The term 'retail therapy' is used to describe a major shopping spree designed to alleviate stress or lift ones mood, erase theie problems from their thoughts. Do you think retail therapy is an effective solution to one's problems or is it merely blanketing the real issue, and a possible long term solution? Do you indulge in retail therapy when depressed, angry or sad? How much money do you normally blow? Do you feel better afterwards or worse- guilty about the amount of money you have wasted on things you didnt actually need?

Last wekk I broke up with my boyfriend and went shopping. I spent 50 bucks, which is a lot for me to spend :-/ It DID make me feel better though because I had nice new clothes :) BUT now I kind of regret spending THAT much money on a shirt and THAT much on pants :-/ Its a temporary pain killer.

I indulge in retail shopping for minor upsets. I'll go out and buy myself something I've had my eye on and haven't been able to convince myself to shell out the money for. Like once I lost a job so I went and bought myself a Bath and Body Works lotion set I'd been eyeing, just to cheer myself up. I don't think it works for major depressing things, but little things it can be a nice pick-me-up.

Yeah, great answer, I agree with you. I think it s a good way to get your mind off small dramas and relax for awhile but to try and use it to fix major upsets is silly in my opinion...

I engage in retail therapy sometimes, but, no, I don't think it's a good to relieve stress long term, just like smoking or drinking doesn't help you. It just makes you feel better for a few moments. In the long run, it might result in some choices you wish you hadn'y made like less monwy in your budget for things you need.

For me, the therapy comes with actually being in the shopping centre, window shopping and yet not buying anything. I used to shop alot and realised I ended up with junk I had to get rid of anyway at some stage, so now I allevaite the stress by just looking and not buying (unless I really need something).

Hi, I'm guilty of using retail therapy, I think you're right about them blanketing the real issues, but perhaps some people can't face those issues? I rarely feel guilty about the amount of money I spend as if I don't have any I don't go! I think the most I spent at one time was £300 or $600 us dollars, but that was all on my daughter and was money for her sent by her father and didn't feel guilty at all!

about 3 years ago my now fiances' and my relationship was in limbo. I had bought him a few nice shirts for fathers' day and he hadn't bothered to open the package. I asked him why he hadn't, and he didn't really reply. It was at the same instance I fond a break up letter in the trash form him. I was on my lch break as was he so I took it back to work with me and read it. He didn't feel right accepting the gift since he wanted time apart so I took the gift and returned it after a broken heart I exchanged it for a new outfit to go to a club and let loose and have fun. I have the outfit in my closet and he has no idea that it was what I bought in exchange for the gift I bought him

Sorry but I have never heard of such a thing. If I have heard of it I wouldn't trust it.

I never heard of this therapy before. But, it sounds good to me. If shopping makes one happy and less stress, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Nope, I totally Hate shopping, never have liked it and do not think it would resolve the real issue, in fact it might compound it. Especially if the issue were financial. I do not buy things unless I can afford it and need it.

Well, i don't think this can ever be a real solution. maybe something to make yourself feel better, but of course, it can't solve your problems. I do this myself, and it does cheer me up. I wouldn't recommend retail therapy to someone whose reason for being depressed is lack of money though...a friend of mine did this and, of course, ended up feeling guilty and even more depressed.

THis is why americans have bad credit. they get pissed off about somthing and then they go max out there credit cards. we need to find alternitive ways to relax instead of maxing the plastic.

is it an effective solutin? not at all. does it give you a temporary high that helps you to not think of said situation that led to the retail therapy in the first place? YES :D

I indulge in such shoping a lot.It really cheers me up- It need not be a silly thing but I do spend money on what I was meaning to buy and was just putting it off due to laziness.I usually buy clothes for my kids or just do grocery sohpping on those days just to keep things under control too..
