Happy 60th birthday to this, and many other great songs from 1965! There’s a definite 60s vibe to a lot of these songs, and yet in spite of that, they’re timeless! Here’s a good case of that.
It’s the Same Old Song - Four Tops
So do the songs sound the same nowadays? Ha, listen to this! Lamont Dozier and Four Tops member Duke Fakir were listening to the radio one day and complaining how everything was “the same old song.” So what did Dozier do? He went to his songwriting partners, brothers Eddie and Brian Holland, and took the melody to “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)”…and reworked it as this!
Like anyone cared. They’re both incredible tunes, staples for both the Four Tops and Holland-Dozier-Holland. We can’t help ourselves if we love the same old songs!
So dance and sing along.
It’s the Same Old Song

@Orson_Kart — one day I’m going to kidnap her and drive her to Cozumel (her favorite place), just so I can play her all these songs she’s been “noping.”

Give me a little Motown, anytime. It always brings a smile to my face and a tap to my foot, lol. I really like this Four Tops tune.
I also like "I Can't Help Myself" too. No wonder why those songs fit so well together!
These guys had some longevity...41 years together without a lineup change. Wow! Take that Rolling Stones!

That’s one of the things I love about R.E.M.: when Bill Berry left after that brain aneurysm he had, he told the band he’d rather try to “soldier on” for another couple of years rather than see them break up. As a result, they continued on…but never replaced Berry. They used the same drummers for tours for the rest of their career, but they were never incorporated into the band officially. The Four Tops knew how to have a group. And to think of the Tops being together for 41 years when some bands couldn’t stay together 41 days is just amazing.

The Four Tops are definitely one of the greatest groups ever. Levi Stubbs had an amazing voice.
“It’s the Same Old Song” is a clever song, and I love it, but not as much as “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch). That’s in my Top Ten of all-time songs.
Just Brilliant!

Hope it’s good to recall it. There are some songs I forget and I’m thankful I did.
