For you- Is prayer the same as meditation or is there a difference?

I do both. I pray to God everyday and I also meditate. I pray to speak to God but I meditate in order to better "hear" what he wishes of me for my life. Afterall, meditating is simply clearing of the mind and allowing it to be opened for those that have passed to bring messages to us. I believe that they are two seperate things but still used to achieve the same effect.

Prayer n meditation both requires u to concentrate ur mind..
wen u pray u think of God...but wen u meditate u r free to choose any stuff to concentrate ur mind on..u need not think at all..
wen i meditate i think of my aims n ambitions...

I think they are different because in meditation you meditate and look inside your self and focus on your innerselves clearing aways all your thoughts and reashing out to touch your own soul. While in Prayer you reach out to a God or a symbol out of you and it may be a request or a confession to the one who is beyond the reach and understanding of all of us. So in one you look with in and in the other you look out of yourself.

These are two different things. While prayer is your discussion with what we call as an embodiment of God, meditation is to bring all the concentration to focus at one point and let is be in your control.

Prayer and Meditation are completely different. Prayer is when you: ask God's help before taking tests
implore God's saving grace when you're in danger
aks God for a miracle to happen if your loved one is in critical condition
thank God for the new house or car you got
ask god to help your friend who is in trouble
etc, etc
Meditation on the other hand requires more concentration and reflection. You want to do something but you're not sure if you're making a right decision so you meditate on it and ask God's guidance.
Or you are reading the Bible and you get touched by a specific verse so you reflect on it and try to live up to it. Though in meditation you pray sometimes as a comclusion to your meditation.

I think that prayer and meditation are different. Prayer is when you send your thoughts out to a higher power or God, whereas meditation is an internal process where you focus your attention within.

Prayer to me is praise, talking to God, thanking Him, sometimes asking for help. Prayer is every day, many times a day. Meditating would be pondering a Bible passage or thinking about it while putting yourself in a "listening" attitude to see what might come to you in the form of revelation. Meditation is not as often and is usually a special time set apart just for that purpose.

We talk to God through prayers. In prayer, we thank God, praise Him, request Him for whatever we want. We may pray alone or in group anywhere, anyhow. Prayer is one of the five ways to worship God.
In meditation, we do that alone in a quiet place where we think of God, His words, and everything about God. We may pray in our meditation. This is for Christians. I don't know what members of other religious groups do in their meditation.

Meditation and prayer are kindof similiar..but to me, meditation is sitting or standing or whatever, having your mind clear and not cluttered, thinking about a particular problem or just plain old of your day. Or nothing at all. It's relaxing and helps build up your concentration a bit. I do it to help me relax after a particularly stressful day, or when I feel like doing it. Prayer is simply talking to whatever diety you believe in, which for me is the Goddess.

For me the two are totally different. I call prayer aspiration. When I meditate I go into a state of stillness and all going well the mind quietens and creates a sense of peace.
When I aspire I am in a state of stillness and turn myself toward divine principles. It's like letting presences see me and I ask for their help. It's not even a verbal asking. In the process of being seen which is beautiful I am putting myself in the hands of something greater than myself which has the wisdom to know what I need. It makes me feel like a beautiful person when I am being seen.
Meditation is a no state (if you can get there!) you just BE. Aspiration or prayer is a receiving state. Devotion is a giving state.

well here goes to opposite viewpoint.
I do not pray to god. I do not meditate.
I center myself and I speak with my higher self which is a part of the greater conciousness. By this I recieve MY truth. I do not subscribe to any religion as none fit me and my beleifs.
Meditation should not be seperated from prayer. By meditating one is in contact with one's self and with god. All the answers that we seek are available to us at any moment in this existence. By seperating ourselves from god, we are forcing ourselves into a subserviant state. We are to be one with god and all of god's creations. Aren't we all created equall? if we are created in god's image then we are an equal with god.
just my POV

i think they are different. meditation is more of concentration while praying is more of talking and letting it out. i was once told by my prof in philo that praying is like talking to a wall. you just have to let it out. but meditation is more of gaining the power of concentration. pretty deep for me though.
