Life-altering events in life, a blessing or a loss?

When I was 47-years-old, I lost my leg in a trucking accident. It was my left leg and was amputated 6 inches above the knee. At that time I was an every-day truck driver without any formal education--GED. After my loss, a great urge came over me to educate myself and improve my station in life. Five years after my accident, I had a Master of Science degree and worked in Transportation Managment until retiring a couple of years ago.
Has anyone else had a life-altering event in their lives that caused a complete turn-around making the event seem more like a blessing than a loss?

ozzymandus, I think that it's amazing how you turned your life around after your accident. I believe that all things in life happen for a reason, and sometimes this unfortunately means things that we would never wish upon ourselves or upon anyone else happening in order to fuel our fire to change things about ourselves. I am so glad that you have improved your life and that you see what happened to you as more of a blessing than a curse. So many people could not do that. So many people who have it good complain about their lives constantly. Huge, huge kudos to you for seeing the positive side of all things in life! ^_^

Well, for me, a lot of what is motivating me to want to change what I want to do in life, is stemming from back a few years ago when due to being Diabetic I ended up getting serious Chronic wounds on my right leg due to being Diabetic, and almost lost it. This was an Eye opener to how important Health is, and maybe it was time for me to change my path in life as what I needed to be doing. At this time, I was unable to work for a couple of yrs. until my leg got better, so I had to be on Disability and find ways to Earn Extra $$ online, etc. It was not always easy.
But my leg is now OK, and I am working as a Dispatcher for a Taxi Company, and going to start looking into other options and details working somewhere else that might have a little better pay than where I am at now. But I think this helped open my door again a little more to Computer work which is what I enjoy doing to where I know if I really set my mind to something I can accomplish it.

Wow...There arent much ppl as hardworking as u do..Education to master is not a easy matter..Most less fortunate ppl easily give up their lifestyle and let everything go along...Ppl give up when something bad happen..U showed them that ppl should work harder when something bad happened... :)

This post reminds me right away of the phrase, "every shut door makes an open door." I think what happened to you was awful in one sense, and what you did made it a blessing. kudos to you for your presence of mind and making a great decision for yourself.Another phrase i like very much is, "happiness is a brave decision." Good for you,it's quite impressive.

Welcome to myLot. It's great that you could turn an experience like that into a positive outcome. It just demonstrates that what matters most is our attitude to the things that happen in life. I've been fortunate not to have anything like that happen to me so far in my life but I hope if I did I'd be able to approach it with an attitude like yours.

well, it really depends on how you view the situation... if you are being positive (optimistic), then the life-altering events in life can become a blessing... but if you are being negative (pessimistic), then it can become a loss... i always view this life in a positive manner and so i always feel that i am blessed everyday... God is really really good to me...

Congratulations! You have such a very strong determination to attain higher education and that's not just ordinary because it's a Masteral degree and only few people are able to get a master's degree. And you were already 47 years old then. And with just one leg! I appreciate your will-power. I have been a working student but what I have done is nothing compared to you.
What I consider as my life-altering event is my baptism into Christ. I was converted on October 1, 1989 and I was given the gift of knowledge of Bible Greek and now I am an author and translator of the Word of God from Greek to English.
I have already published THE WILL New Testament (Greek to English), GENESIS & EXODUS (Greek to English), ELEMENTS of SALVATION, The Right Way, GOD, ORIGIN, TRANSFER into PERFECTION, GREEK-ENGLISH (Grammar & Vocabulary), WORDS in THE WILL New Testament, and others shown at http://www.lulu.com/arseniajoaquin

not really a year ago igot this ear muffling problem a few months later i got ear medicine it didn't work so i let it slide longer towards halloween of 2006 i was feeling weird like i was loosing my mind so i went to see a my doctor again he said an eye exam cuz my eye had pressure behind it and my right ear still muffled. later on towards december i went back to the doctor and i said to him i am going nuts my mind is messing with me and i son't want to do anything and i am always tired he said i was depressed and prescibed me some antidepressants and told me to go to mental health counceling. i took the antidepressants for 2 weeks they made me feel out of my mind so i quit taking them. i wasn't depressed. i went to the councelor and she just talked to me. it didn't make me feel better and the psychologist didn't make me better the only thing the psychologist did was give me free samples of psychotic medicine all the samples didn't work so i said f it i rather feel like crap then take the psychologists samples and feel more like crap. so i gave up so since a month ago no more pills i still feel funny in the head and i my eyes r wacked out and i have constent ringing in my ears and i sleep alot and work 2days out of the day it seems like the energy and spunk 4life was drained out of me. so i think it was a weird blessing or whatever u call it i just have to deal with it i guess

That was very inspiring ozzy! Most people, when faced with even just simple failures or disappointments think that it's the end already. They never try to see the positive side of things or try to look for ways to turn these failures into something that will help them become a better person. I am really proud of what you have gone through and i hope your story will serve as an inspiring story and example to other mylot users here who might be experiencing the same that you did.

Welcome. You are my hero. Between all complainers here, you are showing how to find blessing from lost.
