Oh My Gosh! Did you hear about the pit bull puppy!?

It was on a news commentator show tonight when I was flipping the channels to find something to watch! In Bosier City, which is in Louisiana, supposedly a couple had fallen asleep watching tv. Their little baby was in a car seat on the floor next to them or between them. When they woke up later, the pit bull puppy had chewed off 4 of the baby's toes leaving just one. The commentator was saying the couple was lying. At the first bite...the baby would have started screaming and they could have stopped what happened before the baby lost 4 toes! Is that not just the most horrible thing you've ever heard of! And callers were calling in worried about what was going to happen to the pit bull puppy! Oh my gosh! I can't believe it!

Where did you find this story? I have checked all the online news sources and there is nothing about this happening. My fiance said that there is an urban legend very similiar to this story.

I checked CNN online and the story didn't pop up. If you can find it, send me the link. I did find the urban legend for this though when I was looking online.

I read the news story from the info you posted estherlou and am appalled by it. Firstly, how could the parents leave a month old baby in a baby seat while they went to sleep on a mattress. The dog might only be a pup but to leave it inside with the baby when they were obviously lying down on the mattress is also deplorable and irresponsible.
An earlier respondent mentioned that people should be licenced to have pit bull dogs, but I think that some people should be licenced to have children.
Sadly for this little child, she will now have to learn to walk without toes on one foot, and that will not be easy. I hope the deal harshly with the parents, and maybe get the truth of what really happened. It doesn't mention the condition the parents were in when they took the child to hospital.

This still appals me estherlou but I have seen nothing more on the article and what, if anything, happened to the parents here.
Thanks for giving me best response for this discussion estherlou. :)

It was a tiny 6 week old puppy!! A puppy would not do something like that in a viscious way! If anything, he smelled food or formula on the toes and started chewing on them thinking they were food and babies toes are so small Im sure it wouldnt have taken much to bite them off. The puppy shouldnt be punished because the parents were neglectful. He didnt know any better.

Maybe the pit bull bit off all 4 toes at the same time and the baby cried a soundless cry. If a baby cries so much, it's like no sound comes out at all, like they turn so red and sometimes blue, right? Why will the dog bite a baby's foot? That's so pitiful.

yes a pit bulls mouth is quite big i think he took a bite of all 4 teeth at the same time and i think he was over aggressively cleaning the babies toes probably , had a dog that bit off her babies foot trying too clean it up after delivery whil she was licking the placenta, i think the puppy probably was trying to clean the toes and when it bleed he probably kept at the foot and small infants may not always feel all that much pain some dont cry all that much from circumcisions and my baby sister didnt cry more that one surprised lil cry when we pierced her ears

Yes, I saw that last night. i thought the same thing. Would they have not heard the baby screaming or something? And the puppy did look so piteful sitting there shaking. It just broke my heart. But I think they are lying about the baby because they should have awoken after 1 toe. I mean come on. I wake up when my kids cough at night from a coma sleep and they slept through that...I dont believe that. Thats worse than Susan Smith telling those lies.

I live in PA and i dont know of any cities or counties that dont allow you to have pitbulls. I do know that you must have a insurance policy out on your dog 25,000 on a female and 50,000 on a male. I live in a major city so i know most the laws and i live in the capitol. So i was wondering which town do you live in that you get cited for have a pit. That is against you const. rights.

I really hate irresponsible pitbull owners. They always makes pitbull look bad in news. I just hope people will be well educated to know that pitbulls are harmless but, they are still animals and responsibility for these animals should be taken into consideration.

yes, If you ask anybody who specializes in dog behavior they will tell you that pit bulls make the best family pets. The owners are what make them bad. There is no way a puppy of any kind can chew off toes, there teeth are not fully develeped yet.

Yeah I agree with you. Everyone is complaining about the dog but he's just a dog and doesn't know better. The parents are the irresponsible one's who left the baby alone with the dog and fell asleep. They deserve to have their toes bitten off by a dog.

People and their need of attention. I don't understand why people think that any attention is good attention. Sheesh. To think, they upset all these people into feeling bad just so they could have their attention. Nastey

WoW !!! That is crazy !!! I actually have not heard that story before !!! But I think that It's not the pitbulls fault !!! People need to stop acting like pitbulls are such horrible dog's, I have had 2 and they are the best dog's I could ask for !!! It is how they are trained !!! Some one can train a poodle or chiuaua to do the same things that they can train a pitbull to do !!! So stop blaiming the pitbulls !!! I do also think it is the parent's fault for being so irresponsible and leaving their child in the carseat on the floor !!! And who the heck can't here a dog walk into the room or eating their kid's toes off !!! Come on now !!!

I think that when a pit bull is involved the story is more sensationalized. Pit bulls are not bad dogs. They just have a bad reputation. And I do think the parents are lying. Did they do tests on the baby's feet to see if the evidence agreed with the accusations?

The pitbull probably went straight for the throat like the ones that fight are trained to do. That is probably why they never heard the baby cry.
I can see a ferret doing this as well. As ferrett are know to like to bite toes. We once owned a ferret. One night we woke up to my son screaming his head off. We looked under the covers and the ferret had his big toe in its mouth. His toe was bleeding and looked rather bad. Needless to say the ferret was thrown up against the wall by my husband. (The ferret was not hurt). We have no idea how th ferret got out of his cage. But within a week I had sold it to a co-worker who I told what happen. I also told her I wanted to get rid of it.

I'm sure by now things have been all sorted out with this but there does seem to be something wrong with the original story. Babies and parents do not sleep THAT soundly under normal circumstances. I would guess at the very least the parents were under the influence of something and if they were it wouldn't surprise me at all if they hadn't slipped the baby something to. It doesn't take much cold medicine to knock a baby out cold.
My concern about this whole thing is that it continues the bad stereotype of pit bulls. Pit bulls are not bad dogs, they just sometimes have bad owners. No, I wouldn't leave our pit bull alone with out baby but I wouldn't leave ANY dog (or cat) alone with the baby either.

This situation really sends out my heart to the pitbull and to the baby, it sounds like the parents are pretty irresponsible if you ask me! How could the dog chew off 4 toes before the parents would wake up from the babies cries?? Sounds like something is missing to the story if you ask me, I think the parents are lying about something. I think it's a bad idea to have any dog sleeping in the same room as an infant anyways, but I will be following this story more because I think there are things missing or lies have been told.

I think the parents of this poor baby are retarted. That's my opinion. They should have never left the baby within reach of a puppy to begin with. For another, the puppy should have been crated or something if they couldn't keep an eye on it. They should have heard the baby crying when the puppy bit the 1st toe. It's not the puppy's fault. The reason people are worrid about the puppy is because it will now most-likely be put to sleep because it was unfortunate enough to get in the hands of some very irresponsible people.

God that's awful, such a freak accident...it's hard to know if the parents are lying or not, the baby could have been crying so hard that it wasn't making any noise, and the parents could be heavy sleepers.
I know one night my sister was asleep and i needed to get something in her room, of course she had locked the door and no matter how loud i banged on the door and shouted she didn't wake up!...

I agree with the first person.Would'nt the parents have heard the baby cry?Something is really wrong with this picture. They need to have the parents investigated. That sounds like child abuse to me.

Poor dog, and poor child what terrible lying parents. Babies are terribly loud and if the baby was right next to or between them, they would have been immediately awoken when the dog even touched the babies toes. Poor baby I wonder what they did to the baby in reality and I hope the dog will be ok.
