Welfare Abuse

My past work experience put me face to face with the public. Many of the people were on state assistance. How proudly many of them were to show me their latest tattoo and tell me how much it cost to have it done! Many carried cell phones, smoked name-brand cigarettes, went to the most expensive hair stylist in town and visited the tanning salon regularly.
It was hard at times not to say anything to them. I worked hard for my money. The taxes that were being taken out of mine and many others paychecks every week are meant to give a helping hand to those in need. This to me is not what it is meant for.

There is so much Welfare Abuse now days that is it so sad. I don't understand why they can't see it the people go in and see the Social Workers that they aren't caught. Today with computers you would think it would be easy to a better back ground check on people.
I have seen people who are really married, the husband goes to work and the wife and kids are on welfare as she doesn't carry the mans last name.
I don't understand they seem to have more money then most and get like you have said: Designer clotthes, Cell Phones and so on.. even drive a new car and live in a nice big house.
Something should be done as there are so many that need it and can't get on for some dumb reason, but go in and lie and they get a Silver Platter with all the trimings handed to them.

That is exactly how it works the ones that are honest have to fight for things and just get by and that is what I said on the Phone to the Social on Tuesday when I was trying to claim for my new Place they know I am going to be on the Street and I am a sick Person but do you know they don't care and I was basically told I would have got more help if I was just a Jobless Person and not Disabled

You are soooooooooooooo right. Our system is all messed up. They should get assistance when in need, but they use it to support them. When my husband had an optical store, the people would come in to get free glasses off the state. They would show a card, listing all the people in the family. And, there would be like 9 or 10 children. And, to make it worse, it would say, "unborn..coming." And they collected on that too. The middle class work so hard and cannot even afford proper medical attention, but they are "over qaulified" for any help. It is all messed up. This is a sore spot with me, as my husband is 70, working full time now. And we cannot even afford our medications, and he cannot retire. He is an educated licensed man.

This is just not right. I've known of a lot of these welfare families that keep having more kids just to increase the welfare checks and to keep them coming also. This country's welfare system really does need to be reformed so that those that need it get it instead of those that are just too lazy to work for it.

As of a few years ago you could only count up to 7 kids for assistance. Even that number is a little too high. The people who are abusing the system was raised as welfare kids and know no other way to live..bull pucky.
Welfare should be for the ones who do work and suddenly hit on hard times. Find jobs for the habitual welfare fraudulants, and let it be for the ones in need, when the need arises.
And look out when the need arises, because if you have any items that could get you money..they will tell you to get rid of it and use the money from that to live on. I knew a guy who was down and out and needed some food stamps in order to feed his family, well he had an old classic car that he had worked on and pampered for years..he was told to sell it, and use that money. It sucks!
How others do it and get by with it is beyond me. But it is done.

Sad that so many can have nice things and others that struggle and work hard for what they have, need to sell them to survive.

Just because people are poor doesn't mean that they can't "have." They deserve to have nice things just like you and me. Their cell phone or hair-do might be the only nice thing they have. It also could be a gift that they've received. It is not our duty to judge other people's purchases, especially if we are not giving our time to help them.

Well I don't know what they are getting but believe me Love I can not afford anything like that at all
2 years ago I was bullied out of my Job because I was Diagnosed with a not curable Illness, my Doctor then said I would not be able to work again as I got a lot worse during the time of fighting the Company after being there 8 years
I didn't have the strength in the end to take them to court.I have worked all my adult Life and it was a shock not to anymore
It took me 18 months to get my Disability allowance and I have to say I am barely getting by
I now have to move out of my Sons House and I am now fighting for the Benefits to give me Rent money so how do these People do it
You will find that most of them are working on the side and scamming the System
So please do not think it is everyone who lives like that as I certainly don't

There are some decient people that are on welfare, yet there is also a lot of them that scam the hell out of the system. I have a friend that has a garage of his own (not an actual business but more "on the side") and he is making a killing fixing these vehicles, I know as I said he is a friend. Meanwhile his wife, who lives in the same house with him is collecting welfare (cash/food/medical)for herself, their 4 kids, and him because he claims that he cannot work yet he does it every day in his shop, making 1-5 hundred dollars every damn week. While I had to fight my butt off to get on disability because of a TBI and I cannot work, except for here online since 85% of the time my body doesn't want to work right. I would love to be able to work in that garage and make that type of money, but I cannot, so I have to find other sources of income online to augment my little stipend of $603 per month. Hell my pay is so far under poverty that it is not funny, thank god for the internet or else I would not be able to afford the internet that I am using now. That is what upsets mee is that all those scammers make it extreamly hard for people that truely need it!! Sorry about the piggyback to your post, just worked up a little. I am so sorry to hear about your condition and I hope that you get better or atleast some relief!

I agree with you totally. These people that abuse the system are just plain lazy. And the kids suffer alot.I think the government should make it harder for people to get assistance or at least screen the applicants better.Everyone knows that most of these people lie just to get help because they don't want to get out there and try to find a job or go to school to better themselves.

There are some that get assistance and are not given enough to pay just the essentials like rent and lights. Others seem to have more than their fair share.

They need to be held accountable for the money they receive.

I think the US should put in place a system such as Canadas. The people who receive assistance must show just what exactly they've spent their money on. Monthly, bi-monthly, however but done so they can't spend the money foolishly.

I'm afraid I wouldn't last long in a job like that. That's just not right. How on earth can these people afford these things if they are needing state assistance. I'm afraid I'd open my mouth and say something I shouldn't at one point or another and get fired from my job.

I agree. I live in New York and this state seems to payout so much to people who shouldn't get it. I have had to have state help with health insurance twice for medical problems. Both times I could have gotton so much money to more than support me, but I was happy to just get the medical bills paid for. I could have gotton food stamps too but I didn't see a need for it. I think they should stop paying out cash. Okay give people free health care and food stamps are okay too. But I wish they would make it so the food stamps couldn't be used for potato chips and soda. That's not what I call food. I am greatful that New York paid for my huge bills for my gall bladder surgery and other things, but even more so that I was able to get better and take care of myself again.

I have experienced this type of thing in my last job, but unfortunately this does happen. We do work hard and pay big taxes, only to see how some live and sometimes are better off than us in a sense. Sometimes I did find it hard not to say anything, and am glad not to have to face it anymore.

This is one of the things I don't miss about working at my old job. I would especially get ticked when I told them that a service was not covered and they refused to pay for it, even if it was for their child!

I think that WAY too many people in the U.S. take advantage of the system. Welfare is the one taken the most. I think people look at this as a way to stay home and NOT work and NOT TRY to work. I don't have a problem at all with people using assistance when they really need it. But I think that Welfare should have a time limit. You should be given a limit of maybe 6 months to find a job and be able to support yourself. That would force those that are taking advantage to get off the couch and look for a J.O.B.

well, people like that take away from those who REALLY NEED the assistance. like i have gone through time where i couldn't feed my family what they wanted or needed. my children were eating peanut butter and jelly sandwitches almost everyday..mostly because we get the WIC foods. but still they said we couldn't get food stamps. its rediculous. i wouldn't be on it for YEARS like some people, we're a 1 income family with a lot of bills to pay. we make ends meet and live pay check to pay check. we would be on food stamps for maybe 2-3 months max...that would give us enough time to catch up and at least i know my children will be eating healthy. its heartbreaking seeing my children want something to eat and we can't get it...my youngest son loves meat..chicken, beef, even steak..he needs it, he's been anemic twice already because he couldn't eat...the most i can give him is hot dogs and sometimes chicken nugets...its just unfair...there are many families out there like me who just need assitance for a little bit. but some of the people on government aid...they just ride it for life...and those are our tax dollars.

I love how people are told they are over the income level for food stamps when they only exceed by a few dollars. This is sad.

A lot of people have nice things in life and still need help from the system.
It's hard to cheat the system these days.
Who cares if someone is on footstamps and also has a cell phone and a nice car.
That doesn't mean anything.
My neighbor works for the DHS Office here and they don't care what they drive or how they dress. It's all about their income.

It's a shame that there are people out there that really need it and have to struggle to get the assistance and then there are those who live off of welfare and abuse it like that. There has to be a better way to keep track of them and what they spend the money on.

I recieve a bit of welfare in lieu of child support. I have 2 children and we live in low income housing (but it is very nice here!! Not ghetto like some may think!) I do work all week long as a housekeeper to support nearly 75% of my income and needs. We get food stamps as well. And yes, I do smoke, but I earn my money to pay for the "extras."

This is one of those social injustices that make me very angry. I work with a girl who has a daughter, and the two of them live with the baby's father in the girl's father's house. The two parents are trying desperately to get their stuff together, and they are currently on welfare. It makes me sad to see how much welfare money gets wasted.
