When I begin a novel, I really have to pay attention to what is going on in the beginning so I can get all of the characters and different story plots straight in my mind. After that, it's not that much mental work. If the writer has too many story lines going on at once that will be tied in at the end, I sometimes have to flip back and re-read something to just keep up! I would think it would be super hard to listen to a book and be able to keep everything straight in your mind!

I agree with you there, I think it must be very hard to keep on track of what's exactly happening. I prefer reading books much more. You can read passages you like a lot or didn't catch at the first time reading it just again. I also usually don't like the voices of the reader - it's often too excessivly emphasized. Audio books are taking also a bit of fantasy from you because the reader tells you exactly how the person says something..
I don't like them very much.

One of the 1st audio books I tried to listen to was a Star Trek novelization of a movie. Now, I'm a big time trek fan, so I couldn't get into listening to the wrong voices for the characters! LOL Gave up on that one, and my mind wandered on the other...so that was that!

I used to have a data entry job that allowed me to listen to books on tape. Although they were enjoyable, it just was not the same as reading the novel. Many books on tape are missing quite a bit of information and some of them left out really important events. I would often listen to a book on tape I had already read or would read the novel after listening to the book on tape.

My son is a truck driver and he likes listening to unabridged audio books...the longer the better.

I've listened to a few audio books, but I find my mind wanders too easily when I listen, so I usually prefer to read the books.

No, I prefer to read, any time. At first, reading goes much faster than listening. And, exactly as you said, I can any time go back and re-read, for to keep up, or just to enjoy again the pages I liked at most. Audio books are great for blind people but until I can see, I'll better read myself.

Audio books make me sleepy and makes me lose intrest in the story. I had to use them in highschool. I find i much more rewarding for me to just read it myself.

Audio books are fine I guess if you're really busy or if you like to "listen" to books while doing chores around the house or something. Or even on a long drive. But honestly otherwise I think they're kind of silly & you can't get the same experience that you do w/ reading a book. Maybe I'm just old fashioned!
