In my family my dad did most of the cooking. My mom cooks a few things that are really good but she is alot more limited then my dad who could cook anything. I also learned alot from my grandmother and my friends grandmothers when I lived in New York. So did someone teach you or are you self taught? I am a little bit of all of the above..

Yes - my love of food and enthusiasm for cooking came about mainly because my mother couldn't cook, and mainly used to do ready-made food (badly) and cook those dishes she thought she could in such a way as to be almost inedible to me! So I used to read cookbooks, watch cooking programmes, and was always pestering to be allowed to bake and cook. My Dad could cook about three things, but did them very well, so I used to enjoy those rare occasions when he made dinner as well.

I have housekeepers who do all of that for me. They are all indian because we got them at a cheap rate. This means all of the food I eat is delicious since it is always indian women cooking for me which is delicious. Once my dad even let one of them leave the house to buy ingredients, and that was the best meal they have ever met. Now my dad lets them go out at least 1 time a week for shopping.

My grandmother tried desperately, lol. she made awesome powder milk biscuits so she thought she'd try to teach me how to make those first, as they were my favourites.Well, this most lovong, most patient woman in the world, ended up telling me to marry someone who owned a restaurant so i wouldnt starve, that's just about how well it went.I also remember us both being covered in flour. Lawdy,LOL.

As a boy, I was never expected to have to cook for myself, so I was never taught to cook before I left home. After that, I taught myself with a few tips from my mother who was a cook in sevice before the Second World War. At the end of her life, after she became incapable through age of cooking for herself, I did all of the cooking for her and myself of course. A turn of events that I'm sure my mother could never have imagined coming about. But that's life.

as a child i really wasnt interested in cooking which meant i didnt really pay much attention to either of my parents who both shared the cooking between them. This meant however that when i moved out into my own place i couldnt cook anything much except eggs on toast. So in answer to your question i suppose i am self taught as i have had to learn through trial and error, and sometimes the odd phone call to the parents to ask how to cook something complex. I imagine that i will nerver be an amazing cook, but what we eat is certainly edible and nutricious. Tanika.

sad to admit, i don't know how to cook. but i do know a thing or two about it. i can make scrambled eggs, fry, cook rice. but that's it. my sister is a better cook than i am. i wish i could learn someday. my mom usually cooks around here. she's really good at it. but i think my dad is a better cook. he knows more about cooking than my mom.

I am half Puerto Rican, so majority of my lessons came from my mother. She is an amazing cook and I hope someday I will be like her if not better. I learned mostly from watching her, because when it came to her kitchen, she wanted things her way. So as a young girl I just patiently watched as she added this and that to each pot and eventually I was able to help out. My step dad has taught me a thing or two as well. He is self taught so his style of cooking is quite unique for he is able to cook anything out of anything. So I guess that's where I get my "let's try this" attitude for new dishes. Both of my parents helped me understand the need of each ingredient and the proper way of adding them to the recipe (something that I never thought was that important, but I found out later on that it does make a difference!) Thanks for the post.

Wow sounds great and thank you for posting and sharing your experiences knowing what to add here and there does have an importance once you know what a certain spice or ingredient adds and I cook alot of "let's try this" myself...

If I talk about from whom I learnt cooking, then I would say my dad. Its not so that my dad used to do most of the cooking. It was my mom only who used to do cooking but when it comes to teach how to cook my mom had no patience. And I learnt cooking from my dad. I also learned from my mother-in-law as she is a very good cook and made me feel more comfortable in cooking. Now I feel even more confident while serving food to anyone especially non-vegetarian as everyone says that I cook non-veg very good. Thank you so much everyone for making me a good cook.

my mom taught me how to cook. she cooks very well. she also taught me how to bake.
at first, all i can do is watch her as she mixed all the ingredients but as i grow
up she let me helped her until I finally knew how to cook. She let me cook whenever there's special gathering. Then my friends will ask me, "Who taught you to cook?". I'm always proud to say: Thanks to my ever wonderful mom.

My grandparents raised us, so my grandmother taught me to cook, and do laundry, and do dishes, and to take care of the younger kids. So, really, she helped me to be a better parent as well as taught me to cook....;) Happy new year!
