Painting a Wall

Do you choose one color when painting a wall? I prefer using one color and adding a border that is color specific to the furniture of the room.
My husband once painted a room using orange on one wall and blue on the other. That is a bit modern for my tastes. I prefer muted colors. I have tried to compromise with him by having him paint the room in two shades. First paint the lower half of the wall in a darker shade and use a lighter shade for the upper part. Add a border across the dividing line and you have a beautiful wall.

My choices seem to be colrfully neutral, if there is such a thing. I have two rooms painted a very light peach, and almost any color is complementary. I like buttery yellow ( not sunshine yellow) Lately I am having this craving for celery green. The prettiest painted room I have seen lately is my brother and sister in law'w dining room, kitchen combination. Dining room is "crushed melon" slightly muted but the color of cantalope, kitchen is "rosebud". Colors are of the same intensity, just enough different that you think it might be an optical illusion. They got lineoleum tiles just slightly browner than terracotta pots. Their theme is southwestern. It looks wonderful.

If I could paint this bucket I'd use a light tan type of color, that way I can buy any kind of color accessory but I always prefer white in kitchens and bathrooms.

Like you, I tend to prefer one wall color in a room and I am drawn to neutrals and muted tones. I'm perfectly willing to experiment with colors, though, especially in places like the kids' rooms... but I don't think I could go so far as orange and blue, to be honest lol But then again, who knows... it might go with an overall theme of some sort so I'd keep an open mind :)
I also have a "thing" about stark white ceilings. When I had my basement renovated last year, the contractor kept telling me how we *had* to have white ceilings. I finally got fed up and said, "Look... here's the thing. I don't like the stark white and I've already chosen a nice cream shade that I like better. All the ceilings, as well as some of the trim work will be cream, NOT white." He looked at me like I was from another planet, over something so simple LOL

ha ha That's great! The contractor had it coming because he is supposed to do what you PAY him to do. Not what HE thinks is better. LOL Good for you standing up to the contractor!

As a house painter for 11 years I cannot believe that he tried to make you paint the ceilings white. I have painted some rooms that the color made me ill but it wasn't my house so.... As for my home I prefer soft pastels or like my living room is burgandy across the bottom and baby blue on top with a 6" Thomas Kinkade border in the middle. There's a white chair rail encasing the border and the rest of the trim is bright white. It really makes the colors stand out.

I would paint the wall one solid color and then I want to sponge over that solid color with a slightly lighter color. to give it a marbled look.
Orange and blue for different walls is a little bit much for me.

I wanted a marble effect wall, but that hasn't happened yet.

At least your husband is not afraid of color! My partner is so scared of color that trying to squeeze him to add a splash of color is like trying to squeeze the last bit out of the toothpaste tube!
I love purple! And I didn't want a royal type of purple for the walls, but he didn't want any purple. He wanted white. WHITE!!! Yuck! Seven kids in a house filled with white walls...not a good combo! So I pressured him until he gave in just a little. Now, the walls are a Hostas flower purple...that is, so light a shade of purple that one would swear it is white! Grrrrr
I think I am going to go insane with the white walls. But hey! At least it will create the white walls of a asylum for me! hahahahaha

I lived in an apartment complex that would only allow white walls. I advised them that if they wanted white they would have to come paint them once a month. Kids have a way with white walls that get a unique pattern when little hands and fingers smudge them all day and apply pencil and crayon and chalk marks.

we all want the colours we use in our homes to create a memorable impact, but assessing the right colours and colour combination for each part of a living space can be challenging task, first impressions are crucial, if you devote your time and effort to planning the decoration of the front door, the hallway , the rooms or the walls leading off it, you will be pleasurably ushered to your home each time you return and your living space will have a positive effect on visitors., making a good pairs, if you are in any doubt about how to combine colours, you can refer to the colour wheel/chart to determine which colours is the best that will go together and appropriate in different rooms. i like Green, this is the color of our wall, it is a colours of relaxation , green for me is restful on the eye, it promotes healing also, colour is a theraphy , it can be used to safeguard and improve our health.

Having recently built our home and painting it ourselves we have chosen a light coffee colour for the walls and a white ceiling and it looks great. One bedroom was painted to the choice of my daughter which main wall is rich burgundy and other 3 brushed gold.

I think it depends on which room it is. If it is a smaller room, like the bathroom, I would only use one color for the walls. I would be afraid that with it being such a small area, it would look 'too busy' in there. On the other hand, in both my daughters rooms, they have 2 colors. For my oldest, she has 2 opposite walls painted pink and the other 2 painted pink. For my younges, she has 2 opposite walls painted aqua and the other 2 painted peach.

yeah...i do the same too...but it depends to the concept of the decoration. at the main living room, i paint just exactly what you have described above, one color plus border to the color of the furniture. then at the second living room which is the media room, then i painted them with green color to increase the mood so do to dining room where i painted it bright red.i think that is so nice.Plus you try to add some woode accessories from indonesia.

This is so funny. As I'm reading and responding to this, my husband is busy putting up a border just like this in our bathroom. We had it the same way, but with a different border, in our old house, and we loved it. The bottom half is slate blue, and the top is a very light shade of the same color. The border I chose this time wasn't anything like what we had before, but I like it. It incorporates the blue shades with burgunday, and I plan to add a burgundy shower curtain. The piece he has up now looks beautiful. I saw the idea in a restaurant once, and you're right, it makes a beautiful wall!

I prefer white walls, a pretty border, and maybe some design! I actually prefer no border if you have a nice design.
I like to think I'm creative but I've been too scared to go past "white" on my walls yet. One room in my new house, we painted the ceiling dark green (b/c it was an ugly light green) and I like it but never would have done it otherwise.
If he wants two shades, try to sponge paint! You use a few colors and see them both, but it looks nice. Here's a link: http://interiordec.about.com/cs/painting/ht/ht_spongepaint.htm
It's something I always wanted to do, and now that I finally have my own house - I may start a new painting project this summer :) You can use muted colors too, they don't have to be bright red! Maybe a light blue base with white on top would look nice. Enjoy!
