Are you surprised by the amount of religious people on here? I am.

February 6, 2007 4:11am CST
Most of my circle of family and friends aren't religious and I thought that it was getting less and less popular these days. However the large amount of religious people replying to discussions on here makes me think that I am the exception in not believing, which has surprised me. What do you think?

Strangely enough, that was one of the first things that struck me when I joined MyLot, and I beleive it was about the first thread I started a long time ago! I know you live in the UK (as I do), and I certainly Brits regularly go to Church. I rememeber asking a question about whether Americans are "more religious", and most of my American friends said "no", it is just those from the "Bible Belt", who tend to be quite vociferous, and give somewhat of a wrng impression about the majority of people in the States.

I think anyone who is here primarily for the money would have a hard time. The monetary rewards would hardly be worth the time spent. I am here for good, courteous, intelligent discussions. I am a Christian whose beliefs mean everything to me. I have known, loved and served the Lord Jesus Christ for 48 of my 70 years, and He is everything to me. I have good discussions with atheists, agnostics, pagans, Muslims and many others. I have made some good friends. The money doesn't interest me.

I am not surprised for one reason. At least in many western countries it's not considered "cool" to say you're a religious person nowadays, especially among young people. I guess that the internet provides many people the privacy and safety enough to be more straight to say what they really feel or believe on, so they open more here than in real life. Also really religious people are in general more active in defending their convictions in which refers to religion than agnostics or atheists in defending their positions, so i guess that would explain it

I'm sure that none of my friends and family pretend not to be religious but really are. But its interesting that you say people do that.

well i didnt mean to say that people lie in real life about their beliefs, and probably your friends are not religious. All i tried to say is that i think that people here are more outspoken, clearer about the topic, because this privacy and distance provides a certain security of them.

It is like feeling safe with the community people.Whatever the religion the belonging to that religion makes you more secured than an atheist. It is like a child which always takes shelter in the shade of it's mom.

i dont think that its more on feeling safe... religion is a religion, like a ritual that people do..but i think - well that is on my opinon..- when you're talking about God, its more of a relationship..so its more on really knowing you're safe..because its real..God carrying you and not you carrying some kind of wood and bringing it in your house to feel comfy..

So you think more people are becoming religious as they hope it will help them in this world, rather than trying to do things themselves?

I was until I realized that this is truly a world-wide forum so religious discussions, comparisons and even bashing is unavoidable - especially with the war going on and certain and certain groups thinking it is an anti-Islam thing. So not true. Sigh. For me, religious discussions are a nice break from all of the left-wing and right-wing political BS being slung around on personal blogs for the past few years. I hate discussing politics with certain groups.

Michelle I didn't check as to where you are from, but in USA, Canada, Australia and most Asian countries, Christianity is very much on the increase.

I'm really surprised, you would think that with the world the way it is people would have less faith not more. I am from the UK.

Also, Christianity is making a comeback in Africa. Most of Africa has been Muslim for a long time. But, recently, it's been changing in areas where it is allowed or tolerated.

I was also surprised by this, but I think that a lot of users are utilizing this forum to explore religion and spirituality, which is not a bad thing. I am not overly "religious", but some recent events in my life, and certainly what has gone on in the world since 9/11, sent me seeking some sort of spirituality. I can't explain it exactly. Maybe it's a combination of trying to find "answers" that I can accept, reasons for what has happened, and comfort of some sort. I think that most of us have a "religious" side, it's just a matter of how we express it in our daily lives. I am trying to find more meaning for myself, but I am not, nor will I ever be, a person to speak of religion daily or one to end every conversation with "God bless you" etc. Not that there is anything wrong with that, either, it's just not my way. I'm more spiritual on a personal level. I know that I'm rambling... Sorry! One last thing that may clarify what I'm saying. This past summer, my younger brother was critically ill and in intensive care for 6 weeks. He had 4 major surgeries, an overwhelming infection, and liver failure. Being a medical person with many years of experience working in ICU, I knew that he would most likely die, and was prepared for it. He pulled through and is recovering at home now, and I truly believe that it was purely the power of prayer that did it. Before this I never would have believed that, but I know that there was no way medicine and doctors alone could cure him. I honestly believe that it was more...

I actually notice a variety of discussions on this site, not just religious ones. I'm used to religious talk anyway because my family and most of my other acquaintances are religious. So, I'm always surrounded by it. I consider myself more spiritual than religious, though I do believe in fellowship and spreading the Gospel.

Yes well I do believe in my religion but I do not push it on to others, and I am happy to see that we do have so many believers of our Lord on here it makes me feel great to know that their are so many others that believe in our Lord with so many terriorists and people destroying this world.

I was looking last night and discovered that indians make up a large proportion of the people on here. I think and please correct me if i'm wrong but they are a culture very led by religous beliefs. I think in the Uk religion doesn't have as much impact on our lives as it does in other cultures.

Gee, I have not noticed much mentioned here in the lines of religion at all, on Yahoo, there were a lot of religion arguements, Darwin vs Creationism, Muslim questions etc. I think religion maybe making a come back a bit, we live in a scarey world. I think sometimes a lot of religious people seems to be very zealous and maybe they speak louder and more then other people. I don't know. But I do know a lot of very religious people, then I know others that aren't. I really can't say.

I think, God made human also a spiritual being. So whatever happen they will look for a spiritual things. Whether they finally find true God in their lives or not, there is thirst that can be fiiled with only spiritual thing.
