Am I Wasting My Time?

United States
January 24, 2007 9:16am CST
I have spent a good hour this morning removing myself from random subscriptions. I don't recall even signing up for these so called mailing list subscriptions. My email has been bombarded with a ton of free offers and CRAP! It seems to work for a little while, but than WHAM... I am being slammed again. Does anybody else have this same problem and any suggestions on how to make it stop?

A lot of spammers use the unsubscribe link to confirm your email address is valid. If you block them by domain name, they can't hit you with rotating addresses, but eventually it thins out because many spammers use sub-domains of the domain names, and they are blocked by the domain block. It's an uphill battle, and a bit of a pain, but worth it. If you have it posted on a website, spam bots pick it up and use it. I encrypt my email links on web pages to keep the bots from finding them.

That sounds like a good idea. How do you encrypt your email address?

I used to get tonnes of spam, but then I opened a gmail account and forwarded all my mail from my old email address to the new gmail account. Now all my spam is filtered through gmail's spam filter, which works amazingly well. I would recommend doing this.

dont go and unsubscribe, its a waste of time, cos after you unsubscribe you will realize that the inflow has rather increased. at least thats what has happened with me. i just keep putting them in the spam category. but so far havent been able to figure out how to get rid of these.

Yeah, you can add them to spam and set your spam blocker level to only accept mail coming in from people or we or email addresses that you chose only. That way, most of the junk will be filtered out.

You can minimize the spam by refraining from posting your email address in the internet.

Last time this happened to me I changed my email adress. I couldn't think of anyway around it. And now I am very careful where I leave my email details and the boxes I tick. Very often when you sign up to a site there is a box that gives permission for third parties to contact you, make sure you untick this box. Sorry cant be any more help.

i think everyone have spam being bombarded in their inbox, thats why i do not give my personal mail to any of the sites i visit online, and if i were to give out my email address i would give the one which i do not use that much.

I think I made the mistake of giving my personal email address to a company I placed an order with. Normally, I would have given them one of my spam email accounts.

I would suggest using a new email and just leaving your current one to collect all of the garbage it is getting now.

I think most of us know that feeling, I spend loads of time going through my e-mails, I too have been unsubcribing from these offers and such like. I use my hotmail account for almost everything even though I have other e-mails accounts. Does anyone know where to send these e-mails as spam on hotmail?

According to the majority of people on here, we're not suppose to unsubscribe. It's the spammer's way to confirm your email is open and ready for more spam. LOL I don't know about hotmail, maybe you could start a discussion and ask for help.

You can buy spam software or just delete those junk emails without reading or opening them.

Have you tried the spam software and how can you be sure it doesn't delete your important emails as well?

Hi. I have been getting alot of junk mail recently too, but you can set your spam filter to block some of this unwanted junk mail from coming though. You can set up your email to only accept email addresses that you actually add in yourself. Im not sure what internet service provider you have, but you can contact them and they will tell you how to do it, if you should not be able to do it on your own. Hope this helps ya.

Most of these emails are often spam. Most would give you unsubscribing instructions however this is a clever way of most spammers to tell whether the account is still active. So if I were you don't bother following the unsubscribe instructions.

yeah, I believe that is very true because unsubscribing seemed to be increasing my spam mails.

You just mark all such mails as spam without opening it. I also faced the same problem, i used to open it and then mark it as spam but no use ofcourse. But now,my account is clean and i hardly receive any spam..

I'd say you should unsubscribe to those mailing list of yous if they are only a bunch of scams besides you've already said that those offers to you are just crap, so i'd be better for you to unsubscribe before something worst happen like they will start to collect money or information about you, be careful these days my friend many web sites say that their offers are free, keep in mind that these days there are no more real free stuffs

Most people here are saying it's a mistake to unscribe. It's just a ploy to confirm the email is active.

hey try not opening any of the mails you dont know or havent heard from before.before you know it you ll have a virus or a spyware in your computer draining all the information out.you can mark these e mails as spam so that they do not come in but it is almost nearly impossible to block spam mails.so i rather guess you delete them out.

Good advise, thanks, I should know better about opening email. I just wanted the emails to stop, so I figured I would see. That's when I realized there was an unsubscribe option. But you are totally right, who knows what I actually opened and exposed my computer too.
