I've always heard that there were going to be 9. Then I heard Lucas was going to stop at 6. Then again, I've never put much stock in what he says as he always waffles on stuff like the DVD's.

In 1980, when The Empire Strikes Back was released in theaters, TIME Magazine had a sidebar to its cover story in which it told readers about the whole Episode V thing and explicitly said that the three-film arc that would conclude with the then-untitled Episode VI was itself the middle of a nine-film series, with Episodes I-III detailing (as they eventually did) the rise of the Empire and the fall of the Jedi, and Episodes VII-IX were going to be set several decades after Episode VI.
Lucas has since denied this, saying only that this was conjecture based on discarded story ideas for the first trilogy and that all the talk of a nine-film saga was rumor and speculation.
Then again, Lucas did say he'd never release the original versions of the Classic Trilogy on DVD, and yet he did so last year!
As much of a fan of Star Wars as I am, I don't think the movie-going public or even long time admirers of the saga would like another Trilogy. The reaction to the Prequels was not always favorable (I liked them), and Episode III was totally snubbed at the Academy Awards last year...

I don't think George Lucas can make up his mind how many films there were meant to be.
I have seen interviews where he states he originally envisaged 1 film, and then realised the story was too big. Then he has said in another interview he originally saw 9 movies!
I think it's more likely he had a very vague outline of what he wanted to happen, rather than a detailed plan.
There are lines in Episode 4 which contradict what happens in the following two films which are got around with some dodgy dialogue. Can anyone remember "What I told you was true, from a certain point of view"?
I tihnk it's fairly obvious that at the the time of making "Star Wars" - or Episode 4 as it's now known, George didn't even think that Darth Vader would be Luke's father.
