There is actually a condition called Hoarding that is directly related the the accumulation of animals and the inablitiy to care for these animals. Often times hoarders are in denial of these facts, as well - basically it's a psychological problem.
Most cities do have laws regarding the amount of animals one can own. Problem is that until a neighbor complains situations such as the above go unnoticed - and then once they do get discovered most of the animals end up being euthanized because they are either feral (cats) or just plain mean.
Very sad...

she supposed to let them out if she can't feed them or bring them to local animal shelter. Goodness, stray cats sound way better off than these pets! is there a petition we can sign to put this person in jail? let's see what she can do among real beasts in prison

I don't think that would be fair for the people who can handle many animals in their homes. I think people should know when enough is enough and try not to get more animals if they can see that they can't take care of them.

I agree this is horrible. I would assume that most cities do have a law against that. However how would you even come close to catching people before it gets to this point? There is always a place where you can get free cats somewhere, so no one knows how many cats someone has, unless some one reports it.

True.Yesterday I saw huge, I mean huge raccoon. I aks myself how animals can survive winter, but than I start thinking, around humans is so easy to find leftovers.
I better leave wild cat alone than not to be able to take care of it.

I've seen similar to such things and it makes me sick. I cannot understand how any one could do that. The animals have no choice, they can't speak out if the owner isn't taking care of them. I know there are medical problems associated with it but still they had to know what they were doing to the animal. How can you ignore such happening?
I know some areas do have limites, mostly on dogs. Some don't care on cats unless someone complains. Sad I know. Other areas it's limited. I can understand having a limit especially when you are in the city. In the country the limits might need to be looser but still should be a reasonable amount for one person to take care of.

Wild animals can take care of themself, when they are indoor, starving is a crime. Normal people will at least call shelter for help.

I love animals and I am sorry to hear about that women. She deserves punishment for her crimes. It is not a problem to have many animals.. Yes it may sound absurb but if a person likes to help animals and keep them at his house then he should not be denied. There are good people around who successfully keep many animals happily in there house. Problems are created by people who do not care for one pet and still goes for large number of pets. Sometimes it is also a money problem... But to have money problem and keep large number of pets at home is a crime.. You can not starve your pets because you can not afford to buy food. Good idea would be to hand it over to animal shelters all around country.
It is hard to pass any law to restrict number of animals you have at home. It is every persons right to have as many pets as they want but also it is there duty to handover pets to animal shelter when they can not care for them.

Agree. In my town you can have no more than 3 dogs in one house. I did not hear about cats regulations.

That's horrible. Unless this woman was a recluse and no one ever came to her house, someone should have known what was going on. Hopefully she will be charged with cruelty to animals. It's really sad when this kind of thing happens, but it's also sad how many homeless cats there are on the street and in the shelters/pounds,and how many get put to sleep each year because so many people want to let them breed.
It usually seems to be old ladies who end up doing this. They are probably senile.

I think most states have a limit. I know we do in MS. I guess they have to be turned in by someone first though. I am appalled when I hear anyone mistreating animals or kids. Neither one can defend themselves and have no way to get out and take care of themselves. I hope this person was dealt with in the right way and did not get by with this mistreatment. If there was something wrong with the person you would think family members would have noticed and not allowed that many cats to even be in the home.

I agree that there is something wrong with someone who has this many pets. I don't see any way that a person can properly care for all of these animals, and obviously she wasn't. At least she will be up for criminal charges for this, and will most likely be convicted of animal cruelty. I know that there has been talk about making it mandatory to register cats just as you do dogs, but I don't think that it has been pursued, mainly because so many people do have multiple cats and many let their cats run outdoors. It would be too hard to keep track of them. To me, owning a pet is a privilege and a responsibility, and people who cannot care for them properly have no business having them. These animals are totally dependent on humans, and it is unfair that they should be living in these deplorable conditions. There should be a limit to the number of animals one has, based on their ability to care for them. I think that the majority of people who have huge numbers of animals are found to have some type of mental illness. Most normal people would not do this.

I agree. There is a point where even if you love them, you are doing them more harm then good. I think that most places do have a limit on the number od animals that you can have. I do not know if this is the same in the country or not. I do not know that much about it. I know that where we live you can only have four dogs before you can get in trouble. Though many times we see people that have 5-6 or more!! With that many you have to question if they are really being taken care of. And in this case, 30 is way to much. They could just have a mental condition and just not know that it is not right, it is called hording I believe. They need help, not just punishment.

Most cities do have a set limit of how many pets one can have in a home without a special permit. I am just saddned hearing about those poor cats.

How horrible. That lady is mentally ill and needs treatment and should serve some time behind this. I do believe cities should set up limits, but the thing is are these people going to abide by them?

OMG that is horrible . I can't believe anyone could do this to an animal . Growing up we had loads of cats that lived in our barn but we always made sure they were all fed and well taken care of . People were forever dropping off their cats because we had a barn and they figured we wouldn't notice one more .
In my opinion , anyone who could hurt any animal would do worse to a human because an animal never does anything to purposely hurt you . They will defend themselves if they feel you are invading their terriory but they will never purposely hurt someone .
I think it would be hard for the city to set limits only because it would be really to hard to know how many pets a person has just because people do pick up strays all the time .

For sosmeone to even want 30 or more cats there is a problem and he or she should probably not even be trusted with one.
Maybe you love animals, but if u are sane you know that there is nothing normal with owning 30 cats. I definatgely think that there should be a law and that u have to seek a permit iof you wanna breed cats or any other animal!

Yeah, they need to put a limit on the number of cats you have in your home. It is hard for one person to care for that many cats in the right way, they become over crowded, and it becomes a disturbance to the neighbors. I think it is cruel and the people who do it have something wrong with them.

This kind of news freaks me out. I can't believe that she keeps so many cats and just to let them starved. She has the responsibilities of her pets and yet she ignored them.
