I know this might sound stupid but it works, i think by root conal you mean you have a hole in your tooth and you need it filled. I used to have alot of problems like this firstly get a candle and let it burn for a few minutes then take the burned of bits of wax and place it in the tooth. One's it dry's in the tooth will be filled this will stay in place for about 2 days before falling out but trust me it works.
I hope this helps also if you dont want to do that let a pain killer desolve on the tooth this gets it right into the root and takes the pain away.

That sounds like a great idea. I will try it. But, It is not a cavity or a filling. My root is dying, and it is very painful. After the doctor fixes it, then I need a cap.
So, melt wax and just form it around the tooth? Or take a pill and melt it on the tooth?
Is your girlfriend there yet?
Thanks for your help.

We have 9 hours to go. I'm glad that you are with your grandparents, and not alone. I hope I did not offend you with the drinking. I'm sorry if I did. But, I used to drink, and I know all the bad things it can do. Well, you will be soon having a new year. I can only wish you the very best, and lots of happiness and a better year ahead my friend.

As the one person suggested clove juice is the best thing to use. It is what the dentist will use if you get a dry socket, they pack it with little bits of clothe soaked in clove juice.
If you can't find that or it doesn't work my brother swears by oil of peppermint. It can help with the pain by just dabbing some around the tooth.
Now since you are getting a root canal and you are losing the root anyways something that does work is taking an asprin and putting it right next to the tooth. Let it melt there. Yes it will taste nasty but it will get rid of the pain. However use it too often and it can kill the root.
Good luck. I hope the root canal works for you. I've known many who have gotten it done only to lose the tooth in a couple of years anyways. Seems a shame to go through all that pain, not to mention money, only to end up having it pulled.

I had the same sort of pain about two weeks ago into my jaw and fnally got to the dentist. It was an abcess under tooth. The dentist recommended it be pulled or root canal but with $200 to pull or $900+ to have root canal, (and a son who has just had braces put on) I opted for the extraction. I still needed antibiotics as the abcess was infected but it is heaps better now.
About your tooth ache(sorry I got off the track but I am really sympathising with you at the moment) the oil of cloves or an anaesthetic gel (like SM33 or teething gel) directily on the gum works for a little while. I liked the sound of the wax though. You can get tooth wax from pharmacies or dentists here. It would have the same effect and be easier than melting a candle.
Hope it eases off a bit before you get the dental treatment.....

Thanks for asking dear. I had the root cannal right after I posted this within a day. The jaw is hurting, along with the ear still. Don't understand why, nor did the dentist when I went back to tell him. I appreciate your concern. I had to go page after page to find this post of yours. I wish MyLot would make an easier way to continue discussions, don't you? Thanks again dear.

I had an abcess a couple months ago, and paid the $150.00. Had no choice. Now this is a different one. It needs root canal for $1000. plus the catp for another $900. I don't have ins. I don't know how we will do this. Until then, I just need something to numb this pain. It's in my jaw and ear. Thank you for your advise. Everything is closed today, will have to wait until tomorrow. Giving you another + for this and also a best response my friend. Thank you.

I can understand how much pain you are experiencing with your tooth pain. The most hurtful of all pain - next to none fracture - is tooth pain, I guess. I remember I knew the solution for this years ago without visiting dentist. If I remember correctly, take a clove, and place it on the tooth where it's paining. The clove will soothe you and relieve you from the pain. On the top of that, make sure you brush your teeth before going to bed and after you take your breakfast. The most ugly part of any personality is when I see extensive thick yellow coating and worst to smell the bad odor from the people who ignorantly are careless about their teeth and leaves unbrused. Please avoid this carelessness and be more responsible to take care of your teeth and general health so that you can minimise your trip to clinic and subsquently reduce your incoming bills.

Here's a couple of home remedies you can use for the pain, Hope these help you hun.
Take a clove of garlic and a little bit of rock salt and place it over the area that it hurts. It will releave the pain shortly, and sometimes can even cure your ailment, though i wouldn't recomend canceling your apointment, as it might come back later in time.
you can also apply clove oil to the painful area about once every couple of hours and it will releave the pain. Chewing Cloves straight also works very well.
Mix one teaspoon of salt with half a cup of warm/hot water and swish it around in your mouth several times a day can also help, though is not as beneficial.
Chewing a piece of ginger for about half an hour and it will also numb the pain.
Also, something that works amazing, is if you boil 5 grams of peperment and a pinch of salt in one cup of water, and then drink it (Like tea) it releaves so many pains it's unbeleavable, It'll help that tooth and a lot more. Using 2 or more of these treatments would maximise the pain releaving, as well as do your mouth and body help by giving it vital nutrients.
Take care, and may peace and love be with you and all those in your life.
Blessed be.

You can try over the counter products already listed by other threads..they all work but are very temporary. What I wanted to add was if you see it begin to get red and swell or you see it oozing..it's getting infected and this will add to the pain. If it were me, I would call the dentist that you have the appointment with and ask for an antibiotic to kill the infection and if possible and prescription pain killer until you have the root conal done. However the infection possibilty is the one you should be most concerned with.

I hope your dentist put you on antibiotics to kill the infection. This will help the pain some. But clove oil is a good suggestion. Also you might try Orajel (maybe spelled Oragel). It has some numbing qualities. You can find this in most pharmacies. I don't recommend the whiskey suggestion. When I tried this, it only irritated my mouth worse.
I've had a couple of root canals, and contrary to popular belief, they really aren't that bad or painful.

I used to have toothaches a lot. Here in Portugal a lot of people use a clove and garlic and rub in on and around the tooth. They say that it works. I have never tried it because my teeth are porcelain. But when I have oral problems I use ANBESOL...it is anteseptic and anesthetic. It was kill the pain instantly, much like novacaine and it will heal any infection. It is available in the US and I have found it in Gibralter and England. Whether it is available anywhere else I cannot say.

Oh do I sympathize :) I knew I needed a root canal, my face swelled up on the right side by my nose, hurt so bad I was in tears. Went to a scammer dentist that wouldn't do anything until I signed a contract saying I'd have him do the work(& pay up front of course). I had to wait a month for insurance though. Friend recommended this great dentist, gave me some pain killers, an antibiotic, and an appointment the day my insurance kicked in. See if you can get some antibiotics, they will help you, if it's infected-probably is and that's what's causing the pain. Also, try calling the dentist's office and tell them about the pain and such, they should be able to either give you something unitl the appt. or move it up as an emergency! Good luck and hope you feel better!!

Margie,
In the past I've had problems with my teeth, and once had to have a root canal done! But, I was in luck in that I had a regular check up booked not long after my tooth played up, so got it sorted quickly!
However, it was not long after this, that I came across a product called Eliminator Mouthwash, from a company called NEWAYS International! And since using this{and electric toothbrush, plus dental floss], I've had Absolutely no dental work required,[beyond some general cleaning . . . and not much of that]! Oh, I started using it about 1994, which gives you some idea of just how good it is! Believe me, I can personally recommend this product!
But, it is a bit cold, so might not suit you until having that tooth dealt with . . . But, perhaps you could warm it up slightly?
You can find NEWAYS via most any Search Engine! By the by, they also do a Great range of health related products ! Some of which I've used in the past to good result . . . Such as getting rid of Heartburn / Acid reflux ! Check them out while on site !
Kind regards,
Danny, Mousehunter

Just noticed this date of this post, hopefully you have had your appointment. My husband has a lot of dental work last year, he hates the dentist & medication. He would chew.. (yuck) cloves. or place one in the whole of the tooth.. But then clove oil as mentioned would be easier.. good luck

I have been through this and I know how horrible it is. Right now I have a broken root canal and a broken tooth!! Here are a few suggestions that came from my dental clinic....Oralgel may help on the nerve for awhile but do not use to much as it can cause other health problems....I normally would rinse either with warm salt water or hydrogen peroxide..take some ibuprofen or tylenol....then get a warm rag and lay down place the rag on the outside (on your cheek whatever is closest to the pain) sometimes the rag does not seem to get hot enough in that case I placed a wet rag in a ziplock bag microwaved it for a few seconds then wrapped in a dish towel then would lay my head right on it....

is the tooth infected at all? sometimes salt water rinses will help with the pain, and it helps draw out any infection. since it's hurting your ear it sounds like its infected....if you can't handle heat in your mouth, what about against your ear, jaw, and neck? that can help relax the muscles which can provide a little relief. also go with some of the other suggestions I've seen for orajel or anbesol, both work very well, and so does the clove oil. one other thing...if you're being made to wait a month, call your dentist back and ask them to prescribe you something for the pain, chances are they may also move your appointment up.

There are two things I would suggest. If you chew whole cloves on it, it will numb it (though it tastes horrible). Also, at many stores they sell a temporary filling kit that you can use at home. Asides from that, you may need to check with your dentist to make sure it's not infected. If it is you will most likely need an antibiotic. Not to scare you, but I had one that almost killed me.

I don't think you can do anything yourself to reduce the pain rathet to go for Pain-killers.
But instead of that Medical treatment is the most urgent recommendation you will need.So it is better not to waste your time in getting responses rather to go a good dentist and recieve a treatment
Tooth-ache is the most awkard pain you go through ..any pain can be taken care of but tooth never,It is always recommend dont to play with your teeth,it can be quiet nasty if it gets out of proportion..

Gargle with warm salt water and see if that helps, also if you have any antibotics in the house, perhaps left over from a cold or another infection, take them, they say they are not good after a certain time but if that is all you have I would highly recommending taking some to see if you can get rid of the infection, since dentist won't do the work if you have an infection where the root canal is, which is sounds like from the hot/cold pain .. good luck

OUCH! Sorry you are in so much pain- A tooth ache is the worst!! I am going through the absolute same thing right now only I can't afford to get to a dentist anytime soon.
I tried everything, anything someone suggested I tried. Finally my dad told me to take 4 Ibprofen which equals 800mg which is prescription strength and it works like a charm. And it takes about 20 min for the pain to disapear.
Once I start to feel the pain come back, I will take 1 or 2 more. It helps soo much!

Forgot to add that you should be very careful while applying clove oil. If it gets on to any other part of your mouth then you will have a burning sensation. So be very careful.
