I was doing the washing today and again I found 2 odd socks coming out of the wash when I put two pairs in. Where do the go?? I always put them in in pairs but somehow they escape between washing and going back to their drawers. I have an odd sock drawer where the sad lonley socks live and occasionaly a match will turn up but and they are reunited its a rare event. Is there a sock monster or are socks programmed to disintegrate in the wash so we have to buy more. Whats going on. Am I the only one this happens to??

he he he, this is so classic and IK actually have nom idea. My thought is that there is a monster in the washer who eats them, or atleast thats what my mom always said.
There os a great invention now though. little clips that u can pair them up with and it is supposed to garantee that they come out in pairs as well =)

This also happens to me. However I know the exact cause of my problem. My husband takes a pair of socks from the drawer, inspects them, decides not to wear them and chucks them back in the drawer. Sometimes both socks do not go back into the drawer, one will probably land on the floor. Later he will pick up the odd sock from the floor and fling it with his dirty socks into the wash basket. I never check to see if the socks match when I am loading them into the washing machine, as I do not want to be handling dirty socks unecessarily. At the end of the wash, if I cannot match the socks, I just dump the odd ones into the trash.

Hi
This is the Oldest Mystery in the World!!
Where do they go to?
They cannot go down the drain can they?
I have more socks in the washing machine than I can count!!
It just never fails to amaze me where they go!
Maybe someone should invent a little ball that you can put socks into, and then insert the ball in the machine!
That way they should come out in pairs!!
Ah!......... Maybe I have stumbled onto something?

I finally solved the mystery after buying tons of socks for my son. They actually get slung in behind the drum of the washer. I had a repairman come and change the belt and WALLAH there must have been a dozen unmatched socks back there! Also I purchased a net bag for $1.00 to put all my socks in.

I remember several years ago hearing Tom Boddett's theory about this very subject.
It seems he believes that there are patents for washers and dryers that don't eat socks, but that Sears and Montgomery Ward bought those patents so they could continue selling socks. Not trusting the ware factor to produce enough demand.
So some place hidden in a file are the patents which will never again see the light of day.
Meantime Walmart is doing a great business in sock bags for the washer!

My theory is that socks are the larval form of wire coat hangers.
I have never bought a wire coat hanger in my life. Yet every year I throw out or give away dozens of them.
I am *always* buying socks. Yet I can never find a matching pair.
Coincidence? I think not.

Ah, the mysterious and unwelcome sock monster. I wonder if he travels from wacher to washer to make all of us think we are insane.
Oh I have an odd sock drawer too, maybe we could compare our drawers and between the two of we might just find some matches.

Your washing machine has been invaded by the single sock monster, Once its in your machine it will be there for ever. I say it although it could be male or female but at the speed it breeds then it could be both. My monster is very hungry at the moment, but at odd times it must be full up because the missing socks sometimes turn up again usually in very strange places - under beds, or in wrong drawers, however these places are always searched as soon as the socks go missing and they are missing because they only go into the washing machine in pairs.
Its almost always the left sock that goes missing as well, seldom the right one.
In this digital age a photograph of the missing sock is posted up on the fridge door so that all the family can keep a look out for them. So much more fun than fridge magnets don't you think? although with so many missing I can no longer see the fridge for all thes 'Darn' socks.

It is so funny how this seems to happen to everyone that I know of!*laugh* I don't understand the phenomenon, either. It seems that rumors of the 'sock monster' may be true, lol!^_~ I think that it's sweet that you have a drawer especially for odd socks. Aw!^_^

Ive got the same sock monster in my washing machine. I constantly end up with odd sock that just does not have a mate. Remedy? Well I started do the washing more regularly to have more control over what goes in and what comes out. Its when I do the washing that has been building up for 2 weeks that I find most of the sock monsters appearing.

funny never heard of this before. but there is one thing may be its the same two socks and one of them has been exposed to a cloth whose colour was running. i dont think i can explain this but can give you an advice. try and soak your socks in a tub and hand wash them this way they will never get lost.

I actually know the answer to this one! Sometimes the socks fall behind the washing drum and end up going into the pump (especially if it is a big load). My dad has pulled quite a few apart over the years and found many miscellaneous socks in the hose and pump. So there you go... mystery solved hehe. I don't advise you to take the washer apart though unless you know what you are doing.
