my 4-year old's still drinking hers from her baby bottle. tried to get her to drink from a glass but she finished only half a glass whereas if she drinks from the bottle, she can finish up to 3 bottles at a time. so i figured, for as long as she drinks her milk, it doesn't matter how anymore. what do you think?

I think 4 years old is too old for a bottle. And kids really should be drinking that much milk anyway. Last I heard they recommend like 1 glass a day. My kids only drink milk with their cereal in the morning.
They all stopped taking bottles when they stopped taking formula at 12 month old. They never had anything but formula in their bottles. Milk, juice and water belonged in the cups. They just now stopped using sippy cups (they are 6, 5 and 4) and drink from small cups now. Kids don't need milk and juice. They should only be getting 1 (6-8oz) glass a day at the most.
I think for your daughter it is more of a crutch now. She is used to it but it is unhealthy. She is old enough to tell her that she doesn't need it and just take it away and give her a sippy cup or regular cup. She may cry but she will get over it.

Well I was brought up that as soon as they can sit up it is time for a cup. With mine as soon as they turned one I walked them to the trash can and let them throw it away and say "bye bye"
I feel that the longer that you wait the more dependent the child grows. We as parents have to set the guidelines not the children. The child will drink from a bottle for as long as you allow it. 4 yes it is time to let the bottle go.

A child should be off the bottle no later then 18 months my children were off before 1 years of age or at 1 years of age. Most people believe that nothing will happen to their babies teeth ,but drinking a bottle at this age will ruin her teeth they will turn brown and rot out seen it yesterday at my childs school pretty little girl smiled and teeth were half gone and rotten. I know this because my daughter is a dental assistant she see a lot of cases

good thing my first 2 boys have perfect teeth even if they got off the bottle at the age of 7 already. must be why i have no qualms about leting my little girl continue with the bottle coz there's no precedence (yet) of a problem. never mind, i'll try getting her off it again. thanks for the response!

Your daughter is to old to be drinking from a baby bottle. Try letting her use a straw when she drinks her milk.

A straw is a great suggestion. I didn't think of it because I had to require my kids to use sippy cups until this past year because there was always a baby in the house. Someone was always knocking the older kids' cups over so they all had to use a sippy. Now that the youngest of the 3 is 4 years old they all use regular cups but I'm having a hard time teaching them to keep them up where the baby can't reach them. She knocked over 3 cups of water onto herself yesterday because the kids didn't put them out of her reach. I have had to ban cups from the living room.
Get her one of those funky curled straws or pretty colored ones. Or they have cups (usually near where they sell kids dishes) that have characters on them and straws sticking out of the top. She may like that. And there are also sippy cups that look like sports bottles with flip up straws. They don't spill but look more like a real cup. My kids loved them but cleaning 3 of them was a pain in the but (there were a bunch of pieces on the inside).

I think she will let you know when she is ready to give up her bottle. I had my bottle til i was 5. Maybe it is her security? I just tried to teach my 6 month old son how to hold a sippy cup. He holds it pretty good and just tried to naw on the rubber. (he is teething) Just give your daughter a chance!

this morning when my daughter woke me up for her customary morning milk (she sleeps with us), i told her what a nice set of teeth she has (did i mention she's vain? he, he). and if only she'd stop drinking from a bottle already coz she's gonna destroy her teeth. she said, mom, i'll stop when i'm 5 (in april yet) coz then, i'll be big already and i can take care of myself then. (where do kids get their ideas?) i said, promise? she said yes with 1 eyebrow raised. sigh!

First, she's your daugther so you have a right to keep her on the bottle if you want. However, I dont agree with this. She's almost in kindergarden. She should not being drinking a bottle. If she only drinks half her milk, praise her for drinking that half. Throw away the bottles and she will drink from a cup. She's not doing it because she knows you'll let her have her bottle. By 4, it's a comfort thing. She's fully capable of drinking from a cup.

Does it help to put it in a sippy cup. I pulled the bottle from my daughter when she was 10 mths old and made her drink from a sippy cup.
What does her doctor tell you? It is bad for their teeth at the age of 4 it could cause her to need braces and other bad repercussions.

lol! thanks, both of you for the input. so far, it's okay with her doctor. we live in a country where it's okay for 4, 5 even 6 yr olds to still be drinking from a bottle. sure, there's always the danger of having crooked or bad teeth but then, there's always the brace and teeners here consider it a status symbol. lol!

I'd agree that it can be hurtful to the child to remain on the bottle that long. They need to learn to drink from a cup without a lid by then if possible even. Just take the bottle. After 2 days she won't even miss it - If you want put all the bottles in a pretty bag with a bow. Hang that bag on a tree branch outside with her and tell her the bottle fairy will come get them for the new babies in the world that don't have bottles ! Run out later and get rid of it. Lol she will think shes doing something good for the world of babies!

There is a thing of drinking to much milk. My daughter was in the hospital for 10 days. They said she had low iron and high white blood cells because she drank to much milk. I think she is to old for a bottle because when she goes to school she wont be able to take it with her.I would keep an eye on her teeth because they will start decaying from drinking the milk from a bottle. My daughter was 2 1/2 when I got rid of the bottle and by the age of 5 her teeth decayed and had to get them pulled and if I didnt it would spread to her othr teeth.

ohhhh! that's too bad! my little girl, however, doesnt have the anemia problem coz she also eats 3 full meals a day. and evertime she drinks her milk, (which is during bedtimes only) i see to it that she drinks water afterwards. if we forget, she gets her own water. it's kind of a routine to her already.

she just likes it for comfort. take it from her. tell her you are gonna give all her bottles to the bottle faries. Put it in a bag than tie it to a tree. During the night ditch the bottles and replace them with a toy or something. the next morning your child will be so pleased with the toy the faries left!! bottles at this age can really mess up their teeth! good luck

people are nuts to make there kids drink from a sippy cup at 12 months. My son is 6 months and he holds the sippy cup and will maybe drink an oz. from it. But I'm not making him give up his bottle!!!

Most pediatricians and pediatric-dentists are recommending you wean from the bottle starting at 6 months, but definitely by 12 months. They encourage you to use sipee-tipee cups as apposed to a bottle, because bottle sucking is a leading cause of baby-tooth decay and well as other dental problems. Also, babies and toddlers use 'sucking' as a way of comforting, but if it is encouraged after the toddler developmental stages, it can become an insecurity issue.
In your case, a 4 year old should be definitely weaned. You definitely won't want your 4 year old to go to school or have peer interaction with others her age, because they will immediately identify her as different. A 4 year old can rationalize what behaviors are baby-ish, and you are setting your 4 year old up to be identified in such a way. It can indeed hinder her peer-interaction and socialization.
I'd start by encouraging a sipee-tipee cup and if you are concerned about her not getting enough milk then encourage her with more frequent smaller amounts of milk. You need to remember that a 4 year old also gets a source of dairy from other things like cheeses, yogurts, and even ice cream. A 4 year old on average only needs 3 servings of dairy products a day, so you don't have to only count on milk as a way to get your 4 year old to have the nutritionally required amount.
here's a good nutritional article for you to read (specifically dairy section):

My doctors told me that by 1 year of age they wanted my girls off a bottle. It has something to do with the development of their teeth. When children use a bottle longer than that it was cause dammage to their teeth causing them to not grow in properly.

it is not healthy that your 4 year old child is still drinking milk from a bottle.
bottle feeding should never continue beyond three years maximum.
change your child's habits and get had to start drinking milk from a glass even if it is a little messy and takes a little longer initially

All my kids drank from a bottle till they entered first grade..so that was when they were 7. My eldest is 18 and i dont think it had a negative effect on him. Like you, when I tried shifting to a glass, he stopped drinking. I asked their pediatrician and she said that it was ok

I think as long she is drinking milk its alright but u have to try to get her acquainted her to drink milk from glass because she can't go on drinking milk from the bottle all her life..
I think as time passes she would change herself but in the meantime u have to teach her..

She should have been on a cup a long time ago. 4 year olds don't need milk, yet alone 3 bottles of it. Take the bottle away and that's all.
