Indians smell bad?!

Is it true that Indians smell awful? I'm not heating an argument here but I've read that most Indians smells really bad. They say it has something to do with what they eat. In the university I attended, I had an Indian schoolmate, I got close to him and I also smelled something, smells like, a fridge opened after a week long vacation with onions inside, can't stand the smell. But I think that is not everyday though I wasn't able to get that close again. He's not the only Indian I smelled like that, on the train also. I am not saying that all Indians are like that ok, but why most of them? and the impression is not really good. Why is it like that? What are the foods they eat that makes the smell or is it really the food? anybod knows? Do you have same experience?

hey dont you think you americans even smell worse??you people dont even take bath for 7-8 days.and constantly apply deodrant to hide your odour?we indians whether we eat or not take bath everyday atleast,we may be poor to buy soaps but we bath even in simple water.what about you people who even worse than us like canned beef, chicken preserved for months but we eat everything fresh.so mister just check out your underarm for yourself whether you are smelling bad or not before making such statement.every labour let him be indian or african will smell bad after heavy work.and in trains?dont you know we dont have bath in trains?and india is not uk that we can cover the country in 5 hours...so its you people of cold countries smell bad who dont even change or wash clothes for weeks together.if you still have doubt if you smell bad then ill put your head under your hips for you to know it for yourself.

I never expected that they would be this affected, I mean I was just actually asking. Sorry sndcain for they thought that I am an American, I think it's clear and obvious on my avatar that I am not. And if they have read my comments on the earlier responses, they would know what I think of now. They're all pissed by this discussion, I didn't mean to. Huh!

When I was younger I couldnt tolerate dealing with Indian people because their body odour was so difficult to handle. I thought it was because they didnt believe in bathing and therefore considered them unclean. I learned later when I developed some Indian friends that they actually bathe several times per day but the spicy food they eat such as curry comes out of their pores and causes them to emit an odour which is stronger than american made anti-perspirant can handle. My wife is of Indian decent. She and her family dont smell at all. It was just my foolish stereotyping.

i think from a western european perspective Indians smell of their food, no doubt so do i to them. In Japan Americans and Europeans smell of slightly sour milk, i guess its just getting used to each other

What you have experienced is always the case, the fridge smells whenever it is opened after 7-8 days be it in India or any where in this world. Indian trains will smell a bit because people cannot take a bath in train. But INDIANS are vrey particular about their hygiene, they keep themselves clean and eat good healthy food...One bad experience cannot mean all are smelling foul.

sorry I never faced any such problem.Every race of people have some sorts of smell in their body. Some are heriditary and some may be due to unhygienic condition where they live and steps they follow. Some use deodarant to suppress their body smell where as some doesn't mind that.

yes i think so. its just that people who have been living in a particular place for a long time doesn't notice it. im a filipino, and some foreigners said that we have a salty smell. dont know if its because of the food we eat. ive smelled myself and i must say i smell fine!

I dont know if this is true. But I do think any race would smell awful if they don't have proper hygiene, despite the color, race or status in life.

You can definatly notice a different smell around Indian foods, markets, or people. I would agree that I have observed teh same thing.

Then I would have to say you have not been around other foreigners. Everybody's "nose" works differently. I can say that those that work and sweat will smell. anyone that does this. But I do not agree that it is the food. However, maybe in your opinion you don't like the smell of the Indian food. i don't care for other types of foods (I love Inidan food though & the smell of it!), some of the other foods that have a particulr odor, I don't care for. That's just the way life is.

Wow! Quite a broad statement! I am foreigner who has just started to live in India and I would have to say that the majority of Indians I have come across (and that would mean thousands as I have caught trains, taxis, been to movies etc)do NOT smell awful! Yes there are some that do but I think that has to do with personal hygiene and/or inability to gain access to the proper facilities to ensure hygiene than anything else. I will say though, some Indian foods that I have eaten do cause me to have a slight odour about me! But again, this is not as a majority. I have had the occasional taxi driver too that has smelt pretty bad! But I have also experienced this in other countries as well..... I think that it all comes down to the individual's personal habits as stated above. Do all Americans smell like McDonalds?

I visited India many times. They are very strong, hard working and have lot of respects for their elders.India is the largest democracy in the world and people from differnt ethnicity and religions living in India peacefully.Their roots are very strong.Regarding Indian food I think it is very healthy and tasty.I love it..

EVERY Indian I've ever encountered smells! I don't think it's from their food, the smell I'm catching comes from the lack of deodorant. This doesn't make them bad people... they just have different personal hygeine ideas. I will agree these are some of the most intelligent people I've ever encountered however.

I am not sure where you are encountering those from India that seem to "smell" according to you but I am married to an Indian, been to India & lived in India. I have been around a lot of Indians the past 15 years. Those that "smell" are thos that I feel have not bathed for whatever reason. There are people all over the world that "smell". Why is everyone here so stuck on what they "smell" like? Lets talk about everyone. So those of you out that that have sweat, are you telling me you don't "smell"? Yeah right. You people need to get a life & so does the person that started this in the first place. I am bleeping mad. This is an insult on my fellow Indians. Get a life.

hello hello if u are from the different country that doesnt mean that you insult some other country.. Its better you listen the matter first.. U know that indian is little poor so most of the people living in India live in villages and are poor that is why Those poor people stink.. and we the people who live in cities.. who have many cars dont stink like they do.. So its better u dont insult any other country like that..

Sorry if this seemed to be insulting but believe it or not I am not. "It's better you listen the matter first", this statement of yours is what I am doing. If everybody will just read my comments on the earlier responses, then you guys would not be this mad or angry, I can say. And I never said that "ALL Indians smell bad". One more thing I do not even discriminate poor people, coz it is acceptable that they might have "that" odour due to hard day's work. Thanks for a well-thought response.

Hey just because you felt two indians who smelled bad then with that you judge the whole of India, As an Indian I take offence to this stupid opinion of yours, and you dont stop there you cintinue to comment on the food they eat, please tell me, or let me tell you you must be really stupid if you think that the food we eat can cause a smell or fragrance then no one will buy perfumes they will just eat a food that gives a good smell, Anyway dont you repeat this mistake again of commenting on my fellow indians

My adopted sister is full Indian and she doesn't smell. And I never noticed any other Indian race smelling bad. Only people I have ever noticed to smell bad was people that have not taken a bath and that is not just one race in general. Many different people of all kinds of race can smell if they don't take baths. Not just Indians. And I know certain food can make a persons breath smell, but like I said above, that goes for all different race, not just one. I think this discussion is childish of you. If a person stinks, then they just need a bath and that is not just Indians, it could be any race. Your remarks are hurtful to some and very imature. Are you sure you attended a University?

Either you just met Indians who are into onions, or the only two out of all those millions who smell like that. Maybe it's where they work. I've lost count of the number of Indians I've met, and my experience was quite the opposite. Some I know are positively fastidious about appearances, dress, and certainly don't smell. Matter of fact apparently some Chinese think we Anglos stink. It might just be what you're used to, or something to do with diet, yeah. But I certainly don't consider Indians to be even near my idea of serial stinkers.

You have a point, maybe it was the impression per race. We have this impression that Chinese have an active salivary gland, funny, but also, maybe because chinese people who i talked to always have extra/excess saliva that showers people, hehe! no offense, pls pls pls, just an experience.
