Playground for Grownups?

"Horst Gorther, deputy mayor of Neuremberg, Germany is planning an outdoor playground in the city with giant chessboards, card-playing areas, a running track and a padded badminton court. Only those 60 and over are allowed. The idea started in Finland, where the University of Lapland has experimented with making activity more playful for young and old. Forty test patients between 65 and 81 showed improved balance, coordination and speed after three months on a playground with climbing frames, swings and seesaws. They also built muscle and reduced fat." (AARP Bulletin, January 2007) Is this cool or what! Of course, by the time I'm 60, the swings might be the only thing I could manage besides playing cards! I certainly couldn't see myself climbing on bars! Well...maybe the seesaw! What a neat idea! LOL

I really think that this is a great idea to have an outdoor playground in the city with all of this to play with, especially for the over 60 which will keep them very active and their brains functions a lot better than being like a vegetable with nothing to do and life over more quickly for them. I think it is a wonderful idea.

It seems like a worthwhile thing. As I get older, it is harder to always be active. I don't know if they have such places here in the states. But it sounds great...as long as there is a doctor or ambulance nearby...lol.

I wish the US would take more pride in caring for their elderly. It seems in this country, we forget we may be there some day.

wow, that is a genius idea. i think it should be 40 and up but 60 and up is good too. i think it will benefit the elderly because they need some type of recreational things to do besides sittin in the house reading the paper and believe it or not alot of elderly are becoming more and more active now a days so i feel that this idea is great.

You know, we get sucked up into going to work, coming home, going to work, coming home...that after we retire we will probably not know what to do with our time. It is good to know some people are thinking ahead!

Great idea, but they should make them available for those 50 and older and not restrict to people who are older. Often times I look at the children's playground and am envious of them. My fear of falling and injuring myself keeps me from attempting to play on the equipment. What a delightful place it would be if also we could take our grandchildren to play as well. The children love the interaction with adults.

That sounds great, too bad I don't live in Germany that would've been a great place to visit when I'm bored.

I think this is an excellent idea. Kinda like the beginning and the end.....children and the elderly. Those in between can fend for themselves. Perhaps the most important aspect of a program like this is communication and interaction in the age group. Many elderly people stay at home watching TV or making do with what is available and many find themselves talking to themselves for lack of another warm body. I feel that one of the biggest setbacks of elderly people they many are set apart from others of their own age group by their own families who sometimes think they know what's best for their parents. Elderly people have a right to happiness and the abolition of lonliness in a monotonous world of being by themselves. While there are groups set up in the various communities it is perhaps still very confining whereas if the elderly were able to get out in a "playground" and mingle by contact and converstation it would seem their their minds would be more stimulated and therefore give them more incentive to be active to feel more "alive" and would help them stop feeling sorry for themselves by giving them a better reason to stay alert and thereby have more incentive to have "staying power".

Wow! I really like this idea a lot. I hope they have something in my area similar to this by the time I'm 60. I don't want to be stuck playing Shuffleboard through my retirement.

I know! When you work all of your life, you are used to going somewhere everyday and being productive. Retirement shouldn't take that away from us. We have to continue to be productive or we will die.

Leave it to those Finlanders to come up with such an idea, and the Germans to quickly adapt it as well. I wish things like this caught on so easily in the US. I would be one hanging from bars, I do now, though I am not quite 60. I think we do forget how to play, unless we take grandparenting quite seriously. I am not surprised by the physical improvements. I think swings are a fabulous alternative to crunches and sit ups.

I think it was in Monterrey, CA. We went to this Dennis the Menace park. I guess it wasn't really for just adults, but we had a great time. We felt like kids again.

Wow.. Brilliant! I think more cities should follow the idea. Besides for the good health, it can also create stronger community.

I love it! It's about time they started thinking like that, but they need some for us middle age people. I get tired of theses werid looks from other parents when I play on the monkey bars and hang up side down (right), then they just take up the chidren and run for the hills. No realy that's a good idea. I love going to the parks my self and I do indulge a bit at them with my son (he's a wonderful excuse).

What a truly marvellous idea and to limit it to the senior citizens is even better. The games area will be great as will some of the other features but I do think they could call it a "walking" rather than a "running track". Also I am not so sure about the climbing frame although there might be some out there who are more adventurous than others. Only 4 more years to go for me and by that time they might have built one of these here in Australia. LOL This is a really great idea and I hope that they proceed with the building of the adult playground without too much of a delay.

I just love the idea...an adult playground,'what a concept'. The media perpetuates the notion that after 50 it is all downhill, well that's just not true. And I think if we are not careful we will talk ourselves into believing this. When my mom was around 60, she had started looking at clothing, that lacked style, she had started selecting items that was simply drab and old. My sister and I started making some choices for her, the styles we selected were classic and tasteful. She started liking that new look, and now more than 15 years later she out-dresses me. Her clothing selections are 'too die for'.Check out http://silverfoxes.com. These folks just haven't listened to the 'hype'... SS...LOL

Wow, that IS a great idea! Hats off to the mayor of Neuremberg for taking such good care of the city's seniors. This will definitely help in promoting a healthy lifestyle among the aged. The U.S. can really learn from the Europeans. Europeans are really ahead in their thinking when it comes to health promotion and lifestyle.

LOL! This is such a wonderful idea, I'm so glad that it is coming to pass in Germany! We need something like that here in the states! It would be wonderful for so many older people here! ^_^ It's great to hear that these people showed signs of improved balance and coordination after 'playing' at this playground, as well! Kudos to whoever thought up this idea in the first place in Finland! ^_^
