NO INDOOR SMOKING LAWS becoming more common.

United States

I am a smoker living in Las Vegas Nevada. Clark County, Las Vegas is about to pass a law that states that you cannot smoke indoors. This is a law that is already set in LA, and New York, and probably many cities to come. Even though I smoke, I say that they should pass the law. Just because I want to pollute my lungs doesn't mean I have to pollute someone elses. And some people just don't appreciate the smell. What are your opinions.

I live in Ohio. Our recent election just voted for SmokeFree Ohio, stating that any enclosed public place is required to be smoke-free. Including a private home, if you conduct business there! No bars, private clubs or business can allow smoking, even if the owner wants to. My stance is to allow the business owner to decide for him/her self if they want to allow smoking. Its been well known for a while around here that Applebee's is a non-smoking restaurant. Non-smokers flock to it, and smokers who want to smoke during their meal or drink will go somewhere else. One of the biggest problems we're having, as the law is new, is how to enforce the law. The current law states that you cannot smoke within 20ft of the entrance to any public building. Unless there are cops at every door stopping people from lighting up, i just don't see how people can be stopped. Also, what is the proper punishment for a offender? Jailtime for taking a puff before walking into a WalMart? I believe this law is an infringement on personal rights. I don't understand how a gov't can dictate the whens, hows & whys with a person who is legally allowed to something.

This is right law passed by the government of your country. There must be ban on indoor smoking. You are free to spoil you lungs but you are no to hurt another person lungs. if he is getting risk of it by your smoking. you must have a control on yourself.

why did you post this discussion in the first place, if you wont accept the opinions of others? That's what you asked for right?

I am a smoker but my husband gave up smoking 7 years ago now. Oh dear it is dreadful that you cannot smoke in your home I know that we have it in our Government homes now where people cannot smoke in their homes, also we have it in hotels/clubs, but I do not believe that anyone has a right to stop us smoking in our homes. I do try to smoke outside when I can as my husband does not like the smell of cigerates anymore good on him I wish I could go cold turkey like he did!!

I agree. As a non smoker, I know that I would go out to bars and places like that more often if such a law was passed where I live.

i don't smoke, and though i have friends who do, i am against indoor smoking. Passive smokers are more in danger of getting diseases from smoking. So,your wrong when you say, just because you pollute your lungs that you don't have to pollute others. What about the smoke you blow when you smoke? Isn't that the pollution coming out from you?

Here in sweden we already have that law when it comes to bars, resturants and other public places. I am or actually I was a smoker and I thought the law was great. Not only did I not pollute others, but i also smoked less during this time. It is not illegal to smoke inside your own house/flat though (didn´t see if that´s what u ment as well)

I don't have a problem with not having smoking someplace but I think it should be up to the individual business owners. They should decide whether or not they want smoking going on or not. The government shouldn't. Why should the government get to say that no one can smoke here or there. Right now in Florida we have a law in place of no smoking in any business. This can include your home if you are running a business out of it or even if you have someone coming to work there. For example, you have your roof being redone, technically you are not to smoke during that time. That to me is wrong. My thought also is where will it end. If they start there what will be the next thing they go after. Not long after the bill here in Florida went through one lobbyist was on the news stating how next they would go after obesity and just being over weight. They answered a question about what medical references they will use. They stated, "Well you believed us about the smoking you'll believe whatever we put out." That scared me. Made me wonder what else they would think to make "illegal" to do and what legnths they would go to.

I wish they'd pass that law here in North Carolina. I don't appreciate second hand smoke...It's really nice to know that there are some smokers out there like you. Most around here don't care at all. They can see I'm in discomfort, it makes me where I can hardly breath.

I am a smoker and feel that it is right to ban smoking in public places, but I also feel that if they are going to do this they should allot a place also for the people who do smoke. I grew up in Oregon and I know that when they started banning smoking in public places they did put in ereas just for those that do smoke. When you go into one of there casinos you have non smoker rooms and smoking rooms, this seems to work well and I think that is how everyone should do it if they are going to try and keep all their businesses.

They made it illegal to smoke in a public place about 6 months ago. Although i am a smoker i think this has worked well when you go to a pub or club your eyes dont get burned with the smoke. Also if you are eating food and someone is smoking i do not appreciate that, it is bad manners. I thought at 1st i would not like it but it has worked really well.

Its statewide in Ohio. And I agree with you. Not only do people not want to smell it others are allergic to it. My husband is one. Makes it hard to go anywhere when people are smokeing in a building.

I really appreciate your views on banning of indoor smoking in spite of your being a smoker. This law is really needed keeping view the likely damage to the passive smokers present in that room.some of my friends who smoke are very much against this low due to their selfish nature only. but, great on your part to think like this.

They have just passed a law here in Baton Rouge, LA for no smoking in restuarants. I see this as a good thing because I don't like to sit in a smoke filled environment. It doesn't make your meal very enjoyable. Even with smoking and non-smoking sections the air drifts to the whole place. I like the new law. Just because someone wants to smoke doesn't mean everyone else should suffer.
