6 small meals or 3 big meals?

I would like to lose pounds from my present weight now. As I've been reading over some articles, some says that it's better to eat 6 small meals in a day, some says 3 big meals will be just enough. Or even others says, don't eat after 6pm. Can anyone tell me, which is really working?

Hi Camile, Six small meals is the best route. Although, they must be six healthy meals. The biggest problem is that most people who eat healthy don't have the appetite to eat so many meals. Due to the fact that if you are eating healthy your carb intake is rather low and the mechanism that triggers you to crave for food is insulin which is triggered by carbohydrates. Therefore, if you have no problems with organizing six meals this is the best thing to do because the constant eating drivies your metabolism to burn energy whther your resting or exercising.

Keeping your metabolism high is the key to losing weight. I suffer from thyroid deficiency and thyroid is the hormone that governs the speed of the metabolism. This is a disorder that affects more than 20% of women over 40 and about 15% of men. Very common, but a lot of people don't realize that it is the cause of their weight gain, and often it takes doctors a long time to diagnose. Eating large quantities automatically slows down your metabolism, which is one of the reason 6 small meals are recommended by so many dietary specialists. Therefore, it is important to get sufficient daily exercise any time you cut your caloric intake, because the metabolism slows down in response to the reduced calories, and exercise stimulates the metabolism which speeds up caloric burn.

I've found the smaller meals works for me. I can't say that's why I lost weight, but I'm not as hungry (for obvious reasons...) I'm a big snacker, though, and I think of the 'meals' as snacks more than anything. I don't think it has to do with the fact that you're eating less as much as the fact that you're getting more variety. If you have a hard time splitting things up that much, just try to spice things up a lot more. And I mean a LOT more. Throw a ton of different things in your cart next time you shop. "Oooo I haven't had that in a while!"... Get it! To wrap things up in a pretty little package for you to remember when you go to the fridge... you shouldn't be super hungry, and you shouldn't be craving anything... (oh and its okay to indulge a little... if you don't you'll break down... trust me haha...)

I think it depends what your schedule is. If you are busy and can barely fit in 3 meals, then you'd better stick with that so you can get your meals in. But I'm a SAHM and I can eat smaller meals so I try to. Plus it really helps me get through the day. I eat breakfast at 7 and supper isn't until 6:30 so that makes a long day for me and then I tend to snack if I don't eat smaller meals all day.

it depends on your personal choice and how it fits into your day 6 small meals a day works well for me to give me the carbs needed around workouts most bodybuilders diets are split into 6 or more meals a day but depending on if your working out and the time of day 3 could work just aswell

I believe in the smaller meal theory. I think giving up the late night snack is a good idea too. Lighter meals are easier on the digestive system and still provide good energy all day long. Sometimes, after eating a big meal, I find myself eating again a few hours later. It seems that bigger meals are less satisfying. If you eat smaller meals, you might have a tendancy to snack less often. That is where the calories can pile up...inbetween meals.

people i have talked to say that when dieting 6 small meals work better and they say not to eat after 6 so your food has time to digest because if you go to bed full you tend to gain weight that way.

I personally think that it is better to eat 3 big meals and one of the important things to doing that, and having it work, is as you said not to eat after 6 P.M. Also another thing that can be a big affect on how much weight you loose is what kind of things you do during the day and if you exorcise. Hope this helps!

I visit a message board online and a lot of the women there are doing very well with 6 meals a day, 3 hours apart and not eating after a certain hour at night. But I tried the diet faithfully for a few weeks and didn't lose or gain. I just felt like I was eating ALL the time, because three hours just isn't a lot of digestion time before eating again. It's worth a try though, it does work very well for some people.

6 small meals and not eating after 6pm (on most days) worked for me very well. i am trying to maintain my ideal weight despite my increasing appetite and slowing metabolism (im on my mid-20s) and this diet has been working for me. i eat often but in small servings and i do not eat after 6pm if it can be helped. goodluck with losing weight! =)

Definitely 6 small meals because it keeps your metabolism working to use up the calories. It will also prevent you from being so hungry you overeat. When you only eat 3 meals you are so hungry you stuff yourself and your metabolism is sluggish so your calories don't get used.

I always had a lot of weight to loose after having a baby. Since I was nursing I could not diet and had to make sure that I was maintaining a healthy diet. I have never liked the "full" feelig of a big meal. I think I am more of a grazer have followed the practise of small meals and snacks for most of my life. I really think that exercise is the best way to loose. Like I said I was nursing so diet was not an option and yet I lost all my weight. Walking is very good for you if you step it up a little and it is cheap as well as accesible. Just make healthy choices and don't slow down your metabolism by eating too few calories

I too could use to loose a few pounds. My doctor advised me to take 1/3 off my plate and save it for the next meal. by cutting down that way it would let me eat the same foods, cook the same way but save me 33% off my total food intake. sounds easy but it is hard to do. I have found that I treat that 33% as waste and the temptation to eat it is huge. I have worked out a plan that is similar and I do cook and eat less. I use smaller plates, smaller amounts and I buy less at the store. This has helped change my need for more. I do try to keep to the 33% principal as much as I can where I can. Good luck

the gap between two meals should be 4 hours. it is better to take small meals with low fat items. Dont go with snack items or oil food. If you wont eatfor long time you will get problems.
