Its my dads 89th birthday on Sunday and I took my Mam to the card shop to buy him a card , She paid £3.99 for one and they are not even the words she wanted to say, As some of you already know by my discussions , I write poems , I buy thick card and make lovely cards for every occasion ( to send to my friends and family) I personalise them and also add the poems I write for them , I always get such lovely thank yous and I have made someone feel really special , this costs only a fraction of the shop bought cards , I really do not know why more people do not do this , My grandchuldren love to do this too xx

Greeting cards are very overpriced. I am the type of person who will go from store to store and look through the cards endlessly until I find the "perfect" one, too. You are lucky that you are gifted enough to be able to create your own cards and even write the prose yourself. Besides saving money, the cards mean more to those who receive them, and I'm sure that they say exactly what you want, rather than "almost" what you want. Did you ever think of selling them online? It might be a lucrative niche!

People always say that when you start trying to sell your crafts it becomes too much like work and a job, and you lose the enjoyment. You're probably better off doing what you do, making special cards for special people.

I sent tons of cards every year and its a way to make someone feel special but the prices of greeting cards can add up and make a dent in my budget so I print my own cards or I design my own cards through photoshop or Jasc and then I print them or I wait for the after season sale. I buy my Christmas cards after New Year's so they are discounted and whenever a card shop is closing or have their annual sale, I stock up and buy tons of cards for all seasons. That way, I can have a card for every occasion and for everyone in my list.

£3.99? Blimey pal, that is daylight robbery, was the card inscribed in gold plate? My friend I met from college she makes her own cards and she sends them to me personalized for my birthday and Christmas, I have kept every one of them because they mean a lot to me and I treasure them far more than any expensive card would cost. All the shop bought cards I have thrown away or recycled but the ones she has hand made herself I have kept now doesn't that say something?

I've started making my own .. it's not really the cost side of things .. I just don't feel bought cards are very nice these days ..
I'm not very good at making my own cards .. yet .. but I am getting better and a lot of the 'embellishments' can be got for free if you keep your eyes open ..
My postmaster was just racking up some new items in the post office .. and as he pushed each item onto the metal bar the little coloured card circle popped out of the hole the bar was going through ... I scooped up a huge pocketful .. all colours, loads of shapes and sizes .. I'm sure they will be useful ...

I cannot stand the price of greeting cards or even gift packages or boxes. I don't know why they are so expensive. It seems that the markup is probably 1000% on each. If they lowered their costs, they might even sell more.

No NO i dont buy cards i've rather spend the extra money on the present i do try and make my own cards for my friends and family, and for my kids i alway make them as its a keep sake factor, i keep all the christmas cards i receive and cut them up and make up new ones with ribbons and bows and lots of glitter...lol...and a bit of cotton wool for a snowy effect...and when my kids have a birthday party to go to i make then make their own cards to give to their friends and 9 out of 10 the following day at school the kids talk about the handmade card they received from mine and not about their presents. making your own cards gives everything a personal touch and a keep sake momento

Cards really are over priced. I like to get the $.99 Hallmark cards. Or make my own. That's always a good option.

I can not believe the price of card's!!! I have stop buying unless, I really have to. I would rather just give the person some money in an envelope. Maybe you should make card and sell them or make one for your mother, saying exactly as she wants, so she could give to your poppa, I would guess he would be double happy because it was made by his daughter, and his wife told you what to put. Happy Birthday to your dad!!!

Hello Weemam. Here in the United States we have a lot of stores called Dollar Stores. In most of these Dollars Stores you can find a large selection of all kinds of cards. Usually you get 2 for a dollar.
Do they have these kinds of stores where you are located?

good on for you. This is a wonderful hobby, and much more appreciated than the expensive store bought type. Perhaps in the future you might offer to do up a card for your mom, I am sure she would love giving some thing that has a family connection and is of high caliber

there are many cards without words which you can in a way personalise with your own message. though i do agree making your own card is 100% personalised and fun!
but with limited time, i rather buy a card on the shelf.. the only difference is that the card is hand made too! :)
warmest regards

I agree with you. Cards have really become very expensive and not that good as they used to be. I prefer e-cards or I usually make one for my friends. I dont have time so I cannot make cards for everyone but, I try to make as many as I can and I know my frinds cherish those cards more than any other card

I enjoy creative writing, but my crafting skills leave something to be desired -- having said that, my mother hand-makes her cards, and charges £1.00 to her friends for them -- they're better than most of that shop-bought rubbish anyways, so it's much more worth-while to have her make mine for me!

They are really outrageously over priced! I usally just give a present and not a card because of this. I worked out this saves me about £70 a year! I think your personalised cards sound like a lovely idea :) Good for you for refusing to be ripped off!

I agree that cards are overpriced. I try to get one that I think the person will like. But even that is hard because there is not really a great variety. I tried to get a 21st birthday card for one of my friends and all I could find in the 21st section were cards with booze and clubbing pictures and messages in, the person I was looking for is not like that so what am I meant to do?!
