I worked for a company for 14 years. I worked very hard for those 14 years. Putting in tons of overtime and working like crazy. I trained so many people I lost count. I did everything they asked me and more. The company started to change, getting younger people who would work for less money and then slowly I began to see what was gonna happen. About 6 months ago I was told that they were reducing staff and I would be let go. At that time we were quite busy. After all I put into this company they just said we don't need you anymore. I think they just like younger people who make less money and are not fully vested in their 401k programs. What is going on with companies today??? Has anything like this happened to you????

It seems to be the trend in so many companies these days.
After 17 years with the company that I worked for, I could see the same thing coming, so I left them and started out on my own.
That was in 2000, and I'm glad that I did...
Today's employers are going to get a rude awakening when they finally learn that the power of loyalty works both ways.

I think today the company is a more professional and they don't care about sentiments and so if you put such allegations I will not tell you that you are wrong previously the companies are more close to the employs n they should take care of them. but nowadays they don't bother about any problem you have because they know that if you leave they have many other such people whom they can hire and get the job done so actually now companies just want people to work for them and they don't want in a special relationship with them to even we should maintain a very professional approach and work for advancement only and not for the good of the company is just like give and take policy

ONe of the problems with better healt is longer lifespan. Retirement and the benefits that come with it, were meant to be used for a very short time, because the life expectancy was about 70 at best. YOu are correct in your assesment that they hire the young because they work cheaper, but also, they canbe lied to more easily. Companies don'thave to be nearly as equitable or ethical with younger workers.
Yiu might consider getting an attorney. IF you know there was work comoing in and the company was not actually downsizing, then you might have a good case. I bet theyhave the same number of employess as when you were there, but many are younger. IF that is the case, then there was no downsizing, and that company is guiltyof age discrmination.

Being a human resources professional, I would say your company has adopeted the wrong approach to a loyal and experienced employee like you..no doubt on that.
Because of changes in global business practices, technological innoavtions etc.,some of the best skills of yester years might be considered as useless today and young people those who have acquired the skills which are in demand might be quoting less for work. But the company should be able to treat its senior people with equal importance. Nobody can sideline your contribution towards the growth of the company. Also the company should be able to provide you opportunity for skill updation. But to be frank, the concept of job security is not exisitng anywhere in the world except government jobs. So try to learn new things and update your skills..best of luck

It hasn't happened to me but, I know what you are talking about. My husband works for a Kohler factory and a few years back they let go a bunch of salary employees. They had been there a long time. They even had to escort some of them from th building they were so upset. I felt sorry for them. My husband says he won't accept a salary job for that reason. I feel so bad about your situation. Hope it turns out to be a blessing in disquise.

This just happened to my husband. I mentioned it in your other post. We are devistated. He is 70 years old, healthy, and cannot retire. He is a licensed optician, and has tons of experience. They replaced him for a young girl, no experience, and half the salary. We are in a bad way now, and nobody wants to hire him. So dear, I know exactly what you are talking about. And unemployment does not help, it's a joke. Good luck to you, blessings, M&M

This is happening all over the place. I don't think it's right and I don't think it's fair at all. Some people have been there building the company from the ground, too bad, so sad, hate to see you go. I't all about the "Almighty Dollar" I see it happen everyday, and it sickens me.

yep. it's not right that the old employees who helped a lot for the company to grow just get to be forgotten after sometime.

I worked over ten years with my current employer, and though they haven't asked me to leave yet, they are making it difficult for me to work there. I am attempting to keep up with the changes, but I am failing miserably. I've started the process of looking for another but I fear at my age, I am going to have a struggle.

I think they do care and infact more if u compare with situation back 20 years back. Employees are given better facilities , no doubt that the these comps are earning in the same ratio.

It hasn't happened to me, but I've heard a lot of companies do the same thing. they prefer the younger, fresh grads so that they can pay them less. Companies would rather hire temps just so they wouldn't have to "regularize" people and give them benefits, which cost money.
i guess it all depends on the people heading the company. Some are just total sharks, looking only at the bottom figure without a thought as to how many people's lives they destroy by firing them.
but there ARE others out there who DO care and will give an employee benefits without the employee having to shell out a portion of his/her salary to guarantee those benefits.

I think it's the trend now. Companies are ungrateful and only after savings; loyalty and devotion don't matter anymore. Even privately-owned companies who used to value their employees have stopped caring. Yes it has happened to me too.

Hi there, b4 that, I feel sorry for you. The right thing to do is look at other places...who knows, you'll better of. In your free time, recall the 14 years you've put in the good service in the current company. If you realized that you've endeavour some mistakes, rectify and improve the situation so that you'll not repeat in the new place. Always think positive and be cheerful. Think of the days ahead. Reserve you anger! Good luck in your futureundertakings.

Its because there are lot people who are yet un-employed and who can do job at any cost and at any bets. So, the company manager doesn't cares about the employe that if he or she does not work according to them they can fire them and hire a new one very easily.

it is selfishness and lack of consideraion for others on the part of most entrepeneur coupled with lack of the fear of God.
My experience is similar to yours. As at the time of writing, the last company i worked for is owing me 5 months salary.
Just believe in God,be prayerful, hopefull and hard working GGod owns everything and he will compensate you.
My advice is that you should see how you can be your own boss. There's nothing like it.
