They said when windows XP came out that it would be the be all and end all of the COS(computer operating systems). Now there is Windows Vista setting the computer world on fire. Did you really believe that they were not going to continue to upgrade Operating Sytem software and that XP would be the last overpriced and overrated software that you would have to buy?

Vista setting the world on fire..... more of a very small smoke plume!! LOL
I know exactly what you mean, however we all know really that Microshaft are going to keep on releasing newer OS's....because they love the money they make from it.
When 98 was released it was supposed to be the ultimate OS, then we had ME(little enough said about that the better and 2000(the basis of XP) and then XP....so now it's Vista...with all it's problems....the Vista version of IE7 has it's security problems, drivers for loads of hardware... or lack of them!! Vista's incompatibility with various software.... soonest fixes can be anywhere between 3 and 9 months!! An we actually had 2 customers in today with their all new singing and dancing Vista machines... who wanted.......????
To go back to XP Pro!!!
So, Vista will be the lastoverpriced and overrated OS?? No way.... give Microshaft a year or so to fix it properly... then they'll stop support for it about 2010.... and there'll be Windows 2010??

Nope. Of course there'd be updates and new software for operating sytems. There will always be newer operating systems.
From what I've heard of Vista, though, I'd never get it. They're offering all sorts of specials for installing Vista...but I have a friend who's a beta tester for Transparent Language, and she's played with Vista a bit--she says it figures that the user is completely inept. The ADMINISTRATOR has trouble installing programs. That's messed up, and I want no part of it. Untill they come out with something truely better (or, more likely, untill it becomes obsolete) I'm gonna stick with my good ol' XP.

Of course it will not be the end. How else to maintain the monopoly and make money?
The name for the next OS after vista/longhorn is already out.

I don't think so, a company like microsoft is get much gain from their first selling operating system, from the patch I think they don't get anything (small patch), from a little big patch like service pack 1 and 2 they also get gain, but I think not too much since it allready become something like their responsibilty on supporting the main operating system.
Than what will happen if they don't release a new ooperating system ?.

i knew they were lying back then. Or "spinning the truth" anyway to get everyone on the XP bandwagon. I was just pointing out that they lied and taking a consensus n who bought that B.S.back then

I NEVER believed that. If that were true then Bill Gates should prepare for retirement. The computer has evolved into a more simple yet powerful machine. So why not make software to compliment that? The only way Windows will not produce anymore will be 2 reasons: the company has gone bankrupt OR the production of computers has stopped, permanently!

I think it is not the time to change XP in Vista. Vista is too new and how was for XP, it will be updated several times by Microsoft. I'll think about Vista not before next autumn.

I actually didn't hear that XP was going to be the last. However, as someone before me posted, they're usually already working on the next upgrade by the time that they release something.
I never tried Windows Vista yet, but I'm not surprised that it's so overpriced. I'm on Win2000 at hme, & I have XP at wotk, but the computer at work has a lot more capability than the one at home because it's a newer model.
The way I see it, when Microsoft makes something that does NOT suck, it'll be a vacuum cleaner.

I dont think we will ever be done upgrading our computers and operating systems, this is an ongoing forever deal in my eyes. There will always be something better out there. What there needs to be is a price reduction....it's too expensive, and XP is not that old. I just bought a brand new computer a little over a year ago, and I thought we were doing good, now they come out with a supposed better operating system, and we would have to completely upgrade everything to be able to use it. With the internet usage being increased daily by companies/business' and just your average joe's, it will probably be a necessity to have a fully functional up to date computer system in your home or office, its almost 80% that way to just find a job, if you dont have the internet, then you have to rely on public places to access the net to obtain employment. It's kinda getting ridiculous, but I for one will be upgrading in the next few years, and by that time....I'm sure there will be something else out there better.

I found out about 4 years ago that Microsoft will release a new Windows.
It was called Windows Longhorn.
Last week I read in the news paper that Longhorn was the name code for Vista and that this is only a platform for the next Windows that will appear in 2 years.

No I didn't believe it and I don't believe Vista will be the last either. In fact I'm sure it won't. Microsoft knew it too!
I mean it's largely a way for them to make more money by releasing a new version of Windows every couple of years.
But even aside from that, technology is develping all the time and getting better, so at some point things would need to be upgraded anyway.
I think that all through our lifetimes we are going to continue to see these sort of things.

No, I actually never even heard that XP was going to be the last. Vista neither.
BTW, XP is overpriced maybe- but overrated - I do not think so. It is a good OS which is stable and secure if used properly. And has good software support.

That it is. But when they discovered the NT technology and wanted everyone to switch from the multi OS's of previous windows generations they stated that XP would be upgradable and would receive full program support in perpetuity. So that once we upgraded to XP it would be the last OS upgrade we would need. That is what they said in PC magazine.

I think continuous upgradation of software is the key feature of software industry and we will see more upgradations of Windows versions.

There never will be a 'last' system as technology is forever developing. I don't think i'll be upgrading anytime soon. Its expensive and Windows XP meets all my current needs. I'll end up getting Vista when its considered old news and everyones moved on to better things. I've heard there's a lot of problems with it though so i'll wait until Windows has sorted it out 1st.

it's gonna be a pretty good discussion i guess. yea i din't really think xp's gonna be the last. obviously the world's gonna get advanced day by day. and how long do u think people will use xp for. i mean we need a change dont we? we don't really just stick to one think. and ofcourse this isn't the last. they will continue making new windows system and people will have to bue them. and on other hand people aren't really buying them because they like it, but technically they are buying them everybody has it they need it too. and on the other point you are absolutely right, windows vasta's overpriced and overrated and as a result it's getting pretty costly, it's still affordable but the price is just not right.
