Do you know the difference between faith and religion?

So often here I see people interchanging the two. I think most folks honestly don't know the difference. Religion is simply the expression of faith. My faith is my belief in God and in Jesus Christ as His Son and my Saviour. My religion is the way I express that faith -- going to church, reading the Bible and praying are all parts of my religious practice.

Faith Is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. If you believe you will act upon or stand by what is being said or what you believe. Without faith, it is impossible to please GOD. Religion. That says it all. Rules regulations,LAW. JESUS came to set us free from religious bondage (law). Go read about the religious acts of the Pharisees and you'll get a better picture of it. Of cos not all the Pharisees were like that. Thats my understanding from GOD word.

To me religion is the sum total of my beliefs such as Baptist, Methodist, etc. Faith is putting my faith in God and givig Him control. God saves us by faith through grace. I don't find anywhere where he saves by religion. But don't get me wrong, religion can be used as a positive influence in our lives. I just think it is sad that so many people hide behind their religion. It really upsets me when I see all of the negative posts about religion. It is obvious those people do not understand and they really get insulted if you try to explain. Thanks for the post. I like it a lot.

YAY BUN!!! I have been thinking about a way to say this. Just let me add: Religion is rote practice, which God specifically says in the Bible that He does not find honoring. Christianity is not religion. It is a RELATIONSHIP with a living God through Jesus Christ, the risen Saviour of humankind. Relationship indicates that you communicate, through prayer, and through responsible interaction with other parts of the creation including nature, animals and people.

To me religion is more of an organization and faith is more about your personal relationship and belief in Jesus and God. I think faith is what is most important.

Faith may be considered also as tradition, like celebrating feasts, christmas, new year or any type of holidays. As for Religion, it came from God. He called the first disciples, christians, in Antioch.

I would disagree. Traditions are all part of religion, not faith. Many people who have no faith still go through the motions of celebrating religious holidays.

Generally, when one is "blinded by their faith" it means that they believe something so strongly they fail to see. Though people can also be blinded by religion -- if they are so used to going through the motions that they don't know what they mean.

That's okay.. But how can say to this, "You are blinded by your (religion, faith)?" Answer..?

Religion is an institution to express belief in divine power while faith is accepting the truth and the person the truth actually represents.

I think faith is the outward expression of belief in your religion, religion is the tenants, the structure of the belief system.

I have the faith, I just don't like the rest of it! I know people say going to mass is important etc, but i think that there are many out there who do all that but don't genuinely believe in God. I'd rather have the faith and live my life as a good person..:)

The bible doesn't state anywhere that you have to attend church (or mass) to be a Christian... Just make sure you are well acquainted with who you are putting your faith in.

You can have faith without religion but you cannot have religion without faith. I have faith that the air which I cannot see will still be there tommorrow and I have faith that gravity exists and will keep working even though I can not see it. No religion is needed for me to have faith in those things. Religion however, cannot exist without faith because all religions depend on their followers having faith that "God" (in what ever form or by what ever name you want to use) does exist. Air and gravity can be proven but God has to be accepted by faith.

Actually, religion without faith is quite common. When you go to church, observe religious holidays, or do other religious things because it's what's expected of you or because that's the way you were raised, but you don't really believe in any of it, that's religion without faith.

hi guys...i want to say smethng regarding this, religion is people's belief and opinion concerning the existence, nature and of god/gods/divine...AND faith is to trust ur belief.

well i would tend to disagree with this opinion. i am a hindu and and hinduism preaches good for all and serve all. i pray to god but i dont go temple to pray. i sit in a silent place and think of god and thats the way i reach him. so according to me and hinduism if u do not serve good to people then u r not a hindu and serving good to people is my faith.

I would say that your belief in Hinduism is your faith, wheras serving is your religion...

I wonder though, isn't this a rather needless dichotomy? A religion requires faith in something, a God, ancestors, a saviour, something. And almost all faith is found within the context of a religion. I don't think they can be as easily divided as all that.

No, it doesn't and that's the point. Many people go to church every Sunday, do all the "right" things, say all the "right" things, and never take it any deeper than that. That is simply religion. There is no faith present in their lives.

Not necessarily. Often they are just going through the motions, doing things without even thinking about them at all. It's the "because I've always done it this way" mentality.

yes Bun, I understand what you are saying but in the example you have given those folk are still placing faith in the saying & doing of the 'right things.' kiwimac

faith is what you develop if you really believe in and devote part of your life to the religion.

Not necessarily. I know plenty of religious people who have no faith.

Bungirl, you just said it. That is why religion is NOT faith in practice. Religion is about what a person has decided to believe for themselves. Religion can be about anything at all: even football. In a "religious" sense, religion is man seeking God, based on man's beliefs and on man's terms. This religion is doomed to ultimate failure, simply because it is based on man (self). Christianity is about RELATIONSHIP. Christianity is about God seeking man and is on God's terms. CHRIST-ianity involves a personal acceptance of Jesus Christ as Saviour and LORD.

Oh, I was never saying that religion is necessarily based on faith, just that for me personally it is. Lots of people have religion based on culture, family, or even duty.

For me, faith is more personal than religion. What you belief deep down in your heart is your faith. What you practice that is required by the scriptures is called religion. when this two merge you are then a devotee.

Faith is what you believe in. Your spirituality for example. No matter what that faith might be it is what you decide to believe in. Religion is the formalizatioin of that faith. It is the organization of it and the grouping of others to that faith. You can believe in God and Christ and still not belong to a religion if you so choose for example.

Religion is social, customary and ritualistic. Faith is a strong heart felt belief in something. But I agree wholeheartedly. People believe that their religion is their faith. When Elton John recently stated that he thought all religions should be banned, although he said he repected the teachings of Jesus, people were up in arms. Likewise when John Lennon recorded "Imagine," and suggested that the world would be a better place without religion, people had a cow. But no one has ever suggested that Faith should be outlawed. We all need something to believe in, afterall.

Faith is what you believe but Religion is traditions and culture. Each nation are they own religion. Like Arabs, Christians, Indians ect. Even if you dont believe god they you still belong in some of the religion. But as I said Faith is your own and unique. Your Faith is only that what you believe. No one other may didn't believe same things like you.

Religion is general to all adherents, meaning the rules of worship, but faith is the level of acceptance by an individual, or the measure of his reliance or dependence on God.

Yes, faith does not require you anything, its your own belief, its your own way of believing that GOD do exists, it's your own way on how you believe that without GOD there will be no "us". Religion is simply the sum of all faith.. No matter if its a Christian, Protestant.. One thing that i can say, no religion will save man, only his faith that will lead him.
