Why no recycling in Texas?

I was horrified to learn from someone who recently visited this state that there were NO recycling facilities - the householder just threw everything into the general rubbish bin and that was it. Can anyone confirm this? if this is indeed the case can you say why it is not done? We get 3 bins supplied by the council - one for paper, plastics and tins, one for green waste and one for everything else. I would have thought that this was the case in the US in general!!

In Texas it seems to not be mandatory (although I think it should anywhere) but more of a choice to recycle. We recycle by taking items to the recycling plant and get a few dollars back. Hey why not? We get less than what we spent initially but we ARE still getting money back and saving the environment. If I had more time and power in my city I might look into seeing what could be done about some council supplying three different bins.

Getting a few dollars seems like a good sort of bribe! Maybe you should run for office:)

From what it sound slike you were told wrong. I kind of thought every state would have some sort of recycling place. They may not have a lot but each state should have something. I'm sure it depends on how big the state is and everything as to how many but texas is a pretty big place so I'd bet every big town has two or more places.

Whoever told you this was incorrect. It's not required that everything be sorted, but the bins are available for those who chose to. At least in some parts of Texas.

I am *SO* glad to hear that they are available to those who choose the bins:) I hope most would take this option. The person who mentioned it must have been in one of the areas that didn't supply the bins.

There is recycling in Texas. I live here and my husband and I recycle. We also received a recycling bin in our neighborhood so we can recycle as well.

There are recycling bins distributed by the city in Houston by Best Waste. My husband and I live out in the country so don't have city trash pick up. We do have 3 recycling places to choose from though. The city trash dump has a large recycling facility and will even recycle house building materials in decent shape. There is another place that's a little far for us that takes general paper, glass and plastic and there's the place we usually go to that pays for metals by weight. They will also recycle paper, glass, plastic, bricks, you name it...

In Amarillo, the bins are behind the waste disposal center building. It is just not stressed or talked about. I tend to forget about it totally, but my daughter is big on recycling. She recycles plastic and newspaper.
