sinus infection

I want to know of any home remedies that will help with a sinus infection so I can breath thtough my nose again, lol. Here's the deal I have a sinus infection and I am not keen on taking pills unless I absolutely have to. I have tried cool mist humidifier steam/hot shower vapor rub vapor inhaler and using a bulb serynge to "suction" out the mucous and none of these have really worked so great. I am pregnant so anything I try has to be safe during pregnancy and I can not use nasal sprays at all, or spray anything in my nose. It is really sensitive and will bleed if anything gets in it, which is not good as I am a free bleeder. I appreciate any help you can offer :) Thanks

Instead of sucking out the mucus, use ocean spray saline mist or another mister and flush your sinuses. This will help greatly over time. In the US there is a product called Simply Saline that works wonders. If you want to breathe through your nose, then go get some good chineese food. take an egg roll or other item and then dip it in a generous amount of hot mustard. that stuff can open up any clogged nose!! You'll breathe again. You'll also need a gallon of water, but hey, there is a price for everything.

thanks for the advice, I may try the chinese food, lol, I love spicy food (& chinese), especially when Im pregnant, however like I said above I can not put anything in my nose, not even saline drops, it irritates the capilaries (sp?) and my nose will bleed like a running faucet

I think you have tried many of the remedies, when these could not help & you are pregnant you have to consult your doctor for help as you are in a condition where all medicines can be tried,so i think you have to consult your doctor. What do you say?

Great advice! Although she's looking for home remedies a doctor (especially when pregnant) is always a good idea. This may sound a bit unrelated, but hear me out. My mom had a real bad sinus infection & it went to her ears & she tried EVERYTHING she could think of to make it better. Then a few days ago she woke up & 1/2 her face was paralyzed! No, she didn't have a stroke. She had a condition called Bell's Palsy (people with weak immune systems due to colds & stuff & pregnant women are more susseptable). It's when an ear infection gets to the point where an important facial nerve gets compressed & that causes paralysis, it can even lead to blindness. My point here is even minor problems can sometimes get outta control & become weird, unheard of (because it's not well publicized) conditions. And just an FYI, you & your doctor won't endanger by taking preciption meds. They choose the most baby-safe meds to treat whatevers wrong - & if your still worried about the meds, tell your doctors & THAT person is the one best suited to get this sinus infection under control. :) Good luck & congrats on your baby!

If it truly is a sinus "infection" rather than just congestion, you need antibiotics whether you like it or not. An infection will have yellow or greenish mucus. An infection will not go away by itself and could potentially harm your baby. Talk to your OB. If it is just congestion, clear or white mucus, try menthol cough drops they are amazing for opening things up. Just be aware that you will either have to blow it out or swallow it down. What I have been doing for my congestion, I have a quart-sized rubbermaid bottle and I fill it with cold water and start to drink and try to finish half of it without taking a breath. It pulls the gunk out of my sinuses and down my throat. Hot herbal tea also works. But again ask your OB what kind of herbal tea to avoid. There are some herbs that aren't safe for the baby. They could cause pre-term labor. Good luck! :)

thanks, my ob has called some antibiotics in for me, and maxifed, but i really dont want to take the maxifed, so i am trying home remedies to help clear it up along with the antibiotics as they work very slowly.

Apple cider vinigar is supposed to thin the mucous and can help or even prevent a sinus infection. Mix 1/4 cup vinegar and 2cups water. Sweeten with a little honey if desired. Drink it thoughout the day. Cider vinigar has wonderful health benefits.

I have never heard of this as a treatment, but I get these recurring infections and haven't tried this yet. I too hate pills and squirting stuff up my nose.

Another option to get rid of the mucous is to cut up an raw onion into large slices, like you would an apple, and then to chew the slices. You have to do this over a wash basin as it becomes quite messy. The onion juices helps to discharge all the slimey stuff. I've tried it a few times and it works, but I'm not that fond of raw onions.

First off ... I would like to say Kudos to you for wanted to go natural! I have also had some trouble with sinus problems and been disgusted at most "solutions" while the warm mist does help long term, I really don't like putting stuff up my nose either. However, I have found that large, and I do mean large, amounts of garlic can cure most things. Garlic has many antibiotic properties and best of all ... NO nasty side effects .. (unless you count your breathe!) other then a chance of upsetting your stomach (if you are sensitive to it) ... I usually squeeze it fresh if I am feeling poorly and take it with some honey on a spoon. 1-2 cloves at a time .. several times a day will kick the "snot" out of most infections including a sinus infection. Now ... I have heard and read that you can make a garlic oil and put it IN your nose ... but that sounds like its not an option for you. In any case good luck and I hope you find something that works well for you! oh .. Congrats on baby :D

thanks, I didn't know that garlic was good for your health, lol, Im gonna have to try that, does the honey kind of help the taste?

Yep , the honey makes it easy to just swallow down. The trick is to put the garlic in the middle of the spoon, and completely cover it with the honey then you can just swallow it without tasting the garlic too much. ;)

Even I am infected by this disease. I don't take any medicines either as they may have side effects too. I believe in doing some breathing exercises that works for me well. Initially I was not able to breath through nose and felt suffocated even when breathing thru mouth. I realised that Breathing exercise can only come to my rescue. thats all. Even you can try that every morning taking in and taking out air through your nostrils.

boil water and then place the pot or bowl of water on the table . Get a towel and then lean over and breath the steam and keep the towel over your head so the the steam stays in. Just be safe and be careful to not get burned.

I am not much a fan of home remedies. To think of it, these over-the-counter vapor inhalers tend to injure the nostrils more, and worsen any sinus infection, and suctioning out mucous will only give you temporary relief. I have had sinus problems practically all my life, and the best thing that I did and really, really did give me super relief, was when I consulted an EENT doctor. I think it will be best for you, too, to see one, especially now that you are expecting. I believe that this is the most surefire and safest way of you dealing with this problem. Hope you have a healthy and bouncing baby!

Have you tried VICs Vapor Rub? I've heard it works great. Also how about a paper bag? Here's what you do. 1- obtain a medium size paper bag (brown if you like) 2- fill with mint leaves 3- twist the top of the bag 4- place in microwave for about 10 seconds 5- remove bag - careful with steam 6- let bag cool for 3 seconds 7- open mouth of bag and place against face 8- breath taking deep breaths repeat as necessary. Good luck. Nigel

Eucalyptus is good for such a thing. It will shrink those inflamed sinus tissues. Try breathing warm steam from a bowl or pot of hot water(carefully). Add some eucalyptus in oil or herb form. It is an antiseptic and will help decongest. Of course drinking lots of fluids such as water, herbal teas and broth soups will help get things flowing. To help relieve sinus pressure, carefully apply a hot(but not too hot) damp towel over your face. THis will help get the blood flowing to the sinuses and flush away the infection. Good luck and get well soon. :)
