Beggars are a common scene here in the Philippines. They are everywhere from the streets, under the bridge, near bus stations,in underpass, outside the church, and you can see them in different ages. Some of them just lie or sit in the ground with hands outstretched, some sing, some knock on your car windows, some carry a baby or an old man, handicapped people, and many other. Sometimes i wonder if all the beggars are really poor or just plain lazy to go find a decent work. This is also the reason why sometimes i am hesitant to give money to them. I choose the old people or the handicapped ones.Even the kids are everywhere in the streets asking for coins.. But i would say that giving food is much better than giving money because you never know where they will spend the money you give them. What are your thoughts about this?

I have to pass them by. I don't feel great about it, but I don't have that much to give. And it's not even just that, considering that I would worry that the money would not go towards something that would really help them out. I have to agree with you that at least if you give a beggar food, you know that they will have something to eat. If you give them money, goodness knows what will happen. I would much rather give some money to a shelter for the homeless - at least then I know where my money is going, and that it will actually help out some people who need it.

I've given more than once to people who have asked for money. You could give food but what happens if the person has an allergic reaction and can't get any medical help because they have no money. But I do at times wonder what the person is really spending the money on. I would hope it would be for something good, but you just really never know.

Generally I don't give money unless and until I feel that the person is really in need of it and really can't do work to earn money. The little kids begging especially are a sad sight. There was this little kid who once actually called me a "rascal" becuase I didn't give him money! And I really couldn't believe my ears! From where do they pick up such words? And the other day while I was coming back from college I saw this old lady whom I see everyday morning who puts a really sad face and begs, was sitting and counting her money.Well it was all in coins but my eyes bulged seeing the number of coins she had! These people sure are rich!
One day when I was standing with friends,a lady came carrying a child, asking money on behalf of the child. My friend said that she wouldn't give her a penny.Because it was earned by the hardwork of her parents!I really loved the way she said, and from then on I have kind of stopped giving money to beggars, until and unless I think they realy need it!

I see you also live in the Philippines. This is definitely one of our country's predicaments and had been for generations. I do give money to beggars. But I prefer to give to those little children who is selling sampaguitas or anything. There are some beggars out there who, unfortunately, were extremely rude. Like you handed them money and they will ask for more.

Beggars.... I come from a fairly close and smallish town. The largest "city" around here (within an hour) has a population of 22,000 that is all. I used to work at a bingo hall and one winter I was taking the garbage out and noticed an older man digging through the butt cans. I saw him out there several times...
I began leaving him a few of my own full smokes, coz I felt bad that he had to dig through butt cans...
We began to chat a few times when I was finishing up my late shift at nights....
Just recently again I came across him again outside the local Zellers store (Canada's version of Walmart). I went in and bought him a toque and mittens... Him and I haven't really ever talked much, he will not ever look me in the eye and I am worried I am going to offend him but whenever I do see him I always try to give him something. Most people turn a blind eye for verious reasons, some people detest beggars and some people just can't afford to go handing moeny out. Some people live in such large cities that it would put them in debt to give a small donation to every beggar.
I try to when I can.
