Cutting up Vegetables for Stew

Pretty picked up a package of stew meat a couple of days ago at the expensive grocery store (because she could walk there and back). She asked me this evening if I'd dice sweet onions and bell peppers for the stew, so I diced up two onions and two bell peppers. (And ate a few slices of each while cutting them up.
)
I also chunked two large carrots for the stew, as well.
I can smell the stew cooking in the slow cooker now.
What do you add to your stew? And do you like stew during the spring?
Sliced onions. Photo is mine.

We don't make stews often enough, in my opinion.

Yes to potatoes, green beans and garlic powder is a must for a stew. I won't eat peas.

@DaddyEvil Same here!! I am limited on the peas. I will eat them in though in a stew, but a whole serving of green peas as a veggie with a meal is not my favorite.

@kareng I can't stand the mushy feel in my mouth. I won't eat butter beans, either.

I don't like peas so we don't buy or use them. But most anything else is welcome in a good stew!
Some people think stew is a cold weather food. We will eat it all year round.

@DaddyEvil I love stew, and sometimes I will add dumplings to it just before it is ready to come out of the oven, that is delicious too.

@Juliaacv I agree, dough twists added to a stew just before it's done is delicious, too.

We don't add peas but we do the rest of those... I'm glad you enjoy stew, as well.

I love beef stew. Such good comfort food. And it’s made differently by pretty much every single cook.

@MarieCoyle I don't know how expensive it is. I don't ask for steak often. We usually buy hamburger. Pretty bought two steaks a week or so ago. I fried them and then made a steamer bag of mixed veggies to go with them.

I remember when beef for stew was very inexpensive....not that long ago, actually. Now it is usually about the same price as a roast or a round steak per pound. We eat very little red meat. From what I have read, we are going to be paying even more for it, so when I have it I enjoy every bite!

I don't make stew but I should because I like it. I haven't priced beef lately, but I bet the price is through the roof

I don't know... Pretty buys everything for us now so I don't even go into the stores. If we can't afford something I ask for, she just doesn't buy it. (Sometimes she decides if I NEED something and, if she doesn't think I should have it, she says we can't afford it.

I like stewed meat. Sometimes I add either potatoes or sweet potatoes to it. I’ve never used a slow cooker though. Don’t even own one.

A slow cooker works really well. You just add whatever to it, set the temp and leave it alone until it's done.
I've never used sweet potatoes in a stew. I always use white potatoes in it.

@lovebuglena I don't like sweet flavors cooked in my meals. I'll eat a sweet dessert after the meal, though. I don't know why I don't like something sweet during the meal.

@DaddyEvil it’s really good. I’ve used the sweet potatoes and also the oriental yam. This one is white inside.

That sound delicious! Unfortunately for me, Pretty won't eat mushrooms.
When Pretty was little, I used to pick morels out in the pasture, soak them overnight (to evict any bugs trying to live on them), slice them up, roll them in spiced flour and fry them in butter. Pretty LOVED those. After my family sold the farm, we don't have a place to pick morels anymore.

I'm sorry... I don't have a problem with cutting up onions. I've heard you can cut them up under water but that just seems silly to me. Maybe you could wear glasses to keep the fumes away from your eyes?

I pretty much stick to the basics. I just put in beef, potatoes, carrots, celery, diced tomatoes, onions, and stuff like that. I never buy the pre-cut stew pieces. Much too expensive. I just get a chuck roast or rump roast and cut it up myself. Saves a few bucks.

We don't buy beef often so when we do, we buy what we want. (I do ask for ground beef once a month or so. Pretty buys a 5 lbs tube of the 80/20 beef and a 2 lbs tube of the Premium pork sausage and I break those down into 1 lbs mix packs for the freezer.)

@porwest Walmart here doesn't carry a 10 lbs tube. The 5 lbs tubes are the largest they carry.
You know, not everybody is like you, right? Some of us do what we can and count ourselves lucky. Being an as shole about it only makes me not want to talk to you.
I feel sorry for your wife, having to keep working while you goof off all the time, just so you can have health insurance.

@DaddyEvil I do that but usually get the 10-pound tube. I make one into a two-pound pack for meatloaf and the rest are in 1-pound packs. I just prefer to never waste money needlessly, and so for me, saving a buck a pound to cut my own beef stew meat just makes sense to me.
Save on the things you need so you can afford the things that you want. I guess if you want to save two minutes and waste $4 or $5...you've accomplished that.

Chicken stew is delicious, too. We don't make that very often, either. (She hates chopping veggies up but I don't mind. She just has to let me know how she wants something cut up and I'll cut it up and store it in the fridge until she's ready to use it.)
I do most of the cooking here so I'm used to cutting up veggies. Onions make her eyes water while they don't bother me.
Do you grow the spring onions yourself? (We call those green onions or bunch onions and we grow them in a container on the front porch. I go out and clip the green tops of them off and slice those up in different foods I'm making and leave the onion in the ground so it grows more tops to use in about a week or two.)

@Dreamerby Oh, I see... Most people buy them here, too. We just buy them one time at the beginning of spring and plant the onion bulbs and harvest the green tops all summer and into the fall every year.

@shaggin She doesn't avoid salt in anything else and will usually eat almost anything I cook, which definitely has enough salt that I can taste it. She always tries to get me to eat stuff with no salt and I just add salt to it later.

You're right, there's nothing better than a good stew.
Pretty didn't add enough salt for my liking so I add a bit more after I take a serving out of the crock pot.

I had once cut onions and it was a horrible experience. My eyes became full of tears and I was unable to keep my eyes open.
One of my sister's is married. Another is with me; but she will get married; too; this year.
Now my wife and my mother are with me and they both are great cookes.
