Have you ever kept a journal or diary to write in? Do you ever go back and read some of the entries? I read some of the entries out of my childhood journal and had a good laugh at the expense of my younger self. Share your journaling experience with me.

I did. My hubby found the one I had and we looked through it together. Some of the things I did not remember even doing. Others just brought back fun and good memories.

Haha. I don't know if I would have the guts to show some of my journal to my significant other. I might be too embarrassed lol. Thanks so much for replying.

Yes. I have a stack of spiral notebooks about 3ft tall now of ongoing journals. I consider them all as one gigantic journal and have even given the series a name - which I will not say here because the name is so cool that someone will use it as the title of a newsletter, make a million bucks from it, and not share it with me. I've gone back and read entries only a few times - and it's so funny to read what I had written years ago. Life changes so much and you don't even notice. It's almost like a different person wrote it. Most of the time if I pick one up, it's the latest one with blank pages to fill and I start writing. I move forward far more than I look back. My daughter will have a blast looking through these when she's older and I am gone. ...and she'll be the only one allowed to read them if I have my way.

Wow. That must be a pretty unique title lol. "Life changes so much and you don't even notice it"...you got that right! It's amazing to me how much maturing humans go through in such a short period of time. Thanks for the reply!

I keep a secret online diary that nobody else can read or see. I get creative and use my digital cam to take pics of things that relate to my moods too. The reason I keep it secret is because I am just private like that. It's something that is all mine that I don't have to share with anyone no matter how close I may be with them.

I like that picture idea! I think diaries should be a private thing. When you write knowing that others will see it, you tend not to write from the heart. For me, a diary is a safe place to get out all of your thoughts and feelings. You write in it for the benefit of yourself and not for public display. Thanks for sharing.

I keep a diary. I burnt my first diary book and threw the ashes into the ocean.. very dramatic. Well, this time I keep my old diaries. I like writing before I sleep. It frees the mind from the events of the day and have a restful sleep.

Well, that's one way of getting rid of past memories lol. Very dramatic indeed. I like writing before bed or in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. It definitely sooths and relaxes the mind. Thanks for your reply.

I started keeping journals after my children moved away. I was struggling with depression and it helped me to track my up and down points. I also did this during my divorce and it came handy to assist my case against my abusive spouse. I keep a journal just for the medications I am on so that I can track what is going on and if I need to consider change. I do not always keep my journals. I have burned some and shredded others. It is a good way to cleanse the mind before bed and a good way to get on with my life. I have also discovered that I do go through cycles and the journal helped me spot that. I considered doing it on the computer but that is so clinical. There is something about a person's hand writing that can show what that person is feeling and experiencing. I would not want some people to see what I put down and it is easier to use a journal and be able to dispose of it later.

Hmmm...I also suffer from depression. I've been off my medication for a while now, as I can't afford it. I've kept a journal for many many years, but the depression makes me not want to do anything, even write. But, hearing you say how much it has helped you, even so far as to help you keep track of your highs and lows, I think I will try to pick up that pencil more often. I agree with you about going the route of good ol' pen and paper instead of computer. It's not just the words that soothe, it's the process of forming the words that is healing too. Thank you for sharing your very personal experience with me.

I always had a diary when I was growing up and would get a new one every christmas from my grandma. I loved writing in them and still have them today 30 year later . I was a sappy love struck girl all of the time!! I still love to write.

Hahaha. It's so funny how an unreciprocated crush or a fight with your boyfriend means your life is over lol. I still have all of my diaries too and I still LOVE to write!! Thanks for sharing.

I used to write in a diary but I haven't forever and I haven't got a chance to go back and read it either. Maybe someday.

Why did you stop? I stopped for a long time, but when I started writing again I realized how cleansing it was for me. You should dig out that old diary, it'll be interesting I'm sure.

My partner bought me a diary for Xmas '03, and since then it has become an annual tradition. I fill it in every day and it has got me through some rough times, including having a hysterectomy. I've since been able to use it to write an ebook about my experience which I am planning to publish to help others. They can be a fantastic window onto your past, but my biggest moment of writing mine was to show it to my partner when she was fretting about her panic attacks and anxiety. I was able to show her the diary and remind her that a year before she hadn't been able to go out on her own. It made her realise how far she had come. That's the best you can ask for of a diary, I think!
