Staying indoors with children

I take care of my 4 and 6 year old children at home. Now that the weather's not so good, we're indoors quite a bit. I don't like them to have the TV on all day, and they seem to tire of their toys quickly. I feel like I'm constantly trying to find creative things for them to do. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, what kind of at-home activities do your children like to be involved with?

Even with the weather not so good, the kids need to get out as often as possible.A little fresh air helps their health and mood. Look around in your community for free play groups and story times. Check to see if your library checks out educational toys. They are still at an age when they love to be a helper, so modify your household work to occassionally let them help. Fold laundry, put dishes away. Sweep the floor, wash windows. It makes kids feel competent and useful when they can take part in the household.

Lots of good ideas there! However, neither of them like to help with the chores unless it's dusting. They love the duster. I have to bribe them just to make their beds! I do have them in extra curricular activities (gymnastics, ballet, and girl scouts), they also like to use the computer and they have a Playstation 2, as well as a V-Smile. We also do crafts and play with playdough. It just seems that they get bored with everything so quickly. I don't remember being like that as a child. I remember playing with one toy for hours and hours. My girls tend to jump from one thing to the next so quickly. Why do you think that is?

I forgot to mention, that they get to play outside each day at school for a little bit, but most of the winter they have coughs and colds and so when they are home I hate to take them out to play for fear they will get sicker.

Great website. Thanks for sharing that with us. I really like the snacks and desserts section. Especially the "DUH why didn't I think of that" frozen grapes. Keep up the good work.

We do a lot of crafting. There are numerous sites on the internet that will provide you with free projects to do. There are some that go by age and are cheap enough to do, using regular household items. We also do puppet shows out of puppets they've made with old (clean...LOL) socks, add some buttons and some yarn for hair and there you go! For the curtain (to hid behind)we use an expandble curtain rod in the hallway and lower it down to where kids can reach their little hands over it. They make up stories as they go along.

I love the curtain rod idea for the puppet show! I will have to try that, and I bet the girls will love it too. Thanks!

Well, I do have this problem as well. But, since we are indoors so much and her toys get boring to her, I do allow her to watch a little more tv than normal. But only her videos such as Blues Clues, Barney and Dora. Because she learns good things from that type of program. We also spend a lot of time playing v smile baby.....

Well, I have tried that. What happens is, my youngest will sit in front of the tv all day long or play the computer for hours and hours...and my oldest will do nothing but whine to me about how bored she is. Now mind you, they have a spare bedroom that is their playroom. It's filled with toys galore, on top of all the other stuff I've mentioned in my previous posts. It's like I have to constantly tell my oldest what to do to keep busy, she doesn't find anything on her own...and like I said, my youngest is happy to sit and veg in front of the tv or computer all day.

One of the GREATEST gifts you can give a child is to let them use their imagination. Don't worry so much about "giving" them creative things to do. Kids can make a career out of cardboard boxes and time. That's not to say you shouldn't read to them (that's VITAL) and guide them in play but they need to use their minds to entertain themselves.

What do you do when they just won't use their imagination to find something on their own to do?

I have this problem alsoi. And my son is a very energetic 2 1/2 years old boy. Whatever I do he does the same. I have to give him the bowls in order to hit them and make noise or to pretend he is making dinner. I even give him old stuff and a screwdriver to unscrew the screws.

I love the Fisher Price pretend toys like Little People and that type because the kids at that age can spend hours playing pretend games with them. Keep a scrap box with anything that kids can use for their crafts and let them create their own designs. Another thing is to let the kids help with chores by making games up

When I did daycare at home I always tried to do lots of hands on things with the kids. We always did some type of arts and crafts. We colored. We did simple things in the kitchen, the rolled cookies are easy. Also kids that age need learning so read books to them, pick a letter of the alphabet each week and do things centered around just that letter. Make the most of it, and there will you can still bundle them up once and a while to go outdoor even if it's just a few mintues.

Reading is something we've done every day since they were infants. My 6 year old is now reading and writing on her own. I'm really just trying to get some ideas on how to keep them busy for longer periods of time. Anything I find for them to do (like crafts), only keeps their interest for a short period of time. It makes it hard on me, because I feel like I'm constantly trying to come up with new ideas to keep them happy and entertained. I just don't remember being like that as a child. I could sit and play with one toy, like Lego's, for hours!

My children are nearly the same age as yours-4 and 7. Often times we bake things-like make cookies or homemade bread. We also spend hours coloring in coloring books. The old toys will become new when you sit down and play with them. My son, who is 7 loves to construct things with legos and we all really enjoy building things together. Another thing we do is get washable paints and decorate the windows. (It comes off very easy with just warm water.) We also have interactive time on the computer by playing online games and hearing online stories narrated on nickjr.com. Hope some of those suggestions help ya out :)

I have that same problem too. I found out my kids love to help cook or wash dishes. They would help grad the cheese or carrots, peel potatoes they love to measure in the measuring cups. they also love to bake cookies. they do most everything, but I put in the oven. and they are 6 and 9. even my 2 year old loves helping she loves to sort out my silverware, and that is her chore only. It does take extra time, But its better then them watching tv all day. And my kids give me a hard time to do any chores. I hope this helps.

I have that problem too, What I will try is to get them help me cook and wash dishes. they love to work in the kitchen, but mainly help cook or bake cookies. they like to do the measuring part too, so they are also learning while helping. It dose take a much longer time with there help , so you have to be patent with them. Hope this helps.

Hmmmm, see...this interests me. I wonder what it is about kids nowadays that make them that way? Because honestly, the most time my girls will be interested in something long enough is when they are in front of the tv or computer like you said. They could seriously spend hours watching tv or on the computer, but otherwise, they get bored with everything else so quickly! Do you think maybe they are introducing computers into the schools too quickly? Both my daughters have and use computers in their schools, and my youngest daughter is in preschool. They both use the computer at home too, but I really try to limit that because I feel they need to be more active. I'm curious when you started to notice you were bored unless you were on the computer on in front of the tv?

If children are not busy in studies then ask them to do following 1 cleanup their room, obviously with your help. 2. To make different figures out of dough and you roast them, 3.to draw pictures and get them framed later on.

We pull out the craft box. Crafts are very big in our house. I cover the entire kitchen table in paper and then lay out a bunch of craft items and let the kids just go nuts. I tend to go to Michaels and buy some inexpensive kits to keep around for just these times.
We also create treasure hunts. One person will create clues by drawing pictures that lead to another picture and so on until you get to the treasure which is usually some stuffed animal or toy that we grabbed just for this. The treasure gets used over and over again because the fun is in following the clues and not getting a treasure.
We also put on little puppet type shows. We use stuffed animals and barbies and make up a show. My daughter loves this.
We also have some great reading time and play board games. We started board games with my daughter at an early age and now she loves them.
you are not alone in this problem. good luck and happy holidays.

Yes, children tire of things fast. I usually have my son read a book or something. You can try reading a novel to them (like something by C.S. Lewis) or you guys can do activities and games together. Find a board game you can all play and understand, it should be fun!
Also try to play imagination games, make up characters of your own and play out your own stories together! That's what we used to do when I was a kid and was in the house a long time together.
