only steal my coffee grounds, he was also drinking my coffee that I had left sitting out by the campfire.

I had a couple that got into a pumpkin thAt was on the porch one year.vThey are funny critters Oddly, I put two pumpkins out this year in the wooded section in front of the house. They weren't touched, which was peculiar. You would think the raccoon or deer would enjoy them. Funny raccoon story

When my son and I left on our camping trip, we brought some fried chicken with us, and set it in the woods about 500 yards down the trail from our campsite. The idea was that we wanted to attract some bears or coyotes to photograph while we were there. Not a single animal touched the chicken the entire week we were there, not even the raccoons.

@moffittjc I raised a pair one time. They get into everything. Think of a cross of ADHD kid with kitten.
I had to turn mine loose when they got big enough as you need a permit from a breeder to have them here. A friend of mine in school could have helped me but her dad had retired by that time and sold all his. That meant I couldn't go to the vet to get them fixed

A friend of mine just rescued two baby raccoons she found roaming the side of a busy road. She says they are so cute that she is going to keep them and raise them as pets.

No run ins, but the evidence of a visit for sure. I live the idea of a raccoon sobering up with your coffee. Lol

The funny thing was, he wasn’t drinking the coffee like a dog or cat would do (slopping it up with their tongue), but instead was holding it and drinking it like a human would. I thought that was the hilarious part.

Many, many years ago I had a raccoon try to steal a bag of marshmallows from us WHILE we were roasting marshmallows by the fire. I tried to grab the bag back from him and he stood up and tried to fight me!!!

They love to eat cat food apparently. And I forgot that they wash their hands afterward!

I've read a couple of books about them and they are incredibly clever. It might have become a battle of wits if you'd stayed there longer.

Yes, they are very smart creatures with little hands and a mask. I find them endearing.

They are actually neat little creatures, and very smart. They also believe in good hygiene, as they like to wash their hands after eating.
