Help! I can't fall asleep!

I better get some sleep! - I need help in falling asleep easily. Is it okay to take sleeping pills? What are its side effects?

How come some people fall asleep instantly once their head hits the pillow? I do envy them. I normally sleep at 3 or 4 am and wake up at around 11 or 12 noon. I have a home-based job so I can sleep and wake up whenever I want. But I want to change my sleeping pattern. Every time I wake up at noon, I feel like half the day was wasted. But what can I do? I drink milk at night and I avoid caffeine. I tried going to bed early many times but sleep just won't come. Did you ever have this problem? What did you do to overcome this?

Try sleeping earlier if possible before 12 a.m. if possible. Also, ensure that when you go to sleep to switch off the lights (this can be a major source of distraction). I have made a few good points for you (please follow them):= 1) Avoid sleeping beyond 8 am (if you snooze the way till noon you are bound to feel tired). 2) Milk might not be a good idea, milk is not easily digested and may actually trouble you. (You don't need milk to sleep). 3) Do not have any food 2 hours before you go to sleep. 4) Have a light meal (preferably a fruit, salad's etc) for dinner, a heavy dinner will always spoil your sleep. 5) If you have any mental stress which keeps you awake, try resolving that (in case professional help is required take it) 6) Avoid Sleeping pills they are addictive and do not help you. 7) Do not exercise after 6 p.m. (it will spoil your sleep for sure). 8) Try meditation, spirituality to calm your mind. 9) Listen to music (classical, soft instrumental music etc.). Music helps a great deal. 10)Try reading a big novel (about 500 pages), you can fall asleep rather easily. 11) If you have a pet dog/cat, keep it near you for a soothing feeling. 12) Before going to sleep wash your feet with warm water and pat it dry (or even have a warm shower). If these steps don't help you then dear friend i think you need a physicians help to sort out your problems. I hope my tips will help you get a nice sweet good nights sleep. Good Night (sweet dreams)!

yeah I am the same as you. I get up when I finish sleeping and that's always some 2 hours later than the day before, so I have a 15 days cycle that takes me to see dawn, the night, the day, I like it although my friends never know if I am asleep or awake. This way I live 26 hour days it means I get one extra 8 hours per week. If you want to sleep you just go under the covers and breathe your own breath, eventually you'll become sleepy. Also you should make yourself follow a pattern, after a while your body will get used to it. I'd rather go asleep when I drop and wake up when I will wake up, it's always a 26 or 27 hours day so it fits me..

First, I think if you wake up at noon, you won't feel sleepy early so try waking up one day at around 9am. I don't know what you do in the day but try to make it hectic as possible because the more you stay inside watching tv or on the pc, the less you'll feel tired. Try going for a walk or exercising. Then at, night, after you have dinner try having a camomile if you like it because I hear them say it makes you sleepy. That's my advice for you, hope it works!

Hello emilysdabomb, i had the same problem as with you before but I got over it. There are many ways to fall asleep fast once your head hits the pillow. One, drain your energy with some physical tasks during the day. It could be cleaning the room or similar menial tasks. Two, pray before you sleep. This worked for me many times. I prayed extra while Im lying on bed and after few minutes I fall asleep. You can even talk to God about your not being able to sleep. Tell Him your concerns and worries. May you have a sound sleep tonight my friend.

Hello again friend, please try to get a good sleep for 7 to 8 hours a day. It's needed by our body. No amount of wealth can compensate for an ailing body. Health is really wealth.

Search for teas that have Melatonin in them--it's a natural chemical that induces drowsiness. You should be able to find some at your local grocery store. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, you can always pop two-or-three ibuprofin before bedtime--that should make you sleepy enough to zonk out. Those are simple methods, albeit highly addicting. I'd stray from those suggestions if you're looking for a long-term solution; exercise during the day is the best idea when looking for something long-term. Do something to wear yourself out, so that sleep is more of a welcomed release rather than a strenuous task.

I have a hard time sleeping too at times. It take awhile for me to fall asleep, then I have such a hard time waking up. Here's a site that might help http://food.yahoo.com/blog/beautyeats/746/top-10-foods-for-a-good-night-s-sleep It's a list of the top 10 foods to eat before going to bed, and a recipe for "Lullaby Muffins" hopefully this might help.

I would suggest you to get up early couple of times early than your scheduled time... that is if you go to bed at 3-4am then wake up at 8 or 9am by with the help of an alarm clock or ask someone to wake you up. The less sleep that you take will help you feel sleepy a little than 3-4am... and try avoiding caffeine...

I would suggest writing a journal before you're ready to go to sleep. Write down all your worries, things to do and just random thoughts. It'll take away some of the thoughts in your head that's probably keeping you awake. I find that I think way too much when it's time for me. I usually turn on a boring show on tv and set the sleep timer.

Hmm... I also wish I'd fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.. but no.. everynight once I lie down to sleep, i like spend a good half an hour or an hour before I can actually fall into sleep. There was this point where I would lie down at 12mn, but get to sleep at around 2 or 3 or sometimes 4am already.. I think it has been gradually developed as I have been sleeping late during those times that I actually cannot sleep when I go to bed earlier. Maybe you have insomnia.. or maybe you're just used to sleeping really late.. why not try going to bed earlier then spend a good half a hour reading a book but try to relax instead of keeping yourself awake to read the book, and once you feel a bit sleepy don't insist to keep reading but go to sleep right away.. I'm not sure if it'll help but try it though..

I would suggest you that get up early one day even if you sleep at around 3 or 4 am... And dont sleep the whole day even if you feel sleepy... So I am sure that you will feel like sleeping early at night... Do this for around 4-5 days and then you will get a habbit of sleeping early and getting up early... Hope I have tried my best to satisfy your question..

The good thing about you is that you still get the 8 hours sleep your body needs each day. Adjustments may be made slowly. Everynight from now on, go to sleep two hours earlier than what you're used to, and that is 1 am. After a few months you'll find that you will be able to sleep at 1 am. After 3 months of doing just that, make another adjustment. This time, get to bed at midnight. After 3 months of finding yourself doing it fine, make another adjustment, this time it shall be time to be in bed by 11 pm. Most of us want to be in bed and be able to sleep soundly at 10 pm. This is therefore your final target after 3 more months. IT might take you a little longer than 3 months each time, but that's nothing to worry about. All you have to do, will be to adopt that length of time you find yourself as the appropriate period of adjustment. Fruits in your diet will help you, too. Grapes, papaya, apples, pineapples and guavas are good ones suitable to fit into the daily diet.

Try avoiding foods such as cheese and eating at all after 8pm. I read or do puzzles before bed to tire my eyes out. You could also try a herbal remedy- my mum swears by this. Make sure your rooms not too hot and you don't have any distractions there.

I hate when this happens to me. I think too much and thats why I cannot sleep. I try to think of pleasant thoughts when I go to bed but when you have problems and are not feeling well it is very hard to do. Everyone needs their sleep to feel better.

Some habits are hard to change but with a little persistent you can rearrange your sleeping habits. What I would suggest you do and it might be hard at first is to try setting your alarm at 10:30 in the morning and start getting up that time for a week or two. I found that by taking a natural sleep at Melatonin in a great way to start feeling sleepy. About 1/2 hour before bed take it and lay down of the sofa with the lights on low and relax. Soon it will be in your system & you will feel groggy just go to bed. It has help me alot! After a while set the alarm for 9 and then 8 a.m. and soon you'll be a early bird. Hope that works for you good luck!

Because you have fallen into a pattern, now its difficult to break, wake up early, then go to sleep early even if sleep does not come you force yourself into this pattern, but keep yourself busy till then you will be tired and sleep has to come, I sleep whenever i want it has never been a problem for me

I sometimes have this problem and what I do is do some physical work during the day hours or exercise. Take a warm shower before bed that should relax you. Pleasant dreams.

Read on until your eyes are drooping. Either you'll learn more or you'll fall asleep. Count sheeps in your head, 1,2,3... If you still can't, use three alarm clocks in your bedside table. Set it to six and jog around your village. Do this for as many times it gets to change your sleeping pattern.

I have never had that problem but maybe you are an insomniac. You have said that you drank milk and that you avoided caffeine but you didn't try tiring yourdelf so that you could fall asleep faster. You should try that because it works for me. I hope this works I know how bad it feels when you do not get your much desired sleep.

You're still getting the 6-8 hour sleep which is good. Before I used to sleep around 3am and wake up at 7am to ready for work. Those were the times that I was feeling low and thinking of many unpleasant things...my dark days. Now, I sleep at 11pm or 12mn and wakes up at 7am. I surround myself with good friends. Reading good books and watching feel good films aid me sleep with a smile.

Well my friend i advice you to buy a cd like instrumental music with background of birds and water so it can give you relaxation feelings. Then drink a lot of water dont eat as much as possible, then clean your room and get some air freshener so it might help you feel comfortable and add a little candle with scent but make sure u put it in a safety place. Then inhale exhale for 3 minutes then PRAY silently ask God to give you peace in your heart.Godbless you
