What is the most Under-Appreciated Job out there?

United States
December 28, 2006 4:14pm CST
There are many jobs in the world that simply do not get the respect that they deserve. Some would say that athletes get paid far too much, and that doctors deserve to make much more. Others would say that custodial work is extremely hard to do on a daily basis, and that it doesn't receive its due. What do you feel are some of the most under-appreciated jobs out there? Are there some where the workers deserve more respect?

Soldiers. They work 24/7 with very few wages and put their lives on the line to ensure our freedoms.

I agree. My brother in law is in the army, and he is underpaid, and way under respected.

I don't know if they are under-respected but definitely under-piad. I live in a military town and military people get lots of respect around here.

Thanks from this mum too. I'm sure my kids appreciate me but you're totally right, we work 24/7 and don't even get Christmas day off, no sick time or anything! I think sometimes people forget that, especially men!

Another great answer. Being a mother can sometimes be a very thankless job that is equally important to most others.

The direct care staff at nursing homes. They can make a resident's stay awful or much better and homelike. Bad employees are the pits, good ones you could not replace with a ton of gold. I think the job title is different in different states, I am thinking of certified nursing assistants, and certified medication aides.

This is an important job, and when they are doing their jobs, this is one of the most important ones out there.

i say, garbage collectors, their efforts not appreciated, they get to do the "dirty" job as i may say, but then they did not have enough salary to compensate their efforts.

My first thought is law enforcement. These guys work long shifts and risk thier lives for the general public every time they leave their home. Most people have a bad attitude towards cops without any valid reason. Firemen also are under appreciated. It seems like these occupations where people put their life on the line could pay a little better. Most of these guys have to work a second job to make ends meet, especially if they have a family.

Those are both very good answers for the question. Both professions are certainly deserving of much more than they are currently paid.

There are many that don't get their just deserves. I'd say just about any social service worker, teachers, daycare providers, and even substitute teachers.

I believe that a waiter/waitress job is the most underappreciated job out there because they are not even getting minimum wage they run their butts around serving us and refilling our drinks and their are so many people out their that i see that do not even tip them it does not matter how the food or service was they still served you so they should be tipped they count on tips these people do not even get minumum wage.and most of the time people yell at the waiter if the food is not cooked the right way its not the waiters fault its the cooks so i believe a waiter deserves a little more respect than they get from us.

I got the answer for you! First, doctors do not deserve to make more money, they make plenty! Ok, but Airport workers are very under-appreciated and I say this after watching that Airport reality show I see how under valued they are. People yell and scream at them for doing their job and following the airport rules, but these people who are complaining are doing things wrong... like getting drunk and then getting mad that they can't get on the plane. Or another episode I saw showed a lady furious her baby couldn't get on for free because she didn't have a birth certificate to prove he was under 16 months. No one reads the rules ahead of time when they buy their tickets, then everyone gets mad at the workers!! Final thought: my mom told me to say "a mother is the most unappreciated" So there you have it :)

Also, everyone keeps saying waitresses but I completely disagree. My waitress friends are always bragging about huge tips! And that's a job you could easily leave if you didn't like it. I appreciate a good waitress, but not a rude one.

I would have to say the garbage man is the most unappreciated job. They handle all of our trash and waste and risk themselves. All so we can have a clean home. They work every day except Christmas. They work in the rain and sleet and snow and in the burning hot weather too.

Definitely one of those jobs (like construction) that the weather does not let up for. Not something I would want to have to do in the snow storms we have been having up here.

I would have to say the military first and then food service workers -waiters and waitresses. The military makes less than minimum wage especially if you count that they are on call 24/7 365. They get some bennies but they are nothing near what they used to be. The exchanges prices are not as low as some retailers. The disrespect for them just doing their jobs is unreal. They are following orders. This war for example. the guys and gals over in iraq are not there by choice. They are following orders. But instead of going after their "boss" the general populous blames the brave men and women. I salute them. And they deserve a raise!!! Waitresses and waiters most people dont know get $2.13 per hour wages. So if the place they work is slow then they don't even get minimum wage. Then they have to deal with people who typically treat them like scum. Even if the waiter is pleasant he may not get a tip or the customer runs out on the meal and the server has to pay for it out of his/her wages and tips. Also, if there is a bar and hostess they have to tip out some of the money to them. when the bartender also gets tips. But they dont have to share. I always leave a tip. Even if service is bad I atleast leave enough to give them minimum wage. You try to serve hundreds in a days time anjavascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','') post responsed see if you dont think you are worth more than $2.13 per hour?

I have had several under-appreciated jobs in my life. I've been a teacher and parents have nearly cussed me out for me sugesting that their child read a book outside of the classroom. Not to mention the 80 hours a week that I would sometimes work, or the nights I spend hours trying to contact parents about what their child did or did not do that day in class. I've worked in bookstores where people would tear up the books and rearrange the bookshelves. I've worked in card stores where people would purposly put the cards in the wrong spots and mix up the envelopes for spite. In short, I think that all jobs are under-appreciated in some way. Just like the old saying "You never know a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes," you never know how hard a person's job is, no matter how much money they make, until you've tried it yourself.

Here are my top three underappreciated jobs (in no particular order): garbage collectors, mechanics, and soldiers. This is a great question, by the way.

Given that we trust our children to them every day and that they get paid paltry sums compared to others with the same level of intelligence and education, I'm going teacher. Mike

new york sports club employees! actually probably all TSI employees (phily sports club, ny sports club, boston sports club & washington sports club). you get paid minimum wage, the managers dont care what i great job you are doing, and take full advantage of you.
