Did you hear about the woman who was in a contest at a radio station? They were seeing how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom. The prize was a Nintendo game she wanted to give to her kids! I'll bet the radio station was shocked to discover they were promoting something that could be deadly! Wow. How sad! http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/13/water.intox.ap/index.html

That is so sad. Too bad she didn't have any warning signs. I have heard of people getting really sick from being over hydrated, but this is the first time I have read of someone dying from it.

I too had heard about drinking too much water. I think it was because someone once said you should drink so many 8 ounce glasses of water according to your body weight. In my case...it would be entirely too much! LOL and I heard it would be hard for your body to process it if you drank it too fast...but I never thought you could die from it either!

It's really amazing to me what some people will do to win a prize or make money. But in this case it is sadder because she was doing in for her children. She probably thought it would be easy and figured that it would be cheaper to drink water than to buy one. I found it strange that the CNN report didn't mention whether she was a single mother or married/divorced....I tend to believe it was the latter. I don't want to sound callous but I think it would be nice if the radio station that conducted the contest at least offered a Nintendo game to each of the three children.

The people that sponsor these contests need to research the effects that can happen as a result of them before they actually ask the public to participate.

I heard about that and was horrified. TV shows and Radio shows get away with too much. Just look at what Big Brother gets away with.

They played a response on the news tonight from one of the djs. A nurse called in to caution them about the dangers of drinking too much water. The radio person said yeah we know but they sign waivers. How sad is that? The poor girl, she just wanted to do something nice for her family.

That's just like those reality shows where the contestants are asked to eat all kinds of incredible things. Do you think they even bother to find out if any of those weird bugs might be harmful to us? They are too concerned for the ratings!

yes, but how much did the contestants understand. That is rare that that happens but....it can happen, and has happened! pretty reckless of the djs. they should be fired, and it doesn't relieve them of any liablility!!!

All they care about is ratings, and not whether people are injured or die. How sad is that?

Hi Mommy!! This is my first posting. I decided to comment on this because it is an interesting phenomenon. It's called 'water intoxication' and it can happen. Your body maintains a delicate balance of electrolytes needed to keep organs functioning properly. When you start dinking so much water in such a short period of time, you start to dilute the electolytes and the levels drop to dangerously low level. You will actually have symptoms of intoxication as your nervous system is effected, as well as your heart and other organs! If you keep going and/or don't get treated, you can die pretty quickly! It's crazy, but true. But your body can work to rid you of excess water by filtering more. But if you don't get it out, you can also damage your kidneys by letting stuff back up into the ureters and into the kidneys, where I imaigne they'd start to bloat and the tiny nephrons would be damaged. (that's why it's not good to hold your pee too long, and why your kidneys hurt when you do. Letting poisonous toxins get backed up into your delicate nephrons is REALLY BAD!!!)

Hi there. It is so cool having a daughter who is a lab technician who knows such neat stuff! That is quite interesting! There are more facinating things about how our bodies work that we don't even know and just take for granted!

I would never think drinking all that water would kill a person..she mightve been ok if she could go to the bathroom..who would even put someone through that sort of torture anyway? and for something so pointless...I've been in a few situations where I couldnt go to the bathroom and that was for medical procedures I cant see a person wanting to go through that for something they couldve very well saved the money up for and just went and got..thats so sad..

I read about this and was horrified that it could actually happen in this day and age. To make matters worse it was for something really insignificant in the whole scheme of things, although she was probably well motivated in wanting to give the game to her children. To make matters worse, they should not have been allowed to leave the premises for a certain amount of time after the end of the contest and they should have had someone present who has medical qualifications. I did read only a couple of days ago that the police were going to interview those responsible at the radio station with a view to charging them with some offence. I certainly hope that they do charge them, because it was awfully risky for them to have such a contest with no medical support.

that is so sad. they should have researched what could happen from drinking so much water without using the bathroom before having such a contest. I seen it on cnn on larry king live. he had her mother on as a guest.

That is very terrible. I can't believe the radio station didn't check on that before they told people to do that contest.

Oh...really a shocking news actually and sad to hear anyone dyeing of drinking water and water drinking is also considered as best health drink but, here it is again proved that beyond limits everything is bad.Even the best health drink taken in excess might become harmfull isn't it? so, everybody got to be carefull...anyhow, this is a very disturbing story really....

This is unfortunate. Just for a Nintendo game. But getting intoxicated with water, it's just something that I did not imagine before.

I heard about that. Although I do agree that the djays should have been fired,I don't think the radio station should be sued by her family.First ,her family was egging her on when they though they were gonna get something ,Secondly ,she signed a paper saying the radio station wasn't liable if anything went wrong.
