I was just wondering what your thoughts were on the show, The Biggest Loser. Do any of you watch it?
One day I had nothing to watch, and I was flipping through the channels when I found the Biggest Loser. I had heard something about it so I decided to watch the pilot. You know, I don't like reality TV one bit but this show really caught my attention.
I like The Biggest Loser because I think it actually helps people. It gives people motivation to lose weight, and great tips for viewers at home.

Oh yes- I think the Biggest Loser is a great reality show. It teaches these people how to lose weight the correct way and how to keep it off.. Also putting people together with their peers so they can bond. It gives the viewers hints and suggestions on how to lose weight and eat healthy.. I like how they go to restaurants and basically tell you what to order to keep it good for you. But then again who has nothing to do during the days but work out and eat healthy? I love how it shows these people months after- showing people you can take it off and keep it off. It would be great to do a show like 5 years later.. To see if they are still healthy. Its a great show!

I do really like it. I like how they have food tips and exercise tips and such and it is a motivation to lose weight.
However the contestants seems to lose weight unhealthily. The winner of our Biggest Loser (Australia) had to have an operation to remove excess skin because he lost the weight to quickly.

It isn't uncommon for someone severly overweight to have excess skin. Some of these people are 400 pounds and when you go down to 180/190, you are going to have skin that was stretched to far and won't bounce back!

I would love to try out, but i just started a new job and I do not have enough time to stay the 3 months, but on their website www.biggestloserclub.com, they have an online 16 week challenge, u get to do it all, and don't have to leave your state. I have even become addicted to exercise.

i like the show although i don't watch it much because i'm just not a TV person. But at work last year we had a "biggest loser" competition where we each paid $10 (if u wanted) and whoever lost the most weight won the money. It was fun and motivating. we're doing it again this year. I have heard of other places of employment doing this also. i think its great :)

Tarrish, I happened upon the program the same way that you did. When I saw the title, my first reaction, was "Who wants to watch a program about a bunch of fat people? Especially when you have been struggling with weight all of your life." Anyway, for some reason I started to watch it, and I was very impressed with the approach that they took in addressing exercise and diet, making each of the contests focus on their own weaknesses and how to address them. I actually got interested in the program and looked forward to watching it. I didn't watch every week, but I did make sure to watch the finale.
There is one thing that I strongly disagree with, and that is the focus on total weight loss. Its one thing to lose 150 pounds if you are 300 pounds to start with, but quite another to be competing against someone for the title if the other person is only 200 pounds to begin with.
I think they should focus more on overall health with emphasis on balance. It isn't just total weight loss thats important but the realization that you have to develop a program that you can live with so that your success isn't short-lived.

They don't actually decide the winner on total weight loss, it is percentage of weight loss according to their weight. That makes it more fair. If they went by total weight loss, every person on the show would have to start off with the exact same weight, height, age, etc.

Yes, it does make sense to me. I gather after the second to last show the 4 remaining contestants left the ranch and then the final show occurred 5 months later, with them having achieved their weight loss goals. They didn't seem to monitor much of what they were doing during that time, although I gather with the prize money at stake they did follow the programs.
The one thing that I thought was amazing was that altogether they lost over 4,000 pounds.
I think it would be very meaningful if during each new season they featured contestants from the previous seasons who have been successful in keeping it off, because that is the really big challenge of weight loss - maintenance.
Interesting discussion. Thank you.

I love this show and watch it all the time when it is on. The trainers are very good on here and push people and motivate them to lose weight. It is amazing how much weight some of them lost during the show and after the show. I think possibly winning a lot of money motivated them more than anything to lose the weight. I just hope the rest of America doesn't get fast just to be on the show and to win money. It definitely provides good tips for people at home to lose weight, especially with the food and workout routines.

I find the show motivational and guilt-inducing. It is really pathetic to be sitting and watching the show while eating a bag of chips. LOL! I do think they push the people a little too hard. You should start exercise slowly and build up or you risk hurting yourself, which several people on the show have done. That's the only thing I don't like about it. They push them really, really, really hard.
If you don't get this show but would like to know more about it, they do have a website where you can get tips on exercise and diet. One of the trainers, Jillian, left the show to make videos... and a fortune. Bob Harper is all over the place right now. Ellen Degeneres has hired him as her personal trainer and he is on her show every week.
I think the show helps you to see what you must do, but in the end you really should pace yourself.

I really like the show. I love when they give the tips. I've watched it every season so far.
Part of the reason I like it is because obesity is such a big problem. It does encourage people severly overweight to try and realize they CAN lose weight.
One season they had families that had teenagers who were overweight and the teenagers were harder to get motivated then the parents were!

I actually really like the show. We have our own version here in Australia and Bob and Gillian come out here to be the trainers. And I agree with you when you say that the show is motivational. Seeing someone loose that much weight in that period of time can be nothing else but inspiring.

I like the idea, they came down to our town nashville and chose people.
Its weird that other countries such as uk,ca, dont have a reality show like this because i would watch it. But i watch our show from time to time.

I love this show. If I can't watch it the night it is on, I record it. My daughter and I have said that we need to be on that show. I think working out so much isn't always good for you but they were competeing for money so thats what they needed to do. I would love to lose weight and this show gives me some motivation to do it.

It also made me aware that i need to do something so that i can live a long and healthy life like i planned. Now i eat healthier and i started to exercise. I am losing weight and gaining muscle and it all thanks to the biggest loser.

According the biggest loser is the one who is never happy and always making others unhappy.
who is dependent on others and thinks of hinself as the best.
