Crochet Hook Considered a Weapon

The good person that I am, I accompanied friends to court today. Waiting for hours was not my idea of a good day. I brought along my Christmas cards and my crocheting. The metal detector went off and the guard inspected my bag and told me that he knew that the crochet hook was harmless and if is was up to him I could bring it in. The problem is that "others" would term it a possible weapon. I had to leave the bag with him while I waited. Glad I brought the Christmas cards, at least I could get them done.

the only way a crochet hook could REALLY be used as a weapon is if somone tried to steal mine , then the person trying to steal it to do harm or maybe another project would be the one in trouble :) yea we crochet pplz like our hooks ;)

The thing is and even tho I know it is crazy a crochet hook can be easily jabbed into someones ribs or stomach and can cause damage. If someone really got pi$$ed off they could grab your hooks and seriously hurt someone. That is why the guard was covering hus but.

well actually as i stated in my original post to this topic those thread hooks are pretty lethal lol, it reminds me of thos one post to one of my many crochet list where this lady was was working on a thread project ( while her hubby was driving ) and they were in a car accedent and the hook went right thru her hand !! so even tho i used to take my crochet with me wether im working with thread or yarn at the time i dont any more , but geesh thand god she wasnt knitting eh ?

I agree. Though you probably had no intention of using it as a weapon, it would only take one person who's intent upon harming others to use it to jab into someone's eye.
Really sad that this is what our world has turned into!

It really does seem extreme on some of the things considered "weapons" now. Makes me wonder if we're becoming an uptight, paranoid society or if this is really all in the interest of safety? Personally I think we're erring on the side of paranoia. Then again, I'm a nice person and not out to hurt anyone or anything so I don't think that way?

That is silly, but I suppose they are really getting strict with things. You never know what people are up to these days.

Yes, I did get the cards done, but was late getting them out. I have been such a procrastinator this year.

It's not the guards fault, it's their policy. It's just as bad as when TSA/airport screeners were taking away little cuticle scissors and such. If you want to be technical, a pen or pencil could be a weapon. Anything could be used as a weapon, it just depends on how people think. Box cutters didn't use to be illegal to bring on flights. Sad day and age we're living in.

The guard and I had a good laugh when I came back for the bag. He said he wanted to help me out and work on the afghan, but was afraid it wouldn't have looked the same as my work.

Well, next time be sure to carry a plastic hook. You and I know that it could be just as deadly, but at least it will not set off a metal detector. What are you crocheting?I am glad you have a sense of humor about it, and you know that the guard was doing his job.

I was working on an afghan for my daughter. I did get it finished. We went north and it was a 3 1/2 hour drive both ways. I finished it on the way home.

Crocheting last night, as I sat at my husband's work, all I could think of was the joke about "they thought I might make an afghan", but I see other people shared that. And indeed, you were. Hope you had a Merry Christmas.

They should have sent you immediately to the jail for just showing them the crochet hook. Don't know why they let you without it, this thing is not considered illegal in my country. Good luck!

Trust me as someone who has been stabbed by a crochet hook, these can deffiantly be used as a weapon. About 15 years ago, the girl that I was seen at the time went crazy when I told her I was breaking up with her. She grabbed the first thing that she could find, her mothers crochet hook and stabbed it into my abdomin. Well long story short, after surgry to repair my lower intestines, all was fine, she was dumbed, and I never want to see a crochet hook again...
Okay, so none of the above is true... but would you want to be stabbed by one of those things?

A crochet hook might really be considered a deadly weapon. We can just imagine if a crochet hook penetrates the heart of a person, and that could be done. If you carry the crochet hook alone, it might be thought that it would be used for a crime. But if you do crochet, and bring with it the thread, etc, carrying it would be justified.
It depends upon the obtaining circumstances but a crochet hook is really deadly.

I had a little laugh at this one ElusiveButterfly but I am not surprised really because a few years ago we were at the airport to see our son off overseas. I had a very small manicure set in my handbag and it set off the alarms so I had a choice of handing it over or not being allowed through. When I say small that is what I mean as I only have it in case I chip a nail and so can file it off, but it was still considered a weapon. At least they did return it to you when you left the court, which did not happen to me. LOL
Thank goodness for Christmas Cards and a pen so at least you could do something rather than sitting around twiddling your thumbs. LOL
Yes, it might seem silly that the authorities consider it a weapon but there have to be rules for our own safety, and where do they draw a line? There is always the possibility that someone could use one as a weapon, so best to be safe than sorry. Perhaps next time take a plastic one so the metal detector does not go off. :)

Wow! I never would have thought that either about a crochet hook. Now...a knitting needle, sure! But crochet hook? LOL I know that must have sucked to not be able to do as you planned. Did you finish your Christmas cards then? Did you have enough to keep you busy? I really don't send out cards. So, it would have been a book for me. :)
Glad you had something to do while you waiting though. At least they didn't see a pen as a weapon!

yep happens all the time even at airports too , This sub comes up alot on the Crochet partners list alot and the best advice they can tell ya is to carry plastic ones or wood ones with ya when going to places like that and if your flying since it depends on airports you should also carry a pre adressed enelope to mail the hook back to yourself in case they wont let ya on ..... reminds me of the old robin williams joke .... what ya affraid im gonna make an afgan :P , tho i could see how some steel hooks could be thought of as that those can be pretty tiny Iknow the sz 14's are pretty lethal LOL so no thread projects on the road ;)

It is sad to think, but it is right, some would use that as a weapon. It is so sad though that in the world we live in today, a crochet hook is considered a weapon.
