A taxi driver returned a black bag carrying 31 diamond rings to a passenger who earlier had given him a 30-cent tip on an $11 ride.
The unidentified woman, who said she was a jeweler, offered a $100 reward. Chowdhury accepted the money to cover the fares he lost while tracking her down.
I would always give 10% reward. I think it is shame on Jeweler.
How much do you think his reward should be?

Unless they were very cheap rings I think the woman was out of line. He could have just thrown them out and she would have been out a lot of money. She should have at least paid him for his time and a reward on top of it. Something to show her appreciation. This was more of an after thought in my opinion, like oh I guess I should give something. I know why she didn't want to be identified, she'd lose a lot of business if she was because I'm sure ones like me would't go to her thinking if she's that cheap in her treatment of others how will she treat me?

Personally I think we all should do a random act of kindness when the oporatunity presents it self like in the case the taxi driver without expecting a reward but if it is offered and in that case it should be at least 10% of what they could have lost.

The cabbie spent over two hours driving around trying to find the woman that had left the diamonds behind. She is a prominent jeweler in New York. That $100 didn't even cover his time that he had to take off from picking up fares in order to try and return the diamonds. He certainly did the right thing, and should be rewarded for his honesty and integrity. This woman is a selfish witch in my opinion and she should be greatful that he returned her property at all. He should have at least been rewarded with 10%. I hope she is shamed into giving this cabbie more.

I agree - I think he deserved more for his honesty if she could afford it, and I would hope that if you were carrying 31 diamond rings you (or your employer if the rings belong to them) could afford it.
I also hope this makes her reconsider her tipping strategy, because as sad as it may be I've seen a lot of people comment that for that poor a tip he should have kept the rings - which is wrong, but it does show the attitude towards poor tipping!

I think it is amazing the cab driver took the time to find the person it belonged to and give it back. The 31 cents as a tip is pitiful, he first deserved more of a tip. The lady who had the 31 diamond rings sounds irresponsible, flippant, and a little rude. Anyone who had that kind of cargo would be a little more careful with it than she was. The cabbie was a good samaritain and he deserved a reward. He should have gotten way more than 100 dollars since he was returning 31 diamond rings. He could have made more money with the rings if he had just kept them, so a higher reward it a must.

i too think that the reward was way to small, and like one of the posters said, it was an after thought. its sad. i was a dispatcher for a cab company in new jersey and i know how hard it is for the drivers to make money with it. they have to pay dispatching fees everyday, plus if you dont own your own cab, you have to pay a fee to use the owners car. one day i left something in a cab and the driver brought it back to me and i paid him for it as if i was in the cab itself. he didnt have to come back. the cabbie probably didnt expect a reward but 100.00 for lost diamonds probably worth thousands of dollars and on top of that a 30 cent tip? way to little.

I definitely would have given him much more than $100, depending on how much was the total cost of the 31 rings. Not only that, I would want to get his address and get some personal data, meet his family, then perhaps send him something he does not have in his home as an added surprise bonus for his honesty. Honest people are hard to find nowadays.

Sounds like the cabbie did what was right and the passenger proved more than once that she was a cheapskate.

i think it is a test of character whether destiny or not, it's better to have a clean conscience, without guilt. even if no reward was given, 'God will reward those truly good at heart.

He should certainly be reimbursed for his time and mileage in tracking her down to return the items. I don't know that he needed to be rewarded extravagantly for being a good person. The $100 seems like a token amount in comparison to what he returned but what would he have gotten by keeping them? Surely she would have reported them missing or stolen. If he had tried to sell or pawn any of them he very well may have ended up in jail. I'd say $100 reward and knowing he did the right thing is much better than the alternative.

Well, it is good that the taxi driver returned the diamonds, but an incident like this, when a taxi driver returned a case of diamonds worth about 120,000, the taxi driver got back 10,000 in reward, and even a small "gift" to the driver's wife, that was sent from the owner.
Now that is generous.

good to hear that still there are some good guys on the street!Well that old woman would have been sorry that she did not pay the taxi driver the right amount and she should be ashamed that insfite that fact still the taxi driver were so kind enough to return her belongings. she should have paid the taxi driver rightly thats a good reward, 100 would not pay for the attitude of a true honest taxi driver... amen!
