Did you know that walking while drinking is just as bad as drinking and driving?

This has started to become a problem in my state not too long ago as there have been an increase in pedestrian casualties. It has been mentioned quite a bit lately and makes sense because if you are walking around drunk in a high traffic area you can lose your sense of direction. Is this true where you live? Has there been an increase in pedestrian deaths with getting hit by vehicles?

Well that certainly does make sense to me. But, as far as where I live, no. We just have such a low population, and are so far away from a city to have that kind of a problem.

But, forgot to add this, I could see a problem more arising, as they get on their horse drunk, and fall off.:)

I have not heard of anyone riding a horse drunk but you are right that they could fall off a horse and get hurt or ride the horse right into a building or some other object.

Very true comment indeed. I think a drunk pedestrian trying to cross a highway is a recipe for an accident. This is particularly true for South Africa. We have a lot of people that dont have cars and they sleep in informal settlements often next to a busy road, and there has been many hit-and-run accidents. The problem has kind of been solved by placing speed cameras all over the areas where informal settlements are right next to a busy highway!

In some places it can be worse than others, depending on where and when people are drinking and the location of the bars, clubs and homes in relation to busy streets and highways. I certainly would not want to be walking around drunk near a busy roadway. If I were to drink, I would drink at home and not leave my home. Of course, I could fall down the stairs. :-)

Bike - bicycle
We have a local neighborhood drunk that rides his bike because he has no license (DWI's). He actually ran into the side of a parked bus!!! I'm not sure about the walking part, but it's pretty certain that driving your bicycle can be dangerous too!!!!!

I now know that riding a bike is very bad while drinking too. That shows what drinking can do to a person whether they are walking, riding a bike or driving a car.

You are right man. Drinking while walking is as bad. I think that was why drinking along the street is boung here in the country where i live. I think you can guess where. If you are drunk and walking along the street, it's just as dangerous as driving while drunk. Drinking to stupour it the cause of many fatal accidents on the higways. Sometimes, someone drung can fall along the stree and die just like that. about two day ago, I saw one elderly man fell of his bike along the stree, i rushed there to help him up. As i was trying to pull him up, I mselt a very strong alchol from his breadth. I fell disgusted. Before, i could finished with him, I saw about to police men and the asked me to leave him alone. i gues they already know him in that neighbourhoog. hahaha. Please stay at home when you are drunk. don't start walking or riding along the street. it is as dangerous as driving while drunk.

Very good comments about how dangerous it can be to walk or ride a bike while drunk in addition to driving drunk. both are very dangerous either way.

People who drink and walk should just take a cab. I don't know people would get hammered like that! It just doesn't make sense.

I would think A pedestrian causing a ten car pile up while drunk would be harder than a drunk driving doing the same.Drunk walkers is not a big problem in my location, I think most of them get drunk, watch tv and sleep it off.

It actually is a problem and is the biggest cause of pedestrian deaths and accidents involving vehicles. It doesn't have to be a ten car pile up to cause an accident. I guess this could depend on where you live as well. Some places may have this problem and other areas may not have this problem.

I guess being drunk while walking is still considered public drunkenness. Being drunk in public is illegal where I am and I'm not sure about the pedestrian deaths while them being drunk.

I have never heard of this being an issue here, but it does make sense. Interesting thoughts here.

Someone that is drunk usually has a hard time walking so if they are near a busy roadway, they could possibly walk right into the middle of the road and not know what they are doing. It is something we have to think about, both as a driver and as a pedestrian.

This is not something that I have encountered before, or even thought of to be honest. It makes perfect sense that an inebriated pedestrian is just as likely to generate an accident as an inebriated driver, although the law seems not to take this into consideration very often. If a drunken person staggers into the road and is hit by a car then the driver is usually the first one to be questioned about the incident. I guess the law needs to be amended to reflect the true responsibilty.

You do not hear too much about a pedestrian causing an accident by being drunk and walking in a cars path but apparently it does happen more than we think. Drivers do get blamed for any accidents involving pedestrians but as you said the law should be changed to reflect the person responsible.

I didn't know that was possible. But, I can see why. Maybe some of them will try to cross the street without looking both ways and probably get hit or something. Thankfully, we don't have that problem around here.

I think walking while drinking and driving while drinking , both are equally dangerous as the fate in both the cases may end up in loosing your life.Walking while you are drunk in a heavy traffic area is always a risk in loosing your life , if not that then atleast you will get involved in some sort of casualties..you may fall in drain or get hurt with any objects ..

I agree. A walking drunk kicked my car in mid-traffic and had the audacity to curse at me. I called the police on my cell and he was arrested for disorderly menacing, but at what cost? Taxpayers money.

Ya i agree to this. But we cant help it. We cannot keep policemen checking around ppl walking that whether they r drunk or not. People should rather act responsibly themselves and think about the fact that hw much they are loved by their families

no i dont think so walking and driving are to diffrent things drung walk cannot kill a person but sure it will create inconvinience to others or kill himself but drunk driving can directly kill a person because we are responsible of the car drunk driving=100 drunk walking.

Certainly its not a good habit walking and drinking simultaneously. Its dangerous for not only the drunk but for the person who is driving the vehicle and come across the drunk accidently. To save the drunk or to minimize the accident chances, he or she may hit some other vehicle or persons.

I have never heard something like that. And I don't agree that drinking and walking is the same with drinking and driving. When you drive you can make more victimis then when you are driving.
