Example, you ask a person for direction or location but he/she doesn't know it. Would you say thank you although the person is unable to help you? if i am in the situation, i will not forget to say thank you to show that i am a civilied man.

yah of course i would. even though they couldnt help me, they at least took their time to listen to my question..and attempted to help me even though they were unsuccessful. its only the polite thing to do to thank someone..and its not like it takes that much extra effort to say it.

It is polite and common courtesy to thank someone who gave their time to listen to your question. I always say "thank you" because it is the right thing to do, and that is regardless of whether the peson could help me or not.

I would always say Thank You even if they could not help me, as I am in the Service industry and help people get Cabs to where they need to go, and I feel even if we cannot get them a cab in the time they need, they should at least have the decency to be able to Thank us for our time.

Saying THANK YOU is a sign of respect, that's right, being a modern civilised citizen. It's jus that... if you say thank you to another person who eventually can't help you, in the future she feels somehow motivated to know the answer or just trying to suggest the answer, just because someone thanked him for nothing. I guess it's a psychological thing.

Of course. It's for taking the time to listen to my question and being ready to help. It was just unfortunate that he can't help me.

I say thank you even if I do not get any help from a person because They were patient enough to listen to my problem and were kind enough to tell me that they would not be able to help instead of doing anything

I would do it. Its a sign of courtessy and respect. Saying Thank you is so simple but some people are not saying it for some reasons that i can not understand. maybe they are ashamed or what. :-)
