Yeah I always wonder about things like that too. Something just doesn't seem to be adding up. You can either give them the benefit of the doubt that it was a gift, or assume they are crooked and misusing the system. Personally, I tend toward the latter! :-)

If I owned such luxuries I wouldn't even think to apply for help.

Yes, and it seems that the harder you try, the further you go back.

Doesn't it just make you mad!! I am on Medicaid for my handicap son, and I can't have anything or they will take it away from him. We do have other insurance, but they don't cover hardly anything and with about all his equipment costing anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000, I can't afford to not have it.

I could tell you some stories about people that would come in for equipment that would make you scream out of frustration!

It's called working the system and several people do it. Me and my in-laws had a discussion about this the other day. It's a terrible thing and I feel that benefits such as medicaid should be for those who are in dire need of it, not those he can work the system. Another thing - the FIA are really willing to help you if you have a child in the home, doesn't matter of your income and this is how I know: My husband and I made good living (at one time). He was working overtime and bringing home some good money. I was bringing home almost double what he made in a week. Then a turn of events - I lost my job and his hours got cut. We were no longer able to pay the bills and several times went without eating. After we were so far behind and got our electric and heat shut off (middle of winter) I decided to go get assistance from the Health Department (FIA) in our town. Well, due to the fact that they went back 6 months income and I had only been off work for two weeks and my husband's hours got cut three weeks prior we were over qualified by $1,000.00 and she told me to come back in a few weeks and see what they can do. Then she told me if I had a child in the household they would help pay my electric/gas bill to turn it back on. So, that's my story, and it's a sad thing, and it's bad enough I felt guilty for going in there asking for help because I know there are other people out there that need it more than I do, but, that's life, and I guess I'm just not one that's able to work the system.
I think there should be stricter rules for this type of behavior.

Hey Ash! Where have you been? Thanks for commenting on my discussion. It seems to be one that people are all aware of but, still there isn't much reform going on in the system. It definately needs to be revamped.

It makes me even more angry when I hear about this and know people that get turned down because they make a few too many dollars for assistance. But yet, each month they are making it by the skin of their teeth!
I wish there was a hotline one could call to report them in order to be investigated. It just doesn't seem far that she should drive a Hummer and others that do not get assistance has to Hoof it.

Back in the early 70's...lol...a lifetime ago, my husband lost his job. At that time I brought home about $110 a week. We had our 2 children at the time. We applied for food stamps and found out that I made too much money for a family of 4! Wow! Now, if you want to talk about health insurance! Boy! it is expensive. My husband has Blue Cross, Blue Shield through his work and it costs him $88 a week to cover both of us.

Her child has a disability, and she has managed to get benefits for him. She probably got a retroactive lump sum to get into the Hummer. Was it the best use of her money? No, probably not, but once you are getting settlements there is very little accountability for how it is spent. Just does not seem fair.

When I called the mother to let her know that her son's brace was in, her husband answered. They run their own business. I recognized the business name and know they do quite well for themselves.

yeah, I know what you are saying. I will drive the backway into town sometimes to avoid traffic and it goes right by a low income housing place, and I see all these new cars that are way nicer then mine, and I'm thinking what the heck, why are they living here if they have that kind of money. It does not seem fair. But as long as you are being honest that is all that you need to worry about it I guess. They will have their day if they are cheating the system.
