I love bringing my grandchildren out for a walk. We live in an area that is surrounded by trees. The kids love to collect stuff along the way. They will pick up pine cones, acorns, rocks and sticks. In the summertime we go berry picking. The older kids love to pick the berries more than the little ones. The little ones are more into eating the berries.
Having the kids pick up items and put them in a bag is great. They can make collages with them. With the older ones you can go on a venture to identify different plants. Have them try to identify the ones that can be eaten. It is an educational experience for them and a great way to spend time with the kids.

We do similar things a lot. When my grandson spends time with me he always ends up with something in his pocket.

Sometimes what ends up in their pockets can be a little scarey!

Introducing kids to nature is a great idea and being out in nature can only be good for anyone. Getting fresh air and walking and excersising is great for everyone who does it.

I live in the city, but at the end of my block we have some woods with a creek thru it. I take the grandkids down there, We have so much fun. I tell them we are hunting Lions and tigers and bears oh my, like they did on the Wizard of Oz. Its so much fun to explore with the kids.

They must have such a good time with you. I love to bring out the kids imagination. Imagination is something that kids are deprived of do to the onslaught of video games.

Its wonderful taking children out to show them the wild things, we are very lucky in Britain that its quite easy to get out into teh fields and woods, but even so I'm amazed at how many families seem almost afraid of being out of doors let alone getting nice and muddy.

Getting nice and muddy is one of the great things about being outside. Feeling the dirt in your hands enhances the senses.

I hope I have time like yours. I tried to spend my weekends with my son but turned out to be no-quality time with him. I think I will adopt yours. Thanks!

Get him involved in the planning. It may turn out to be an enjoyable time for you both.

Perhaps you can also start a laughter club with the children. After all laughter is the best medicine! This can be done stopping on the way for 5 minutes and laughing till you have tears in your eyes.Believe me it is fun and releieves you of a lot of tension.

It is nice that you do that with your grandchildren. It is always good to get kids outdoors in the fresh air. We used to take my son out all the time when he was younger. You are also teaching them something..and making them use thier hands and senses and creativity...good for you....

I love to take my children out on nature walks. It teaches them to stop and appreciate the plants and animals surronding them. But I have also found that it teaches them how others do not respect it. We have walked a nature trail where others used it as a party area and left their trash all over the place. I was pretty proud when they realized how sad it was because the trash effects the animals, water, and nature in general.
It is even more sad to see that the city we have moved to does not care about their nature park. Our now local nature park, was once the major supply of water to this little town. But the city left pipes all over that are no longer in use and we even found a tree growing around a pipe! Then on the end of the nature walk, there was a large metal water tank that is overgrown with vines and rusting. I can't believe the city does not care enough to clean it up!!!

Perhaps you could organize a committee that people could join and clean the trail up. Sometimes a committee can get the town to step up to the plate and do what is necessary to maintain the trail.

You lucky dawg you. I would love to have a blueberry field in my back yard. Blueberries are so rich in nutrients and high in anti-oxidents. I could eat gallons of them.

We live a nature walk. The boy is known for bringing in a snake and saying "look what I found!" We have had crawdads, baby bunnies, baby birds and the cats catch their share of mice and so we know how cruel out kitties are. The plants on the 43 acres we live on are diverse and the bouquets that sometimes make it into me are varied and beautiful. My daughter is learning herbs now at 14. Being homeschoolers we have lots of material we can use for the art projects and other things. If only all kids could have a relative in the country where they could spend some of their summers and live and learn nature!!!

City kids really miss out on a lot. Natures bounty isn't readily available to them. There is a program called Fresh Air Children. The kids come from the cities to spend time with a local family. It is a great experience for them.

that is true, i think parents are preoccupied with work, that they give almost anything their children would want, toys, and stuffs like computers, etc, but fail to spend some time with nature... just to "feel" the beauty with no cost at all.

When my kids were little we always ventured out into the fields and gathered plants and berries. It is a pleasure to carry on this tradition with my grandkids.

This is really a very good activity and the children will surely learn a lot from this nature walking.the child comes in actual contact with the nature, there bye actually seeing all the plants, rivers, some small animals and starts loving the nature in his own way.we must take our child out more frequently to increase his contact with the nature. This is very vital in view of recent attack of tv on our life making all our kids idiot box kids.

Many of the children in today's society do not get out into nature as much as the children from my day. There are too many electronic devices for them to play with now. There was a time when kids actually went out to play ball rather than play it on a screen.
