Dramatic Human Lifespan Increase Within Our Lifetime

Does anyone here believe that the human lifespan will be significantly increased in the next 35 years? I am 47 now and in 35 years I will be 82 about the average lifespan for a male in the US today. I have a lot of faith in medical science and there are several medical breakthroughs announced every year now. I think I read that a cure for cancer or heart disease alone would add about 6 years to the average human lifespan. I firmly believe that aging itself will gradually be understood and slowed down if not halted completely. Life extension in mammals was first demonstrated by caloric restriction extending the life in mice by 30 to 50%. Now new drugs have been test that mimic the benefits of caloric restriction in mice and the studies will probably advance to primates next. Does anyone here share my optimism? Does anyone here use dietary supplements to try to slow down the effects of aging?

I think lifespans will increase into the future. With all the testing and breakthroughs in medicine...how can they not. I personally only take vitamins...and I am not afraid of aging...gracefully that is...

I share your optimism here! I take my vitamins everyday, but that is about it. I am still young, 24, so I am not super concerned, yet. I do believe in 35 years, the average life expentcy will be up to maybe even 100. We have taken huge strides in the last couple decades in technology and medicine, and I can only see it as a snowball effect. Once we gain great knowledge, we just develop more and more. I am sure cures for cancer will be found soon, and it will help the lifespan increase dramatically.

The lifespan has been increasing for years now. Medical advances, better diet and knowledge has really helped men and women to live well into their 80's and 90's with a good semblance of health. I work with the elderly and see so many more people still living in their own homes or apartments in their late 80's and 90's. More often than not, it's a fall or accident that brings them to the hospital and then nursing home for rehab. Dementia and Alzheimers can get you at any age - I've been people in their 50's already incapable of caring for themselves, but good health can be prolonged for quite a long time any more. So take those vitamins, exercise, eat healthy, brush your teeth, and live a positive active life!!!

You've been misinformed. The AL for a US male as of 2006 is 72.7 yrs. Leading pundits say that those born in 2050 should make it to ca. 125. Interestingly enough, "Modern Medicine" has only recently (...the last 20 years) begun to recognize the anti-agathic properties of "native" herbal products. And of course, one's genetics are the most important factor. Nothing happens but at their direction, one's strict adherence to phys-ed be damned.
