Feeding the Birds

United States
January 9, 2007 1:27pm CST
We have several feeders in our back yard. They are placed a good distance from the windows, but within a distance to allow us to view the birds that have come to feed. We have to suet feeders. Fat is essential to the birds diet in the winter months. Black sunflower seeds are also great. In the morning we sit at the breakfast table and watch as the birds congregate around the feeders and on the ground to eat the bounty we have set out for them. It is relaxing and peaceful to watch them. We get cardinals, mourning doves, titmouse, and many others.

We have humming bird feeders on our deck. We don't have the seed feeders anymore because it attracted jays who would drive off all the smaller birds, but we kept the humming bird feeders. There's nothing quite like having your morning coffee, watching the sun rise, and being surrounded by dozens of flitting hummingbirds.

We have hummingbird feeders that we fill during the spring and summer months. We didn't get as many this year as we did in past years. Hopefully we will get them back. We moved the feeders and that may have been reason they stopped coming by. My intent is to place them back in the original places we had them. You are so lucky to have such a view. I would love to see a bunch of them hovering around the feeders.

How wonderful! We used to have a bird feeder years ago. I wish that it had been where we could have easily sat and watched the birds come and go. I really can't remember where we had it hanging. I just think that it is so wonderful to watch nature.

Are you living in an area that you can't hang a feeder? I would be lost without watching the birds.

I love watching the birds playing around our feeders and the pond or bird bath we have. My cats can't stand the fact they can't get to the birds so it's fun to watch that as well. For 2 years now we have had a momma bird lay her eggs in one of our houses. My kids have loved seeing the eggs hatch and watching the babies grow and fly away. Our back yard is a nature habitat. We have frogs and fish in the pond and rabbits as well. It is wonderful for the kids to be able to enjoy nature even though we live in the city. Don't you think it is only right for us to provide a safe invironment for these little creatures since we are taking away so much of there invironment? Do you live in the city or country?

We have a bird feeder in the front yard. We have several outside cats. Sometimes I wonder if that makes those poor little birds be easier prey for the cats, but for the most part the cats don't mess with them! I hand raised a baby Blue Jay from the end of July until the end of September last year. After I released him I hoped I would recognize him again, but I can't tell one blue jay from another! If nothing else he always has food out there! I reguarly see Cardinals, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Doves, etc. at the feeder. They are a pretty site.

I must confess that I am the opposite to you, as I never feed or encourage the birds to come around my house. Our last house was surrounded by trees and the noise from the birds was deafening. In Summer they would squawk from 4.00am until between 9.00pm or 10.00pm so we got very little sleep. Our new house has considerably less trees so we haven't as many birds. There is however, one pesky little wagtail who pecks on the glass door continuously and then flies on to the roof bars of my car while dropping all it's poop on to my sunroof. I bang on the door to scare it, I open the door a shoo it, and all to no avail. Yesterday, I even went out and got into my car and started driving, and still the little pest sat there. I don't know at what stage it alighted from my car as I had to keep my eyes on the road. But true to form, the little pest was back again this morning. If I catch it, I will put it in the post and send it to you. Ha, ha.

Sorry for laughing. My husband gets pretty upset when after he has cleaned our car he finds bird bombs on it.

We also have several feeders, we maintain them all year round and attract quite a variety of birds, we have 2 Bluebird boxes in our backyard that for the past 6 years have continually housed Bluebird couples throughout the season, it is such a joy to watch as they nest, lay, hatch and teach their offspring -- and I just can't get over that beautiful bright streak of blue the male sports, as well I like the flash brilliant red of the cardinals too. We either sit in the back yard and watch, of from our back windows, unfortunately we don't have a deck, or porch off the back of the house :) Happy Birding!

Well, good for you. I'm glad you're doing something that you enjoy so much. I should pick something that'll make me happy in the mornings when I wake up.

That does sound incredibly peaceful. My question though would be is that will feeding them cause them to hang around your house and expect to be fed all the time now. I know other animals are like that, but I am not sure if birds do that.

They come and go. It is funny when you think about it. when the feeders are empty and we haven't the money to refill them. They don't come around. Once we refill them they are drawn to the feeders. I guess they have one of their buddies on the lookout.

I used to have 2 bird feeders in my backyard, and really enjoyed watching them- as did my cat! It was actually more fun to watch the cat than the birds! Our town has banned feeding the birds right now due to a rat problem, believe it or not. I live in a suburb of the city, but the rats have found their way out here, and they apparently are attracted to the seed. Given the choices, I would prefer to let the birds fly to the next town than to have rats!

Bird watching can be lots of fun! If you have pine trees, you can also pick up the pinecones, rinse them and put peanunt butter on them and then roll in birdseed to coat it. The peanut butter is good for them and packed with protein. It just makes a simple treat for them. You can tie string around them and hang from tree branches.

It is better if you add some lard or shortening to the peanut butter. It is better for the birds.

Wow! You are so lucky. We live in the boonies, with a lot of trees around our property. We have eagles, cardinals, hawks, sparrows and I believe I've even seen a blue bird of paradise; even though don't know what one looks like for sure. Anyway, they poop on our cars and drive my husband nuts. So there's absolutely no chance in you know what that we'll be able to get a bird feeder. I don't even think he'd let us have an humming bird feeder. LOL

I have no birdfeeders but there are many blackbird in my garden, they use to wash them in the little waterfall of the pool. It's a bit boring always seeing blackbirds but...there's not much else here. Sometimes, at the beginning of winter we can see a robin. I'd like to see hummingbirds as someone said

I also like to watch feed the birds especially hummingbirds (I make the nectar myself). Last week one of the birds who had not migrated flew into the house. I had left the sliding door open for the dogs to get in and out. Poor little bird was a panic so was I.. I opened every door and window so it could get out with me flapping a dish towel behind it I finally got it in the right direction and off it flew none the worse for it's scare. So now I am back to dog door(wo)man.

Feed The Birds Day took place on Saturday 28 October. The big day marked the clocks going back and the start of the time when birds really need our help. Please provide food and water for to help them through the winter.
