Get him tested as soon as possible outside of the school system with a specialist in learning disabilities. There are a lot of different learning disabilities out there and only a specialist can rule them out or confirm them.
Even if your son does have ADD/ADHD, he could also have other problems. My son has a combination of ADHD and Aspergers' syndrome.
Medication is not the only answer and a specialist can give you ALL of your options. Even if he does need medication; it may not be forever. Sometimes they can give them meds for a couple of years; so, they can adjust to the school routine and then start to wean them off and/or replace the meds with other therapy. My son took ritalin for his ADHD; but, the Asperger's was treated with group counseling and martial arts training (which also helped his concentration and ADHD, lessening his need for the meds).

I would have him tested outside of the school system. If he is testing at a 3 year old level it doesn't quite sound like ADHD or ADD.
My son has had a learning disability and we've known since he was born that he would have one. He was born 10 weeks early. It is SO hard to admit that your child has a problem. I know it took me a while to realize that I couldn't fix it. He had speech disorders and was behind on his gross motor skills. Plus he always tested way behind his level. When he was 5, he was testing at a 3 year old level. He started kindergarten this year and with all that special help he is above where he should be in everything except speech.
Have you asked him why he won't do his work? Christian will tell me if he can't do it because he doesn't know how or if he simply doesn't want to do it. If it is too hard, of course he isn't going to want to do it :(
I'd say what options you have available to him but I don't think he has ADHD/ADD simply because he won't do his work. That is sad if that is their first thought :(

I am wondering .does he seem to have an attention problem? Or does he have just a problem learning? because they want to say that alllll kids that have any problems now adays have ADD or ADHD,,its rediculous! they are expecting wayyy too much out of kids anymore..In my area they have this place called Olan Mills..and its a place to help children having problems..You need to ask your school what tudoring help is avialable..maybe he just needs taught in a different way..but i would fight ADD AND ADHD till u knew for sure..dont let them push you just because they dont know for sure at first..take some testing..it could be as simple as maybe his eyes need looked at and he cant see weel enough..it could be anything hun..just dont let them bully you into anything til u know for sure..ok? take care!

I know just what you are going through. my son was having the same issues. I mean i was going to the school at least 3 times a week. he was getting sent home and letters. what i did was get him in to see a counsler. goes every tuesdays and when ever he is having a bad day. see a doctor about his food intake. i say that because some foods can have your child very hype breakfast is very important. more protein no sugar. i would say to give him skim milk and not whole milk. i have never given my son and of the meds they wanted to put him on. he is 11 now and he is doing much better. you just have to take care of those things i mentioned. and most important you have to make sure you tell him you love him. make sure you let him know that he has to work hard to do better. just encourage him to always do better. trust me i know it is hard. i wanted to knock my son out a few times. but with all the crap the get from teachers telling them they are bad, they need to know no matter what they are loved. stay positive and just be strong, cause it is not easy

I will respond both as a parent and as a teacher.
First as a parent. I have twins that were born 3 months premature. We were on the lookout for things from the get go. I had them tested at 3 for impulsivity issues, they already had speech issues we had been dealing with since the were one. They qualified for preschool disability and saw a specialist at school to help them with impulsivity and staying with work until complete. (they have been in a Montessori school since they were 3) They saw a speech therapist 2 times a week at school as well as privately out of school. Both seemed to progress well. Dagan progressed with reading better than Gus. Gus was better at science and math than Dagan. Fast forward to 1st grade. Dagan continued ONLY with speech. Gus was diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability in Reading. He sees a specialist 4 times a week and is no longer in speech. But he also sees OT a couple of times a month. Both are doing great in school but it is still a struggle at times. I too have gone through periods where I questioned ADD/ADHD
The teacher in me says get him tested outside of school. If you have a center like Olympus or Children's do outside testing. There is nothing wrong with testing. Assessment helps to better understand your child's needs. It is DIFFICULT to admit their might be something different about your child, but putting your head in the sand only does a diservice to your child and quite possibly the entire class, depending on the severity. As a parent I have wanted to cry in IEP (special ed) meeting for my children and my student's children. Sometimes there are things that are hard to hear. You need to understand if in fact your child has ADD or ADHD or if it is something else all together. But you won't know until you have the child properly assessed. A proper assessment will look at IQ, standardized testing, emotional issues, etc. You need the two day battery of tests to really get the proper information. If you wait for the school to do it, it can take a VERY long time.
I wish you well. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!
