Sunday Island and Hog Deer

I wrote about Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Islands so I went looking for islands named for the other days of the week. I thought Sunday Island was worth writing about. It lies on the coast of Victoria and is a barrier island, low-lying and sandy. It’s 8 kms long by 3 km wide and has a maximum height of 15 metres above mean sea level (halfway between high and low tide). What makes it interesting is that it is a private property, a game reserve owned by the Para Park Co-operative Game Reserve Limited. Most of the members belong to the Sporting Shooters Association and purchased the island for the conservation, study and sustainable hunting of hog deer. Hog deer (Axis porcinus) are native to the Indian subcontinent and Ind-Gangetic Plain. The name comes from their habit of running with their head held low and ducking under obstacles in the forest rather than leaping over them like most deer. Males are around 70cm high and weigh 55 kg but females are smaller and lighter. They are the smallest of Australia’s feral deer species. I don't know how this one got its name. It wasn't discovered by the same guy that named the other three islands.

@JudyEv Deer can be a nuisance. But still very pretty to watch. I have learned ways to keep them out of things.

I've always thought deer are cute but then we don't have them ruining crops in our area.

I was surprised to find it was privately owned. They have a waiting list if you want to become a member of the association.

Running with their head held low and ducking under things? Guess they don't want to draw attention to themselves. I wonder if they taste like ham...

They are the smallest of Australia's feral deer so I guess ducking and diving works best for them.

It's a shame they are only there for people to shoot at. They only allow a certain number to be culled each year so I guess that's something.

Wow! Very interesting! Thank you! So they're small enough to duck under most obstacles...

Your headline caught my attention because of those two words - Hog and Island. In my homeland Guyana there is an island named Hog Island - and l am now curious to research how it got that name. Interesting post.
