Sixty five trips around the sun. That’s nearly 24,000 spins of the earth in days. I should be dizzy! Oh, wait, I am dizzy.
That’s what I’m doing this month: celebrating my birthday by celebrating songs that were released the year I was born. This song got a lot of spins in its time, and since, so it’s probably dizzy, too.
Here’s today’s song from 1960.
Save the Last Dance for Me - The Drifters
And you’re thinking, hey, didn’t you use them last month in the 70-year-old songs? Yes, thanks for noticing!
The song last month was “Steamboat,” the first song of the Ben E. King era as the lead vocalist. This song was the last single released before King left the band.
And this song has made the rounds. Growing up in country music, I remember Buck Owens singing it. Heck, Randy Meisner even covered it on his first post-Eagles album (best left unheard). But there’s nothing like those sweet voices of The Drifters to entice you to the dance floor.
Oh, and speaking of “dance floor,” this song was written by Doc Pomus from personal experience: he had polio, and he couldn’t dance with his wife at their wedding. So she danced with everyone else while he watched.
Now you know.
Save the Last Dance for Me
Written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman
Recorded by The Drifters
From Save the Last Dance for Me, 1960

Yes, I remember you using them last month! Do I get extra points for that?
Amazing that this song is 65 years old, it seems so recent.
A bit sad to hear about the song writer. His wife dancing with everyone else whilst he watched, must have been, at the very least, bitter sweet.

@FourWalls Yeah, I did say I wasn’t keen on the brass instruments. I don’t mind a bit of Kenny Ball, but only in short blasts.

Agreed. You know I love Buck Owens, but NO WAY should he have done this.

I know the song and the group; but I don't know if it's this version that I'm familiar with.

Love them and love this song, I will tell you I saw a really touching video on YouTube with Leonard Cohen singing this song along with the audience and this white haired man sounded so sincere it was nice,

I watched that. He seemed almost overwhelmed by the audience singing it.
